Australian adventure: Tyler Thomas wins B main at Archerfield, heads for Lismore

ARCHERFIELD, Australia (Jan. 26, 2015)Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla., won the B main for the second straight night Sunday in the POWRi Midget World Championship event at quarter-mile Archerfield Speedway, but engine problems forced him out of the feature and he finished 18th.

We had a good car on both nights and its unfortunate we didnt run to the end, Thomas said.

Thomas fell out after completing 30 of 40 laps. He started 13th and was running 13th when he pulled off the track. Thomas also was unable to run in his heat from a mechanical problem and it put him into the B main.

The 18-year-old started fourth in the B, took the lead on the fifth lap and led comfortably to the checkered flag in the 20-lap race. Thomas had the best lap in it.

It felt great to run so well to the end, Thomas said.

Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Ind., won Sundays feature. Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif., was the third American in the field. He led early, but fell out after completing 25 laps and finished 19th.

Thomas will also race in the third and fourth rounds of the Australian schedule in the POWRi Midget World Championship this weekend, Jan. 30-31, at Lucas Oil Lismore Speedway.

Im pretty excited to have two more midget races in Australia, Thomas said. The team is going to put the Esslinger engine on the dyno on Tuesday and, hopefully, we should be able to figure out what is causing the fueling problems. I came down here with the goals of top-five finishes and maybe a win and they are within reach.

Thomas is driving a Stealth-Esslinger for owner Scott Wilson in his first international midget competition.

The Wilsons have made me feel like Im part of their family and Ive enjoyed the entire experience, Thomas said. There have been new things to eat and see and its been wonderful.
