NickHolt
Under the "Chase" points system Gordon is only leading Johnson by 53 points. Under the "Classic" system, he'd be 483 points ahead of Johnson... tqj3
Yeah. It's kind of like trying to stop the best golfer in the world by making the courses more difficult. Cream, as they say, rises to the top. (As I recall, Gordon would have won in the first "Chase" year under the old system, so they've managed to take at least one away from him/ Of course, there are still only three drivers in NASCAR history who have won more than three... Definitive
With today's competition,it might be a stretch to say it,but Gordon has a realistic shot at 7 titles along with beating out the silver fox for second place in the wins column. tqj3
T-D- You have a point, particularly if he manages to get that fifth win this year; he has a lot of competitive years left. Your comment about the competition now reminds me of what Richard Petty said nine or ten years ago when asked if he thought Dale Earnhardt would beat his record of Cup titles. Petty said he thought Earnhardt was already ahead of him, because it was harder to win seven titles than it was when Petty was racing. There were some very good drivers (I'm not sure David Pearson wasn't the best of the bunch), but there weren't ten or 15 good drivers, all in good equipment.
