My Friend, Marty Little

As reported here previously, my friend Marty Little has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This was a couple of months ago and he has been keeping me posted with his progress and such. Being healthy and not having these issues in my family, I remain supportive but can't relate to some of the terms and numbers he refers to. I can however tell you its a serious illness and I have nothing more than my friendship, support and the caring of everyone who can assist me in prayer and I believe it works as evidenced by his mail today. Friends, please continue to pray for Marty as he ventures through this challenge. May God bless all of you!

All,

Good and bad day today. Didn't feel good when I woke up then when I got to the cancer center I nearly passed out. A quick thinking nurse put me in a wheelchair and put cold compresses on my neck and settled down. Seems that I'm dehydrated once again which is very frustrating. Back to slamming down Gatorade and water like a crazy man to keep myself on an even keel. Still am not able to eat much but I'm trying. Weight now down to 246.

Good news is that the bilirubin is coming down nicely (3.7 now, down from 4.9) and the doctor is so confident that this trend will continue that he's tentatively scheduled my first chemo treatment for Friday, Dec. 6. Hard to believe that this Wednesday (11/20) will mark 60 days since I was officially diagnosed with cancer. The past two months was been amazing in ways good and bad but none-the-less not anything that I'd have predicted in mid-Summer.

That's it for now. Continued thank you to everyone for your caring, love and support as we move forward to putting this whole nightmare behind us.

My best,

Marty

Marty has contributed to the forums in differnet ways, usually through King237.

Pancreatic cancer is a tough one for sure. We are praying for the Lord to give Marty a complete cure and many more years of productive life.

Spoke with Marty yesterday and that bilirubin level is now 1.9. The Dec 6 chemo treatment was delayed until Tuesday/10. He sounded positive and upbeat (as usual). He complained of a sharp pain in his side under the rib cage that he can't shake but is just concerned with. He had a Thanksgiving get together with his family and many old friends and family showed up at his daughters house. He even bragged he was able to eat a little.

Thanks to EVERYONE who reads this and continues to pray for him. The power of prayer continues to work!

I heard from his wife today on his cellphone (my heart sank when I heard her voice and knew this wouldn't be good). Apparently he got up yesterday to go and get a drink of water and felt light headed and fell down next to his chair. They had to EMS him to the hospital where he still is. He had the foresight to have her call me since he knew I'd be calling today about the first treatment he was scheduled for today. She says the first Chemo treatment will be tomorrow/11. I asked her to please keep me posted on his well being and she said she would. Please keep Marty in your prayers as you have been. I tell him about this thread and he always tells me "MUCH APPRECIATED".

Just got off the phone with Marty's wife and he is beginning the first of 2 to 3 months of chemo treatments right now. He had fallen previously due to his BP being something like 69 over 52 or something in that range. He will be in the hospital until Saturday. I sent him a US Flat Rater envelope last Friday with a F-1 guide and a Andy Griffin DVD that should keep him busy until he gets out. Janet (his wife) says he is doing much better today albeit in the hospital. I told her that we all send him our thoughts and prayers.

Sunday Dec 15 latest news: First round of Chemo completed (Marty says the name they use in the hospital is F5.) He is feeling "fair" and was released Friday/13 to go home. I told him that F5 stuff should have him feeling F1 worthy in no time! He sounded upbeat as usual and complained of no nausea, etc etc....I again reiterated to him that he is in the "Prayer Warriors Room" on LSSZ with many others and to hang tough. We talked for 22 minutes according to my cell phone which is ALOT of talk time for him. He raved about the care he received in the hospital and his four nurses couldn't have been nicer to him. Thanks go out to the Prayer Warriors and continuance of prayers always appreciated.

Spoke with Marty today. His weight is now down to 235 and he is feeling fine. Some nausea since first Chemo treatment (normal he says) and says Round 2 is scheduled for Christmas Eve 24th. I asked why that date and he said its to keep rythym on track. He didn't seem to mind. He sounded fine and wished everyone a Merry Christmas. I'll update y'all again when I have news. Keep the prayers going! God Speed to all of you that are reading and watching this thread.

Spoke with Marty last night....he is down to a weight of 224. His spirits are still good and he told me the chemo scheduled for the 24th of December was re scheduled until the 31st. He mentioned his Christmas wish was to have a 3 hour window to spend with his family when he is at his "peak" for the day on his schedule and he was able to have that wish come true. He was very upbeat about the time he spent with his family and I was happy for him. I'll continue to update this thread as I know more. Keep the prayers alive and flowing folks. They are really helping and lifting this guys spirits.

God works in ways we will never understand until we are in His presence once and for all. All we can do is keep praying and asking the Lord to do His will in each and every situation, including Marty's cancer treatment. There are many more prayer warriors praying, it's just that most don't chime in - they just quietly say a pray.

Spoke with Marty last night when he called me...second round of chemo was done Dec 31 and he said this round was different..alot more intense, nausea, etc etc but he is doing fine, just continues to be dehydrated. Next (3rd) round scheduled for Jan 16. I continue to pray for his recovery from this. God works in very mysterious ways and I pray that he will watch over Marty and take him to his kingdom another time.

Spoke with Marty this morning. Wife Janet answered and said they were at the hospital again since Thursday for a bout with dehydration. He is not able to stay hydrated for some reason and they had IV bags etc etc in him for 11 hrs. I was able to later speak with him and he seemed cheered up when I told him about the Daytona Testing. Marty has been at EVERY Daytona race since the early 60's. Many of you don't know this but his brother is David Little who is a Day 1 employee at Penske. He was the chief fabricator for the 2 team until 4 years ago when he was kicked up further in the supply chain. Please continue to pray for Martys recovery...always appreciated!

Spoke with Marty tonight. He had the third round of chemo yesterday and the next is scheduled in two weeks. The doctor said his tumor is shrinking since November and his "marks" are down....whatever that means but said it was good. Doctor is continuing on a 75% chemo dosage rather than 100% because it is doing its job. Marty's voice sounded now like it did before this rascal came about and I told him so. Usually it is strained and you can tell something isn't right. For those of you following this saga, the prayers are helping (I believe).

I believe in the power of prayer.

We all know that God answers prayers of believers, but sometimes we don't understand His purposes and why some things happen that just seem awful. Cancer is one of those awful things for sure, but I trust that the Lord knows all about it and why we have to go through things that we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy.

Good to hear that Marty is hanging tough.

Spoke with Marty last night. His 4th round of chemo was cancelled last Thursday due to something about the white cell count not being right. Scheduled now for tomorrow (Tuesday/4) if all goes well.

Continue the prayers please!

Marty called me tonight and he had his 4th round on Tuesday as scheduled. He was doing fine and sounded fine. We spoke on the phone for 47 minutes (longer than ever) and he was upbeat. We spoke about the Grand Prix of Miami we both attended in 1983 and it was in the rain and shortened yet it was a good time. Talked about his articles he wrote in NSSN and his meetings with his mentor (Chris Econoumacki). While this may seem like trivial stuff to some, it was encouraging to me to listen to him talk about his wonderful experiences through the years. God blesses us and works in mysterious ways that I never question, just enjoy them. I feel he ended the call much better than he started and that went for me too. Thank you lord for allowing Marty to continue his work on earth.
