Longtime Speedway Illustrated technical editor passes away

Fremont, N.H. (May 21, 2015)—All of us at Speedway Illustrated are deeply saddened by the passing of Senior Technical Editor Doug Gore.

Gore’s technical contribution to the sport of auto racing and its participants is unmatched. He applied his degrees in engineering and physics to his love for every level of stock car and open wheel racing. By doing so, Gore improved safety and speed while reducing expenses for tens of thousands of racers through his decades of editorial contribution.

As a technical writer and editor, Gore was consistently on the cutting edge of safety. He thoroughly researched crash analysis and inspected safety gear and its implementation. His efforts resulted in technical material that led to specific changes in chassis design and product improvement. Gore’s work directly improved driver safety and crash survivability for all those who race today.

At the track, Gore won races, most often with Dick Berggren driving their sprint car. He competed at the Indianapolis 500 as a crewman in Chet Fillip’s effort. However, Gore was just as enthusiastic to help a racer in any division improve his or her car’s performance. He could be found in the engine compartment or under the chassis in divisions ranging from mini stocks to modifieds and late models.

Behind the scenes, Gore was often called on by many in the industry as a consultant for a new part’s construction or implementation. He spent 20 years as a judge in Formula SAE competition. Gore was known for spending time admiring and discussing the automotive designs with the students who had produced them.

If you race, your car performs better and is safer thanks to Doug Gore’s passion for the well-being of racers.

Speedway Illustrated extends its condolences to the many friends, colleagues, and family of Doug Gore.
