Bell Completes First Asphalt 100-Lapper; Now Back to the Dirt Track Wars!

Lonnie Wheatley, NORMAN, Okla. (September 16, 2014) It was another first in the life of up-and-coming race car driver Christopher Bell, as the 19-year-old from Norman, OK, competed in his first 100-lap asphalt Late Model race over the weekend.

After getting his first taste of asphalt action the previous weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway, the reigning USAC National Midget champion and winner of 20 Sprint Car and Midget features on dirt this year drove the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51c in Saturday nights 100-lapper atop the .363-mile Hickory asphalt oval in North Carolina.

Running as a high as fifth in the latter stages of the race, Bell fought a loose race car over the final circuits and posted a tenth-place finish in his maiden voyage in the extended distance event.

The result wasnt what we wanted but I got a lot of good experience, Bell says.

After qualifying ninth, Bell began working his way forward soon after. We actually got going pretty good for a while, Bell comments.

Up to sixth on a late restart, Bell made his way up to fifth before the car became a handful. We fell way off, I was just hanging on the last 20 laps or so.

At ease behind the wheel, Bell enjoyed the learning experience.

It was a lot of fun, probably 80 out of the 100 laps I was racing hard with someone, Bell explains. There wasnt any of just riding around.

With the track getting slicker as the laps clicked off, the final rounds were a new experience for Bell.

Those last 20 laps, the track was slicker than any dirt track Ive ever been on. Bell says.

Bell will be back in the Kyle Busch Motorsports asphalt Late Model later in the year with the next outing set for Hickory Motor Speedway on October 18.

Until then, its back to the dirt track wars beginning with a heavy slate of action this week with the World of Outlaws and USAC.

Bell will pilot the Fox Brothers No. 53 for three nights of winged World of Outlaws action beginning tonight at Kokomo (IN) Speedway before moving on to the Terre Haute Action Track on Wednesday and then the opening night of Eldora Speedways Four Crown Nationals on Friday.

Wingless action awaits on Saturday for the final night of Eldoras Four Crown Nationals with Bell back in the potent Keith Kunz Motorsports Toyota No. 71 Midget and the RPM/Gormly No. 99 USAC Silver Crown car as he pulls double duty.
