Oklahomas Tyler Thomas makes impressive Australian debut in Midget World Championship, wins heat, B main

ARCHERFIELD, Australia (Jan. 24, 2015)Tyler Thomas ran impressively in his Australian debut Saturday, winning a heat and the B main in the POWRi Midget World Championship event at quarter-mile Archerfield Speedway.

The 18-year-old from Collinsville, Okla., was slowed in the feature by brake trouble and a packed-with-mud right rear and finished 15th, completing 17 of 25 laps.

Thomas finished second to New Zealands Leon Burgess in his opening 10-lap heat and won his second heat. He was ninth in the qualifying points before his third heat, but didnt start because of a fuel delivery issue. It forced Thomas into the 15-lap B main, where he started fourth and was shuffled back to sixth on the opening lap.

Thomas, driving car owner Scott Wilsons Esslinger-powered Stealth for the first time, rallied and made a last-lap pass to win the B main. He had the races fastest lap.

Thomas started 17th in the feature and was running 15th when he dropped out.

We had a good car all night, but not starting our third heat put us into the B main and we had to start at the back in the feature (which had 18 starters), Thomas said. We had brake problems from the start and it had rained in the days before the event and our right rear became packed with mud and put me out. It was unfortunate.

New Zealands Brad Mosen won the feature. Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Ind., finished second and Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif., was fourth. New Zealands Michael Pickens was third. Clauson, Hagen and Thomas were the only Americans in the event, which had 39 entries.

Thomas will race tonight (Sunday) in the second POWRi Midget World Championship event at Archerfield, which has a 40-lap feature. He also will enter the two POWRi Midget World Championship events at Lucas Oil Lismore Speedway on Jan. 30-31.
