San Antonio Speedway’s Championship Points Night this Saturday

San Antonio, TX (September 13, 2006) – Champions in all four San Antonio Speedway stock car racing divisions will be crowned this Saturday, September 16, 2006, the final night of the regular NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series season. Billed as the “Dodge Night at the Races,” the racing program will feature main events in all four divisions along with qualifying time trials for the NASCAR Late Models and heat races for the other three divisions – the Grand Stocks, the Road Runners and the SAS Sportsman.

In the NASCAR Late Model division, Joe Aramendia of San Antonio has built a commanding lead over the defending NASCAR LM champion Robert Barker of Boerne. Aramendia has amassed 732 points while Barker has earned 678 points - a 54 point lead.

Since 50 points are awarded to the first place finisher and since no points are earned from qualifying, Aramendia doesn’t even have to show up at the track to be declared the 2006 winner of the coveted NASCAR Late Model crown.

The NASCAR Late Models are the premier class competing on a regular basis at the half-mile, paved, high-banked oval and will be competing in a 40-lap feature event this Saturday. Aramendia is expected to participate and will be gunning for his third SAS LM feature win in a row.

Brian Moczygemba of San Antonio – Aramendia’s teammate – is third in the standings (638 points), while Jourdanton residents Donny Horelka and Donald Pogue are fourth and fifth respectively.

The Grand Stock division has a similar scenario as Jody Wayne Stuart doesn’t need to make an appearance to be crowned champion. The San Antonio native has had the car to beat all season and has a huge 152-point lead (567 to 415) over Missy Jones, also of San Antonio. Bobby Evans of Cuero (335), Bryon Reed of Kyle (282) and Steve Dalrymple of San Antonio (205) round out the top five in the standings.

In the SAS Sportsman division things are much tighter with Mark Mathias of San Antonio holding a solid, but certainly not insurmountable, 31-point edge over Keith Garrett of New Braunfels (697 for Mathias to 666 for Garrett).

The Sportsman division is known for its close competition with any number of teams capable of winning on any given night.

Tater Mason of San Antonio is third in the standings (644), followed by Eric Knudtson of Boerne (630) and Jamie Evans of Cuero (590).

However, the closest championship race is in the Road Runner division. J.R. Eichelberger, III, holds a very slim 9-point advantage over hard-charging Paul Lipp, 642 to 633. Lipp has been on a roll lately, winning last week’s feature while Eichelberger finished fourth. Depending on the heat race results, Lipp would have to finish five positions in front of Eichelberger to clinch the championship.

Road Runner drivers Richard Curtis of Devine (415), Leland Frautschi of Von Ormy (407) and Mona Turner of San Antonio (300) are the drivers rounding out the top five in the Roar Runner points standings.

The San Antonio Speedway grandstands will open for the “Dodge Night at the Races” championship night at 5:00 p.m. with the NASCAR Late Models taking time trials at 6:15 p.m. and heat races taking the green flag at 7:00 p.m.

Admission is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for Seniors and Military with proper ID, $3.00 for children ages 7-12. Children six and under are admitted free.

San Antonio Speedway is located at 14901 State Highway 16 South, San Antonio, TX 78264, 3.5 miles outside Loop 410 (towards Poteet), not far from the new Toyota production facility.
