Misner Takes Great Plains Stock Car Honors; Sellard Shines in Mods!

Lonnie Wheatley, DODGE CITY, Kan. (April 19, 2014) – Perry Misner raced from deep in the field to take the $750 winner’s share in Saturday night’s 25-lap IMCA Great Plains Stock Car feature event atop the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park clay oval as a total of 99 cars filled the pit area.

While Misner took the big money in the Stock Car special event, Clay Sellard snagged his first IMCA Modified feature win, Jeff Kaup made a late move to snare IMCA Sport Modified victory laurels, Cody Davis made it two in a row in the Thunder Car ranks and Jarett Lunow stung the Hornets once again.

After struggling with a tight car in his heat race, former track champion Misner won the “B” Main and then raced from seven rows deep to take command midway through en route to the added money win.

“I really had to work for that one,” the Garden City, KS, racer commented afterward.

Indeed he did, capitalizing on a tremendous lap eight restart and then fending off strong challenges from Jason Rogers over the final rounds.

While Misner took the green flag from the lucky 13th starting position, Michael Pepper jumped into the lead from the front row outside and paced the initial handful of circuits until seventh starter Rogers emerged from a three-wide scrum for the lead.

With Rogers leading Nick Tubbs and Pepper when the caution flew after lap eight, Misner restarted eighth in the Delaware-style restart and charged all the way up to second behind Rogers within one lap.

Misner went to work on Rogers before finally surging into the lead exiting turn four on the 13th lap. Rogers persisted though, keeping the pressure on throughout with Misner weathering a caution with seven laps to go and then one final interruption with two laps to go.

With Rogers knocking on his rear bumper, Misner held on to take the checkered flag by just two car lengths with Rogers in second. Pepper assumed the show position when apparent third-place finisher Tubbs failed to pass tech, with 11th-starter Mike Nichols and Kyle Clough rounding out the top five.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Ellis, KS, racer Clay Sellard wasted little time charging from the sixth row outside into the lead of the 20-lapper en route to capturing his first Modified score at DCRP.

A former track champion in the IMCA Sport Modified ranks, Sellard needed just four laps to race from 12th to second behind early pace setter Beau Davis.

Sellard motored into the lead one lap later and led the rest of the way ahead of fifth-row starters Mike Petersilie and two-time track champion Brendon Gemmill, both of whom tried to mount a charge but began to lose ground as the closing laps clicked off.

Mike Wadel crossed the stripe fourth behind the lead trio with Kale Beavers rounding out the top five.

In the IMCA Sport Modified feature, defending track champion Jeff Kaup nailed a late restart to emerge atop a race-long battle for the point with Toby Witthuhn in the 20-lapper.

With Woodward, Oklahoma’s Kaup starting the feature outside the fourth row, Witthuhn gunned into the initial lead from the front row outside. Kaup made his way into second in short order and raced past Witthuhn for the lead on the sixth round, only to have Witthuhn battle back in front the next time around.

Witthuhn fought off Kaup until the race’s final caution with just three laps to go. Kaup hit turns one and two perfectly on the restart and raced into the lead down the backstretch, holding on the rest of the way to take the win with Witthuhn in second. Josh Appel crossed the stripe third with Clay Money and Randle McRoberts rounding out the top five.

Making up for a winless 2013 season at DCRP, Cody Davis raced from the eighth starting position for his second Thunder Car win in as many weeks to kick off the season.

The Bucklin, KS, shoe raced into third behind Matt O’Hair and Michael Penrod in the early going before taking second from Penrod on the seventh lap and then taking the lead away from O’Hair on the 10th lap in the 15-lapper.

Davis raced on to the stripe with defending track champion Dustin Walker making a late move into second. O’Hair settled for third with Jeromy Wagner and Penrod in the top five.

In the Hornets, Jarett Lunow took command when leader Kohl Ricke tangled with a lapped car on the final round and went on to his second win in a row after winning five of seven en route to last year’s title.

Ricke took the lead away from Brandon Bogner on the third round of the 12-lapper with Lunow chasing him down and pulling alongside as the white flag flew. Side-by-side into turn one on the final circuit, Ricke tagged a lapped car and opened the door for another Lunow win. Lunow went on to the checkered flag ahead of Jarred Nightengale and Bogner.

Action resumes at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday night, May 3, with the return of Late Models to the 3/8-mile clay oval as the MARS forces square off with the NCRA Late Models. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modified and Thunder Cars are also on the May 3 card.
