Biggest advantage is that unsprung weight is lower - which makes the shock's work load lower and thus you have better response to shock tuning (and I have found smaller weight adjustments make bigger differences with lower UW).

Have to agree with poorboy on this one if it's just the cross shaft that's aluminum.

Sprung weight on the cross shaft. Now if the two sections of the actual a-arm were aluminum, I'd say they were an advantage over the steel arms since half their weight would be considered unsprung weight. Any time you can cut down on unsprung weight, you gain a handling advantage.
