Wright, Davis, and Garrison take feature wins Saturday night

James Robinson, Wichita Falls Sports Examiner

July 10, 2011 - David Wright, Ronnie Davis, and Cale Garrison took victories in their respective classes on a warm evening at Red River Speedway Saturday night. The checkered flags will cause some shuffling in what is becoming a close battle in the 2011 points standings.

The local class racing kicked off with the Super Stock/Thunderstock Heat with a field including Thunderstock points leader Ronnie Davis and Super Stock points leader Dale Miller.

David Dohme would have the pole, but Davis quickly moved into the lead when steering problems for Dohme would show themselves early as he wobbled a bit in the first turn. The steering trouble continued in Lap 2 when Matt Ohm slipped ahead of Dohme into second place.

Ohm would take the lead on the backstretch of Lap 4 of the eight lap race, but any gap Ohm created was drawn back in Lap 6 when the cause of Dohme's steering problem's showed itself.

Dohme's back right tire almost came off causing him to turn sideways in turn 3 of Lap 6, bringing out the caution and causing a restart.

Despite the restart, Ohm held on for the Heat victory as Davis took second and Miller was third. Ohm received first place points for Super Stock, while Davis took first place points for Thunderstock.

In the Super Stock/Thunderstock Feature race, Dohme would stay in the pits as he watched Davis increase his lead in the points standings.

Davis, Ohm, and Miller would run bunched together until Lap 9 of the 15 lap race when mechanical problems for Miller caused him to fall back. As Davis and Ohm continued to run neck and neck, Miller pulled into the infield on the backstretch of Lap 11 to leave it a two car race.

Ohm bumped and pushed Davis though the final four laps, but Davis held onto the lead to take the victory. Ohm would still take first place points for Super Stock.

A crowded field of Hornet drivers allowed two Hornet Heat races for Saturday night.

The first Hornet Heat took a bit to get started as a sneaky Keith LaFonte tried to improve his position before the official start. Once the race actually started, LaFonte still worked his way into third in the first lap as Corey New took the early lead with Lance Chapman sitting in second.

The battle would be between New and Chapman as they went into Lap 4 of the six lap race side by side. Chapman would slip into the lead in the backstretch of Lap 4 and hold on for the win with New coming in second and LaFonte third.

Dillon Brown, Cale Garrison, and Ashley Shrum would fight for the lead in the first lap of the second Hornet Heat. Ashley would get the short end of the stick on the backstretch of Lap 2 when a tangle between Brown and Garrison ended up pushing her back into fourth place behind Justin Shrum.

Brown would maintain and build a lead until a spin out by Brandon Webb caused a restart. With the pack back together Garrison and Brown traded paint again, this time leaving Garrison's bumper hanging for the final two laps.

Brown would hold the lead and take the victory while Garrison finished second.

Eleven cars were on the track for the 10 lap Hornet Feature, but in a running trend for the night the race was essentially between Garrison, New, and Chapman.

The big three were bunched at the front of the field through the first lap, but Chapman slipped into a noticeable lead in the first turn of Lap 2. Chapman moved into second and Garrison into third.

A restart after Justin Shrum spun out in the final turn of Lap 3 led to Garrison and Chapman pulling away from the field as New became a distant third.

Another restart in Lap 8 had Garrison and Chapman fighting hard for the lead. Garrison would eventually work his way into first place and take the checkered flag with Chapman bumping him the entire way. LaFonte would slip past New for third.

The most exciting finish of the night came in the Charger Heat as points leader Brooks Payne hoped to put some distance between himself and second place Cameron Liss and third place David Wright.

The race would begin with Payne, Wright, and Dan Geil fighting for the lead. Wright would slip ahead on the backstretch of Lap 2 while Payne moved ahead of Geil for second.

It would be a short night for Liss in his number 15 car. Liss lost a tire in the final turn of Lap 3 putting the 2010 Charger Champion out of the race and bringing out the caution flag.

Wright held the lead after the restart with Payne close behind and Geil a solid third. The standings would hold until the final lap when things set up for a dramatic finish.

Payne edged ahead of Wright in the backstretch of the final lap, but Wright would retake the lead when he got on the inside of the final turn. Despite being pushed to the outside in the turn, Payne caught Wright in the straightaway and nosed ahead at the last second for the win.

Geil, who finished third in the Charger Heat, would have the pole for the Charger Feature. With his 15 car out of commission, Liss was allowed to switch to his 51 car to keep a full field.

It would be a short race for Geil who almost immediately pulled into the infield as Payne took the early lead with Wright close behind. The 51 car would also prove not to be up to the same standard as Liss' normal ride as he fell back early.

The drama would otherwise be short lived for the Charger Feature. Payne and Wright battled for the lead through the first five laps before Wright pulled ahead. Once at the front of the field, Wright steadily pulled away and cruised to victory.

In a night too big for one article, Red River Speedway also played host to a 100 lap Street Stock Endurance race on Saturday. Click here for results.
