AMALIE OIL NATIONALS PRESENTED BY ANCIRA CARS, TRUCKS AND RVs

By Bruce Mabrito

Do you want to feel the earth move under your feet without going to California?

Go to San Antonio Raceway on IH-10 east of the Alamo City this weekend and experience the world of Top Fuel, Pro Mods, and Pro Stock cars. I guarantee that you will experience something no other sport can offer.

The interactive sound, smell and "feel" that surrounds the participants and spectators. This is an entirely different experience from a Dallas Cowboys game, a Rangers baseball game, or even a Rampage ice hockey game. It's a little bit of all of those, and more.

When these International Hot Rod Association 6,000 horsepower dragsters blast off the line together, everyone within a half-mile experiences the affect of those 12,000 horses galloping down that quarter-mile pavement. That dash now takes less than five-action filled seconds in a top-flight run. It is truly incredible.

This inaugural Amalie Oil Nationals presented by Ancira Cars, Trucks and RVs was postponed from last weekend when a cold blast of a late San Antonio "norther" moved in and coated everything with a fine cool mist, making drag racing impossible. This weekend appears to be great south Texas spring weather, perfect for a motorsports event.

San Antonio Raceway will open its gates at 8 a.m. on March 8 and 9, 2003. SAR is located east of the Alamo City about 12 miles. Take the Santa Clara Rd. Exit (Exit 597) and cross over IH-10 to the track. You will be able to hear the action from the Interstate. Saturday night is the IHRA "Night of Fire" which features the final round of pro qualifying under the lights, Ken Nelson's wheelstanding "Cool Bus," the "Queen of Diamonds" jet dragster, and the 200 mph Jet Kenworth of Bob Motz, plus a big fireworks display.

Pro qualifying starts at 1 p.m. and continues at 7 p.m. Saturday at SAR. Sportsman qualifying is at 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the Sportsman Eliminations start at 8:30 a.m. and the Pro Eliminations begin at noon.
