Milka Duno, No. 29 Toyota Camry, Bristol Preview

This Week's Toyota Camry ... Milka Duno will pilot RAB Racing with Brack Maggard chassis No. 039 under the lights in Friday night's Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Making History ... Duno's NASCAR Nationwide Series premiere at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend will mark the first time in NASCAR's history that a Hispanic female driver will compete in a NASCAR national series race in the United States.

First Timer ... Duno joins RAB Racing for her Nationwide Series' debut and first time racing at Bristol. Duno, though, is no stranger to short-track racing. In her three years of competition in the ARCA Racing Series (ARCA) she competed in multiple races at the short tracks of the series' schedule. In the seven short track races she competed in her first full ARCA season in 2013, she scored two top-10 finishes (eighth at Salem Speedway and 10th at Winchester Speedway) and never finished below 15th.

RAB at Bristol ... RAB Racing has fielded Nationwide Series entries at Bristol Motor Speedway 12 times since 2008, with drivers Kelly Admiraal, Alex Bowman, James Buescher, John Wes Townley and Kenny Wallace.

Hinkein at Bristol ... Keith Hinkein will serve as crew chief of the No. 29 Toyota Camry this weekend. Hinkein has sat atop the pit box as a Nationwide Series crew chief at Bristol Motor Speedway once in the past with Wallace.

Catch the Action ... Friday's Nationwide Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway will be televised live Friday, August 22 beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and broadcast live on the Performance Racing Network.

Milka Duno Quotes:

"I really like short-track racing and enjoyed those races in ARCA very much. But this will not only be my first time racing at Bristol, it will also be my first NASCAR Nationwide Series race, and I know that the competition at this level is fierce. I'm sure that it will be a big challenge and together with the RAB Racing crew we'll be working hard to earn a good result."

Keith Hinkein Quotes:

"I'm looking forward to this weekend with Milka and the RAB Racing team. Bristol is such a fast-paced racetrack that our intentions are to log as many laps in practice and to give her plenty track time to get used to the racetrack. I've been with some of the best drivers there are in this sport and most of them can't figure out what corner they're in sometimes when the caution comes out. I'm very much looking forward to having Milka qualify for her first ever Nationwide Series race; we just have to give her everything she needs to do it and that's what RAB Racing has done. I've had some success here in past and am looking forward to it again."

I believe she is Venezuelan. If you consider that hispanic. She actually is a capable driver, but as most of us have seen, being in a low budget team doesnt usually produce great results.

On a side note, Juan Pablo Montoya is Colombian.

Looks like NASCAR put the cart ahead of the horse on this one…like someone eluded to, in order to be the first, first you have to start.

I am sure that PR came form either the race team or Milka Duna. Nascar may habe put in out on thier site though. The Pr worked, it has us talking about it and watching. After all, isnt that their job to PR hot topics?

And, just so you know, she attempted to qualify for the race which is much better than any of us on here accomplished. So give credit where credit is due, she is swinging at it. Are you trying direct-flo?

I would like to see her run well…I like to see all the drivers run well. I had a question though. Have any Hispanic female drivers competed in a NASCAR national series race outside the United States?

Yep .. looks like slamming to me..

I'm not sure I'd call RAB "low budget". Say what you will about Danica, but Duno was pretty much run out of IndyCar for being an absolute danger on the track to both herself and her competitors; not only cause of her lack of speed, but also her lack of any situational awareness. There's a well known confrontation between her and Danica over the issue, but I figure it might be a bit more credible to some of you if she also got talked to by a future IndyCar champ. And I'm sure others have talked to her over the years as well:

Now, before people go off on me about being against female drivers, I'm probably among the few male Danica supporters out there. And personally, I think Johanna Long and Kenzie Ruston are FAR more deserving of a shot in that #29 car than Duno was. Those two are pretty good, the latter's still working her way up, but the former definitely got shafted by being stuck in a truly low budget operation.

Copied from wiki:

She began her career as a driver in Venezuela in 1996, finishing 2nd in the Venezuelan GT Championship. In 1998, Duno placed 4th in the Venezuelan Porsche Supercup Championship. In 1999, she moved to the United States and attended advanced racing schools and drove in the Barber Dodge Pro Series in 2000. Duno was the first woman in history to win a Ferrari Challenge Race in the USA and also she won her first Series Championship - The Panoz GT Series.[6]

Later in 2000, Duno made her American Le Mans Series debut, she was the first woman to finish in a class podium on this championship. She made her 24 Hours of Daytona debut the next year and her 24 Hours of Le Mans debut a year later. In 2001 and 2003, Duno also competed in the World Series by Nissan open-wheel series in Europe, she became the first woman to score points in this Championship. Also in 2001, She was crowned Vice-Champion Driver in the LMP 675 Class of the American Le Mans Series, she scored an impressive four wins in this class - including the prestigious 10 hour Petit Le Mans - becoming the first woman to score a class win in this major international sportscar competition. In 2004 She scored yet another LMP 675 class win in Petit Le Mans.[6]

Beginning in 2004, Duno competed full-time in the Rolex Grand-Am series driving a Pontiac-Riley Daytona Prototype for theHoward-Boss Motorsports team. Duno joined the SAMAX Motorsport team in 2006. For the 2007 24 Hours of Daytona, Duno teamed up with Ryan Dalziel, Darren Manning, and her regular driving partner, Patrick Carpentier; with a second place finish, Duno became the highest-finishing female in the history of the prestigious race and highest placing Venezuelan driver, eclipsing Ernesto Soto's 5th place finish in 1982.[6] In the Rolex Sports Car Series Duno scored three impressive and historical overall wins - twice at Homestead-Miami Speedway and once at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Quebec: With her first Rolex Series won at Miami she became the first woman in history to win overall a major international sportscar race in North America, Duno was also the first woman to pilot the fastest cars in the series - the Daytona Prototype. During her time competing in the Rolex Series Duno earned three overall wins, seven podium appearances, ten top five finishes and eighteen top ten finishes.

Not trying to argue over it but she deserves a little respect. She may not be cut out to drive Nascar type vehicles, but doesnt mean she cant drive.

That's funny

She catches crap, but her racing resume looks pretty good. I bet none of the local track promoters would turn her away..I would also be willing to bet that most of the local drivers, if given the chance, would like the opportunity to race against her.
