Austin's NASCAR Driver Hellmund and Crew On the Way to Phoenix International Raceway

Austin, Texas -- Austin's only NASCAR driver, C. T. (Tavo) Hellmund, and the Suzuki Motorcycles and ATV/Pontiac Grand Prix crew head to Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona for this weekend's Bosch Spark Plug 150, the first round of the NASCAR Grand National Division Winston West Series, despite not having a chance to test.

"We had a lot of work to do because of the rule changes that came late due to NASCAR's combining the Winston West series with the Busch North series into the new Grand National Division," Hellmund said this week. "With only one one-hour practice session on a track I've never seen before, we just hope we've hit the right setup. Of course, we could be off for PIR, but that's racing."

The Winston West series began in 1954 and is the West's oldest stock car series. It celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2003 as Winston West and the Busch North series join under a common set of rules.

Although he won in the Winston West series his first time out and finished third at Las Vegas last year in his second Winston West start, Hellmund still qualifies to run for "rookie of the year" honors. He's looking forward to challenging for that honor as well as fighting for the overall championship in 2003.

The race is set for Sunday, February 2, and will be televised nationally on a tape-delayed basis on Speed Channel.
