Required Legacy Pro Shock SB-64 shock is no longer being made

We have recently learned that the required Lone Star Legacy Spec SB 64 Shock from Pro-Shock is no longer being made and will not longer be available once existing supplies are exhausted. There may be a few remaining at the usual retail outlets, but we are actively researching and carefully evaluating options so that no one has to buy a whole new set of shocks to remain competitive.

Chris Swenson is working with us on this issue and we believe we can find a shock with nearly identical characteristics and in the same price range as the Pro Shock.

Will keep you posted.

That is being worked on as I type, Steve. I guess I shouldn't have put up anything about this until all the facts were known, but we wanted to keep everyone in the loop as we move along with this shock deal.

Hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, but personally I wouldn't mind being able to play with valving.

Lets hope not. Then the field gets separated by the have and have nots. Next thing you know there is $2500 - $3000 in shocks on cars. Thats a proven way to lose cars.

would the AFCO 1564 be an option?

We are working with Chris and Gary Swenson on this issue. Their shock dyno will be working overtime soon!

Until all the tests and spec sheets are evaluated, we're not speculating as to what the replacement shock will be.

My understanding is that the Pro Shock SB64 (SB=small body 6=6" 4= 4/4 valving)

is the same as the AFCO 1564 (15=series 6=6" 4= 4/4 valving) One shock is 1.64 OD while the other is 1.63 OD.

Just passing on what I was told at PRO SHOCK

  • 2 weeks later...

James Huff and I spent quite a bit of time at Swenson's shop this past Monday and learned quite a bit of very useful information after putting a large number of shocks on the shock dyno.

Basically, we discovered that the AFCO 1564 is quite a bit softer in compression than the Pro shock that is being discontinued. Not only that, but in order to run the AFCO, folks would have to buy new adjusters because the body will not fit in the current adjuster. And new adjusters are not cheap.

We spent quite a bit of time dynoing a dozen, or more, of the legal Pro shocks to get a good baseline, which we now have. In the process we found one with a bent shaft and two that had just plain worn out - most likely the O-ring according to Chris.

Since the AFCO shock didn't meet our requirements, we then looked at several QA1 shocks and we believe we have found the right shock to replace the Pro shocks. We will be sharing the part number and other information in the next few days. It's a QA1-4. I think they are made for Midgets if I'm not mistaken, which I might be.... James can fill us in on all that sometime soon.

I will say this, though. Chris and Gary Swenson spent all Monday morning with us and really are on board with the Lone Star Legacy program.

monday

Opps.... yep, it was Monday. I guess I had Saturday on my mind... Isn't that one of the tests they give you to see if you're sane? You know, correctly oriented to time and place.. LOL

James, do we have a part number for that QA1 shock?

After Del went back to sleep, James and I came up with the details about the new Lone Star Legacy shock.

It's a QA1 7564, which is a 75 Series Steel chrome-plated, twin-tube shock with a 6" stroke and a #4 valving rate - same specs as the discontinued Pro Shocks. And it has the same outside dimensions as the Pro Shock, so no one has to purchase new adjusters. Unlike the Pro Shocks, however, the rod ends are included in the price of the shock.

If you go to the QA1 website you will see that the QA1 75 series shocks are listed at $104.95, but Swenson Racing Components will be selling them for $89.95 to Lone Star Legacy teams. We're not mandating that the QA1 shocks must be purchased from Swenson, but if you'll check it out, that's a pretty good deal, especially since Gary has agreed to give $5 per shock sold back to the series at the end of the season!

Chris has also graciously volunteered to serve as the official Lone Star Legacy "shock tech" man this season. We will be pulling shocks from some teams at various times during the season and taking them to Chris for some dyno time. We have several Pro Shocks that Chris has already dynoed for us and we will be swapping those with any shocks we take from teams to get dynoed. That way a team will have shocks they can use until their shocks come back from Swenson.

Finally, the Swensons have offered to dyno any Legacy Pro SB64 or QA1 7564 shock from Lone Star Legacy teams at $10 per shock, or $7 per shock if four or more are dynoed at the same time.

Sounds to me like the Lone Star Legacy series has found a good friend!

Thought about trying out the electric chair i heard they have been trying different static levels of shock treatment with just a turn of a switch with some success .they said the results of the test come fast .... said they needed short legs with heavy upper body roll center sorta like the can on the 100 foot pole deal the pay isnt that good though . what i have seems to fit right in there ,You know most racers are lazy and wont trim the fat off the roof and with that they see the need to help us out ...way out in most cases , Seeing you and james are working really hard for all those fine racers ,my thought was to help you guys out, you know pitch in alittle .Just in case there is an issue and i dont or cant get back with the results in a timely manner .i will instruct joshua on the proper way and timing of releasing the results ... btw if the results dont work out so good im MY favor . .will this shock package you two are working on work on the tps car ..
