Sims take inaugural TSRS win

Sims takes first ever TSRS win @ Houston Motor Speedway 3-22-03

By J M Hallas

Emotional Victory Lane for Jake Race 100.

Houston, Texas. It was an emotional victory lane as Austin’s, “Stormin” Steve Sims, pulled his Pauls Motor Works/Bearden Automotive/Arbor Auto Works/Als Auto Works/Colvin Automotive/Sun Tile/358 Chevy Camero in to the winners circle in the first ever race for the Texas Super Racing Series held at Houston Motor Speedway. Sims was able to avoid all obstacles and took over the lead with a few laps to go when, then leader Todd McLemore, experienced motor trouble. Sims started 11th and with some help from above missed the wrecks that happened in front of him. Sims raced with a heavy heart, due the loss of long time friend and crew member, Steve Henderson, who passed away suddenly earlier this year. It was a fitting memorial and tribute to his friend.

Sims, who has been racing since 1986, won the Super Stock Championship in 1994 at the old Longhorn Speedway, where he had 15 A-main victories. He has recently raced at Thunder Hill Raceway scoring the tracks opening night feature win in the Limited Late models, and finishing as high as 5th in points, twice, with 6 feature wins. Sims has family support from wife, Tracy, and two sons, Bruce and Trevor as well as two brothers, Rick and Greg, who have also raced. The crew consists of Paul Cook, Jeff Bearden, Curt Poulton, Winn Casper, Rick Sims, Andy and Walter Symmes and Mike Stills, as well as Steve Henderson who is still in all their hearts. Sims has many fond racing memories, but his inaugural TSRS win, dedicated to his friend “Gravy” will remain a stand out.

Writers note; While I was sadly, not in attendence for this race, but I have been friends with the Sims racing team for 5-6 years now. I'm honored to consider them a member of my extended racing family. I wish I been there to give this better coverage, as my tribute to Steve "Gravy" Henderson.
