Oil pressure issue

I have a 350 in my car that I've only raced twice. I noticed the first time that under a caution, the oil pressure would drop to about 20 psi, and then return to normal when racing. So I changed the oil, 20w50, and didn't think anything of it. I raced last night and while the motor is under load from racing, the oil pressure would drop from 60 to about 20 while racing down the straightaway, and then return back to 60 in the turns while off the gas. It did this every lap. Anybody have any ideas? Bearing clearances? Leaking oil pump?

I would put another gauge on it first to be sure. Then if it doesnt get any better, change oil pumps and oil pick up. Make sure you are using a circle track oil pan also. On dirt, use double kick out pan. Asphalt, single kick out. If it doesnt fix it, then look at the bearings. Oil filters will do that also.

How many quarts is your pan. If you have a high volume pump you could be pumping it dry under acceleration and then when the rpms drops it pumps less oil and allows the oil to drain back and catch up. Usally the pressure will drop suddenly and then return suddenly if this is the case. If the pressure drops slowly its probably no the problem

I unloaded the car today and it's about 60 psi. When I rev it, it goes to 80. I'm thinking that the oil filter bypass is opening under load and the oil pressure is just dumping. I'm running a Fram ph30 filter. I was told to run the Fram hp4 filter in its place. Any suggestions on different filters?

this is way more common than people think...I would bet 70 % of the cars you race against do this....almost any time I put an in car camera in a car...it does this....the only way I know to fix this is with the most expensive oil pan you can possible find.....or run an accusump...I run accusumps in almost all my cars....

The common suggestions are that the oil is pumping up to the top of the motor and not returning to the pan fast enough, or that the pickup screen is to close to the pan and sucking air.....

I have wasted tons of hours chasing this problem....and never really one single cause....

Im curious though...I mostly see this on big tracks...don't see the issue on 1/4 mile tracks....what track are you running?

I plan on checking the pan to screen clearance as soon as I have time to pull the pan. I'm racing at gator motorplex in Willis. I'm shocked that it happens there. I just don't see the motor pumping all the oil to the top in a matter of 5-6 seconds down the straightaway.

does not take but one lap to pump most of the oil up top ..it cant drain back fast enough ...most of the time you are not idle in the turns so figure in the rpm with oil pressure or volume and you will see it can drain the pan fast ..we lost 6 motors years a go .back to back .before we found out why ..the oil pump volume .not pressure was pulling all the oil to the top . the hv oil pump had the same gauge pressure as the stock pump at rpm ..melling explained to us the issue ..we have never run a h volume pump sense ...

Very true statement. I will check the pump, but I think it is a stock volume pump too. I have never used a HV pump in any of my motors.
