rebelracewriter Posted March 29, 2003 Report Share Posted March 29, 2003 Lone Star State Readies For ASA Invasion Pendleton, IN (March 28, 2003) – For the first time in the 36-year history of the ASA Racing Series, the state of Texas will witness America’s premier short track stock car racing series. ASA makes its debut at the state-of-the art Houston Motor Speedway and its .375-mile oval on Saturday, April 12. “Having a primetime event with ASA on Speed Channel is a tremendous opportunity,” said Graham Baker, spokesman for Houston Motor Speedway. “This track is one of the best-kept secrets in Houston. The previous owner built a fabulous track, but the general public wasn’t aware of this facility. ASA will bring us national spotlight in April.” Houston Motor Speedway was constructed in 1978, originally as a dirt track and is currently in an asphalt form. It was first known as Big H Speedway, recognized as premier dirt track, featuring regular visits by the World Of Outlaws. Daniel Baliles, initially owned the track and spent over seven million dollars on facility upgrades. In 1995, the track switched to a pavement surface and it eventually reopened during the 1998 season. Continuing improvements including a concrete retaining wall were placed around the track in the next few years. In July of 2002, current owners Graham Baker and his brother David Baker reopened the track under its current configuration. Located on the northeast side of Houston, inside Beltway 8, Houston Motor Speedway was designed after Texas Motor Speedway. Track amenities include a computerized transponder timing system and VIP suites. The April 12 ASA visit marks the 23rd different state ASA has competed in since 1973. Additionally, the series has visited three Canadian provinces. Indiana tops the charts having hosted 145 national races. Traditional Great Lakes states Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio follow in line with 63, 51 and 47 races respectively. The Texas 250 kicks off on Friday, April 11 with a three-hour optional practice session beginning at 1 p.m. On Saturday, practice resumes at 12 p.m. with qualifying scheduled for 4. The Texas 250 goes green at 9. Tickets are available through the ASA office at a cost of $25 for general admission seats. Discounts are available when purchasing in advance.
