Sirizzotti scores NASCAR Fiesta Modified win first time out at Houston Motorsports Park

 

Houston, TX (September 22, 2014) - After two rainouts in a row, double features for all six Houston Motorsports Park racing divisions were the order of the day at the pristine, 3/8-mile concrete/asphalt oval this past Saturday, September 20, 2014.

 

The three NASCAR-sanctioned classes – NASCAR Fiesta Modifieds, NASCAR BWFS Coke Trucks and NASCAR AMCAR muscle cars – as well as the EcoStocks, Legends and Bandoleros enjoyed perfect racing weather (for a change) as they battled for double points and double bragging rights.

 

NASCAR Fiesta Modifieds

 

Kyle Sirizzotti’s first attempt at competing in the top-tier NASCAR Fiesta Modified division at HMP was all he could have hoped for as he took the win in the “Feista Mart 40” over a closely-matched field of low-slung, fire-breathing asphalt modifieds - a class which boasts some of the top racing talent in Texas.

 

Sirizzotti, who started on the inside of row two, worked his way under youngster Ryan Luza for second just before halfway, and then cleanly scooted under race-leader Ian Webster a few laps later for the lead.

Despite intense, late-race pressure from Luza and another youngster, Clayton Green, Sirizzotti never bobbled and took the checkered flag by a car-length over Luza, Green, Brian Moczygemba and Michael Kourkoubes.

 

The 40-lapper was caution-free.

In the second NASCAR Fiesta Modified feature -“The World’s Supermarket 40” - multi-time track champion Joe Aramendia used the high side to his advantage the entire 40 laps to edge out teammate Brian Moczgemba by half a car-length for the win.

 

Unlike the first feature, however, this one had some fireworks towards the end involving Aramendia, Zach Knowles and Aramendia’s arch-rival, Michael Kourkoubes.

 

While the story differs depending on who’s telling it, Knowles was a bit quicker than the leader after a late-race caution and give Aramendia a tap or two with the chrome horn without success. But going into turn one a lap later, Knowles gave Aramendia a solid pop and they both slowed to recover.

 

It would have all worked itself out except Kourkoubes was directly behind Knowles at that point and didn’t have time to slow. Kourkoubes got into Knowles hard and Knowles spun while Aramendia and Koukourbes didn’t. Under HMP’s “Have-at-it-Boys-and-Girls” rule, the one who spins to bring out a yellow goes to the back regardless of who was “at fault.”

 

Aramendia went on to win while Kourkoubes finished third after Moczygemba got by him on the white flag lap. Knowles finished eleventh.

NASCAR BWFS Coke Trucks

 

Mason Teague and David Webster each earned narrow, hard-fought NASCAR BWFS Coke Truck victories over Charles Evans, Jr, in the twin features, but it was Evans who came out ahead once the smoke had cleared.

 

Going into the NASCAR Double-Double, Evans had a slim lead in the point standings over Webster, who had an even slimmer lead over Teague. But since Webster finished seventh in the first feature and Teague finishing third behind Evans in the second feature, Evans will pick up a few points over Webster and break more or less even with Teague with only three nights remaining in the HMP NASCAR racing season.

NASCAR AMCAR Series

 

There were only four of the newly-formed NASCAR American Muscle Car (AMCAR) Series competitors on hand, but there are more on the way according to HMP officials.

 

In both features Ed Nastasi, driving David Webster’s 2013 championship car, was able to get to the front early and maintain a couple of car lengths on Dale Sheen, driving one of the new-style Camaros, for the duration.
