Clash of the Titans, Outlaw Street Car Nationals @ San Antonio Raceway 6/2/07

By J M Hallas

Marion, Tx.(June 2nd, 2007) After a week delay because of rain, the Clash of the Titans, Outlaw Street Car Nationals finally got underway at San Antonio Raceway. The CotT features some of the baddest of the bad in street car racing ranging from the blown, turbo-charged, nitrous injected Pro Outlaw and Outlaw 10.5 class, to door bangers of Cheap Street and everything or combination you imagine in between.

This marks my third time covering this event put on by Freddy Cruz and sponsors O'Rielly's Auto Parts and Firehouse Pub and Grill. It never ceases to amaze me the number of different combinations and technical wizardry that some of these machine roll to the starting line with.

Drag racing has evolved dramatically since the early 70's when I had my first introduction into the sport. Gone are the days of the ‘run what ya brung’ stock, street cars, giving way to the high tech, high powered, motorized magic in the Clash cars now days. Blown, turbo-charged, computerized, 2-3-4 stages of nitrous injection are the norm of the day, making these machines the bad jammers they are today.

Head hooked up for Pro Outlaw win

Rusty Head used consistency all day long to make his way through the Pro Outlaw field and take his first class win. Head was top qualifier with runs of 7.249 and 7.293, then put away Aubie Barron in the first round with another 7.20 pass clicking the lights with 7.223 @ 191.25 to Barron’s 7.555 @ 165.38

Head squared off with Jeffery Cummings, who qualified second. Cummings beat Roy Hendon in the round 1 to get into the finals. Head saved his best for last as turned a 7.051 @ 195.74 to beat Cummings 7.359 @ 184.35

Head, Pontiac Grand Am,

Naiser knows way to Outlaw 10.5 winners circle

Jeff Naiser didn’t let two disappointing qualifying passes discourage him as he was able to beat top qualifier and NRC teammate, Todd Moyer in the finals. Naiser’s two passes of 12.040 and 9.958 dwarfed in comparison to Moyer’s 7.108, but gave the team enough information to be able to step up his performance in eliminations.

Naiser drove around Chris Shortridge in round 1 with a 7.385, then defeated defending class champ Kevin Hargett in the semi’s with an even better 7.175. Moyer made it to the finals besting Johnny Solis in round 1 and getting a bye run in the semi’s when Jesse Brantley pulled his car from competition. Naiser again stepped up in the finals with a 7.051 @ 200.89 to Moyer’s 7.253 @ 205.00.

Eliminations were marred by a scary crash in the first round. The two brothers, Kris and Jesse Brantley, were paired off in an odd twist of fate and were on a great side by side pass. Kris got sideways as he went through the lights at 172mph. As he corrected the car got completely sideways and started to roll, hitting the wall before sliding to stop on his roof. Fortunately all the safety equipment did it’s job and Kris was able to walk away without injury. Jesse would withdraw his car for the rest of the night.

Curry conquers Super Street class

Justin Curry swept through the field as he set fast time, then got the better of defending 10.5 champion Kyle Heutell in the finals. Curry’s 7.739 @ 181.52 was quickest to Heutell’s 7.862 in qualifying setting up the battle between number one and two in the finals.

As the two top dogs rolled into the staging lights, Curry’s car jumped but not enough to break beam. Heutell, instinctively, launched when Curry moved and turned on the red light giving the victory to Curry who completed his run with a 7.813 @ 181.27. In round 1 Curry used a 7.661 to drive around Matt Seisel who put a .008 light on the younster, then got a competition single when last race winner Richard Lelsz broke on the line in the semi’s. Heutell drove past Kanjo Kelley in round 1 and got the hole shot win over Travis Franklin in the semi’s.

Curry, Chevy Camaro,

Wheat whips ‘em in Pro Street

Cory Wheat got the hole shot on fast qualifier, Ray Jaso in the final round of Pro Street posting a 4.673 @ 157.01 on the 1/8 mile pass. Jaso drifted towards to wall and slowed to a disappointing 5.947 @ 126.51

Wheat bested Lewayne Brown in round 1 with a 4.737, then beat Tim Rivette in the semi’s with a 4.702 to Rivette’s 4.880. Jaso was ripe for the taking in round as he smoked the tires, but Chris Trew broke on the launch. Jaso then got bye run in the semi’s but drove it through with 5.012 @ 149.95

Wheat, Chevy Camaro,

Flores fastest in True 10.5 field

Johnny Flores showed he was fastest from the jump as he laid down quick time in first round qualifying with a 8.061 @ 168.86. Flores then flew through the field to meet with Martin Keefer in the finals. In the finals, Flores laid down a 8.021 @ 170.45 while Keefer drifted towards the center line and only ran a 9.049 @ 123.39.

In round 1 Flores used a 8.113 to beat Joel Cuda, then a 8.109 to take out wheelstang king, Jason Traugott in round 2. Flores got a bye in the semi’s taking it easy on the equipment with a lackluster, 20.855 @ 57.61. Keefer nipped Angel Padilla in round 1 with a 8.175 to Padilla’s 8.193, then took out Chip Raderchak in round 2 with a 8.079. The semi’s saw Keefer have to drive around Randy David with a 8.077.

Flores, Chevy Nova,

Frazier first in Cheap Street

Ben Frazier, who was runner-up the last race in Noble Okla, put a hole shot on Rudy Mungia, then ran out a 9.337 @ 124.09 to take the win over Mugia who crossed the center line barely missing the timing cones.

Frazier got to the finals getting the win in the first round after Jay Knott lit the red, but still ran a nice 9.046 @ 141.88. Mungia got a bye run when fast qualifier, Phil Pierce was unable to answer the call.

Special thanks to Freddy and all the Clash staff for thier help with names, info. Judy Zampese, who always treats me like one of the SAR family and gave me a nice cool, suite to set up in. Last but not least, ol' Tommy for letting me hang out on the starting line for a while......I'm gonna hit that button just once in my lifetime!!

That pic you posted of the Jungle Jim funny car is a recent restoration of an original Jungle car.

It is owned by Henry Gutierres here in Schertz.

The paint was applied by Ken Lund, better known as Rainbowman. I believe the chassis was restored by Greg Hubbell, and a lot of input by Bobby Rex and J.E. Kristek and others.

Great looking car, and, as we speak, another car that belongs to Gutierrez is being restored. This one is a San Antonio car, the "Mexican Revolution" funny car from the early 70's that was driven by Johnny Valadez and tuned by Bobby Rex.

If this is the car I think it is, it started life as the "Brand X" car owned by San Antonio native Cecil Lankford.

You oldtimers know this name.

The car was a Chevy powered Camaro when first run by Valadez, but, after a fire, Don Hardy rebuilt it, and it was rebodied a Vega with a Hemi. I do not know which version the restoration will be.

so unlike the post txenergyman made on 4/15 and 4/16 about bringing nhra to the area, are thoughts now that the track is ok?and its good you let us all know that Todd has a nice track.most in these parts have known that for YEARS now.frank t

Todd does have a nice facility, does not change my thoughts of NHRA in this area at all.

Tommy and I have talked about this before on here, but it brings up a good point. If San Antonio has a great drag strip, would San Antonians support two tracks. I would love to have an NHRA sanctioned track and had people not been greedy, we would have had Texas Motorplex here.

Pasted is the pasted I know, but what are peoples thoughts on NHRA in S.A.? Could Todd dual sanction SAR? Would he if he could?
