Ken Old a popular IMCA Modified winner at Texas Thunder Speedway

Ken Old and PJ Egbert waged one of those battles that the IMCA Modifieds are famous for Saturday night at Texas Thunder Speedway in Killeen, Texas, with Old taking the win after Egbert pulled into the pits with five laps to go.

Old survived a couple of fierce mid-race charges by Egbert as the two took the green after a pair of lap-10 restarts.

On the first of the two restarts Egbert used the high side after a great jump and cleanly passed Old as the twosome exited turn two. But a caution flag few before the lap was complete, so it was all for naught.

On the next restart the 2008 IMCA Modified National Champion tried the same move, but did not get such a great jump. The pair entered turn one side-by-side with Egbert very high and Old following the same mid-track line he had been running before the caution.

“I had a good run on the outside on the restart,” Egbert said after the race. “But we did make some contact in the turn and we had to slow a bit. I didn’t see what happened behind us, but we did make some contact.”

What happened behind them was a six-car pile-up as the hard-charging pack backed off to avoid Old and Egbert.

With still 10 laps to go, both Old and Egbert were OK to go with Jason Hoffman, who had survived the melee, and Hardy Henderson now lined up behind the leaders.

This time Old got away cleanly and won the drag race to turn one and the duo raced nose-to-tail for the next four laps. But suddenly, with five to go, Egbert slowed dramatically in turn 3-4 and scooted into the pits, done for the night.

“It jumped out of gear,” a subdued Egbert explained later. “I must have broken something when I hit one of those ruts.”

With Egbert gone and with a big lead over Hoffman, attention turned to the battle for second between Hoffman and Henderson, who had not only had survived the “big one,” but seemed to be getting faster as the track matured.

Henderson made the pass with three to go and held on to take the checked almost a quarter-lap behind Old. Hoffman, Mike McCarthy and David Goode rounded out the top five.

The entertaining IMCA Stocks Cars put on a great show with 17 cars taking the green.

PJ Egbert, doing double duty, and David Dunn lined up in front with Tim Carman, Jr, and Joey Craig in row two.

Egbert got out first but was followed closely by Craig, Eric Jones and Jason Batt with this quartet running as a pack for several laps.

After a caution for debris, Batt jumped down to the low side of Egbert on the restart, but the experienced Egbert was able to get some bite coming off turn two to fend off the determined Batt.

But Batt wasn’t discouraged by any means. For the last eight laps Batt was all over the leader, but never could get enough traction coming off the turns to make a pass stick.

The last two laps had the near-capacity crowd on their feet, but Egbert held on and took the checkered.

Batt, Anthony Otken, Mart Wampler and Jessie James Cox, Jr. finished in that order behind the winner.

David Dunn and Tim Carman, Jr. won their eight-lap heat races.

Robert Garcia and Mike McDougal sat on the front row of the IMCA SportMod feature with Randy Doyle and Brandon Cotton in row two and eventual winner Mitch Tierney and Tim Foster in row three.

McDougal was out first followed by the thundering herd, but McDougal’s engine didn’t sound right as he sputtered a bit down the front straight. Nevertheless, he had all the power the track could handle at that point and he put a little distance on Garcia, who was running in second, with each lap.

With five to go McDougal had almost half a lap lead over Garcia and Cotton, who were enjoying their friendly battle for second. Suddenly, almost out of nowhere, Tierney blasted by both Garcia and Cotton to grab second, but with a lot of real estate between him and the still-sputtering leader.

With just a couple of laps remaining McDougal’s engine finally succumbed and the almost-sure-winner pulled into the pits. That left Mitch Tierney to take the checkered followed by Garcia, Cotton, Joe O’Bryan and Tim Foster. McDougal finished up in sixth.

Twenty Street Stocks lined up for their 20-lap feature which was won by pole-sitter Eric Jones. Jason Bernal, Clint Williams, Paul Kohl and Bobby Norton rounded out the top five.

In the Dwarf Car feature, Mike Tedford had the car to beat until he pulled into the infield spewing steam from his motorcycle engine. That left Billy White with the lead with Buck McFarlin hot on his heels.

With two to go, McFarlin scooted to the inside and completed the pass for the lead. White tried several times to return the favor, but came up about a car-length short at the checkered flag.

Tony Williams, Tom Tomlin and Donnie Hunt rounded out the top five.

Keith White wins Heart O’ Texas Speedway Modified Jack Bagby Memorial

Keith White used a daring mid-race pass of early leader Benji Kirkpatrick to claim the Jack Bagby Memorial for the IMCA Modifieds in the season opening event at Heart O’ Texas Speedway Friday night. White made the pass for the lead when Kirkpatrick bobbled in turn four and squeezed by while sustaining right side body damage when the two cars made contact. White then pulled away for the win followed by Pat McGuire and Justin Radcliff.

Other feature winners include T.J. Green in the SportMods, Charles Cosper in Hobby Stocks, Jason Gauntt in Street Stocks, Melvin Kemp Jr. in Pure Stocks, Charles Goodnight in Cruisers, Alex Norris in Junior Mini Stocks, Mike Kelly in Twisters and Jeb Sessums in Mini Sprints.

The 2009 race season continues next Friday with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Cruisers, Junior Mini Stocks, Twisters and the Wing Modifieds.

Chris Bragg wins “Fast Shafts All Star Invitational Qualifier” at Boyd Raceway

The Sunoco Season Opener for Boyd Raceway featured the first of five Fast Shaft All Star Invitational Qualifier races to be held at the track this season.

Thirty-four IMCA Modifieds were on hand to take their shot at qualifying for the ballot fans will use to vote in the field of drivers that will compete in this year’s race at the IMCA Super Nationals.

Lap one of the “Quest for the Best” saw the field of Modifieds screaming down the backstretch FIVE wide as they headed into Turn 3! As they neared the turn, the race turned into a full contact modified brawl for space that spun Rick McDaniel sideways and planted him squarely in front of the thundering horde, pushing him broadside clear into the middle of Turn 3! This melee put an end to the quest for four drivers, Randy Martin, Charlie Harmon, Chris Simmel and Monte Bolton.

Bragg survived the incident along with front starters Darryl Campbell, Gabe Tucker and Varian Sisson. The restart has Gabe Tucker starting on the pole with Campbell on his outside. Bragg restarts second row inside with Sisson on his right. Gabe gets the lead going into Turn 1 and puts Bragg behind him down the backstretch. Tucker stumbles just enough going into Turn four to give Bragg the chance he needs to get by him on the bottom and he takes the lead down the front stretch.

Bragg and Tucker break away from the field along with Jeff Emerson who runs in third. That leaves McDaniel, (yes, he survived the broadside slide!), Campbell, Chris Elliott, Greg Kruger and Michael Moore in a fierce battle for fourth. At the crossed flags, McDaniel clears the field and sits solidly in fourth as Elliott and Sisson do battle for fifth. Emerson, who has worked his way up to Tucker, is able to get under Tucker and take second. Bragg is starting to lap the field with a straightaway lead over Emerson as the laps start to wind down.

Bragg wins easily in the Cliff’s Goodyear, Braka Operating, Farris Racing Engines, RMR Ranch, Bilstein Shocks sponsored Allen Autosports IMCA Modified! Emerson, Tucker, McDaniel, Elliott, Sisson, Moore, Campbell, William Gould and Dillon Smith round out the top ten.

“Spring Kick-Off” kicks off 2009 race season at Kennedale Speedway Park

Five IMCA divisions see their first action of the new race season at Kennedale Speedway Park in this weekend’s Spring Kick-Off special.

The second annual event is Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, with features both nights for IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, Southern SportMods and GM Performance Crate Models.


All applicable IMCA points will be awarded for each show.

The Modified features pay $600 to win. Top prize for the Stocks, SportMods and Crate Models will be $500 and the Hobbies race for $300 to win.

Gates open at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6 for registration and practice. On Saturday, gates open at 4 pm, the draw closes at 6:30 pm and racing starts at 7 pm.

On Sunday the pit gates open at 11am, the draw closes at 1:00 pm and racing gets underway at 2 pm.

Pit passes are $25 and there is no charge for grand stand admission on Friday. Grandstand admission Saturday and Sunday is $12 for adults, $5 for children 6-11 and free for kids five and under.

Mufflers are required.

Boyd Raceway “Sunoco Season Opener” featuring IMCA Modifieds set for March 6

Boyd Raceway’s “Sunoco Season Opener” will fire up on Friday, March 6, 2009. Headlining the event will be the first of five, yes five $1,000 to win Fast Shaft All Star Invitational Qualifying races for the IMCA Modifieds that Boyd will host this year!

Two drivers from each region will be chosen to compete in the All Star Invitational at the IMCA Super Nationals. Those two will only be chosen from the list of drivers that have won a Fast Shaft All Star Invitational Qualifying Race.

And did you get that? You will get five chances to do that at Boyd Raceway this season! Two drivers from the IMCA ButlerBuilt South Central Region are guaranteed a starting spot in that race! Will you be one of them? Boyd is the only track in the area to provide drivers the chance to qualify in five events throughout the year.

In addition, there will be no entry fee for this race! Teams will be required to register their cars, but that registration will be good for all five races as well as regular race nights.

Boyd is one of the few tracks in the area that uses transponders in an effort to provide the most accurate method available for scoring. Competitors will be required to either purchase or rent one in order to race.

The $1000 purse was made possible by sponsor participation and will only affect the payout for the winner of that race. Second place on down will be the regular weekly payout.

Track Promoter and IMCA ButlerBuilt South Central Region Director, Davey Plato, has reconfigured Boyd Raceway to a dirt track engineers specifications and it is expected to be even better than it was! Boyd already has the reputation of providing some of the best multi-groove racing in the area. The changes are designed to transfer the energy from the car to the track in such a way as to help prevent surface damage in the corners, allowing for a smoother entry and exit from the turns. Twenty some odd truck loads of fresh black clay have been added to the track in preparation for the 2009 racing season along with the addition of more track preparation equipment.

The Platos are working hard to make improvements to Boyd Raceway that will take it to the next level in 2009! Look for more info on special events as it becomes available!

Keith White wraps up “Ice Breaker” weekend at Abilene Speedway with third win

The final night of Abilene Speedway’s Ice Breaker special saw Keith White collect his third win of the weekend, while Vince Ogle won for the second time and Billy Wade and Jeff Kinnaird both collected their first checkers.

The opening night IMCA Modified winner, White had his work cut out in duplicating Saturday’s Southern SportMod triumph as he had to chase down early leader and defending track champion Josh McGaha.

White stayed glued to McGaha’s bumper throughout several restarts, then in a bold move on a tricky track, jumped to the high side taking the lead on lap 12. From there White put it on cruise control as he inched away from McGaha on his way to the checkers.

Ogle, the Saturday IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner, topped Sunday’s Modified final.

A two-time track champion at Abilene in the division, Ogle led from start to finish after passing pole starter Chris Elliott on the opening circuit. The front pair pulled away from the rest of the field, with Ogle stretching his advantage over the last two circuits.

Wade got around early Stock Car leader Tony Ritterbush after a restart, held off Ritterbush after another caution and built his lead on the way to the finish.

Eric Jones took one last shot at Wade and Ritterbush on the final lap but came up short and settled for third.

After following Allen Montgomery across the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock stripe both Friday and Saturday, Kinnaird took it upon himself to spoil Montgomery’s bid for the weekend sweep.

Kinnaird used track position to get out front early and build a good lead, while Montgomery was forced to make his way through the front of the pack. Montgomery used lapped traffic to close in at one point, but Kinnaird again ran away once clear and grabbed the win.

Peebles, Bolton, White, Ogle, Montgomery score in Saturday’s racing at the “Ice Breaker”

305 Sprint Cars

The 305 Sprint Cars were a mix of the West Texas Sprint Series (WTSS) and Sprint Series of Texas (SST). A good field of 17 winged warriors added to the total car count along with excitement for the fans who were huddled together as temperatures began to dip below the freezing mark.

Lubbock’s Preston Peebles wasted little time getting to the front of the 305 Sprint Car main event. Peebles grabbed the lead from Josh Hawkins on lap 2 and proceeded to put the rest of the field in his wake, going unchallenged to the checkers in a race cut to 15 laps after a slew of of early cautions.

At the drop of the green, Hawkins was first into turn 1 for the early lead followed by Peebles, Gary Floyd and Brandon Howle. Lap one saw lots of action starting when Dennis Smith got into the back stretch wall. On the restart, the middle of the pack stacked up leaving Marty Stanford stopped in turn two. On the next try Howle and Kolt Walker tangled collecting Tim Ridgeway. The third attempt had Walker and Brian Holland get hooked together in turn one for another yellow.

Finally under green, Peebles jumped up to the high side and sailed past Hawkins for the lead on lap two. The top four of Peebles, Hawkins, Floyd and Curt Barnett separated themselves out leaving Jerry Graves, Leighton Crouch and Josh Baughman battling for fifth. Peebles was quickly into traffic on lap six nearly getting clipped on the front straight.

In traffic Floyd was able to reel in Hawkins near the halfway point, with Peebles holding nearly a half track lead and with Barnett and Crouch rounding out the top five. Floyd used lapped cars to work his way around Hawkins for second on lap 12, but Peebles was nowhere in sight. Peebles cruised on to the victory in the Allstar Conversions, Allstar Automotive & Tire, Dick Sweat ASI Race Engines, Maxim Chassis.

Racing in memory of his son Justin, Lubbock’s Monte Bolton led all 20 laps of the IMCA Modified A-main. Bolton’s flag to flag run wasn’t easy as veteran Bob Sikes kept the pressure on throughout the race. Sikes tried high, low and on the bumper of Bolton but to no avail as Bolton held steady as a rock for the win.

When green waved on the 20-lap event, Bolton quickly jumped out front with Sikes second and Steve Hayes moving up to third. In the pack it was three wide in the scramble for seventh before things sorted out. Sikes took his first look for the lead on lap 2 trying the bottom side. By lap two the top three has eased away from David Davis, Brian Flowers and Chris Dawson battling for fourth, while Robbie Edwards and Josh McGaha were side-by-side for seventh.

Davis and Flowers were wheel-to-wheel for fourth on lap six, while Edwards was still alongside McGaha. Dawson saw his top five run end on lap eight when he slowed and was unable to exit the track.

Once back under green, Bolton, Sikes and Hayes stayed nose to tail, with McGaha and Flowers side by side for fifth and last night’s winner, Keith White moving up to eighth.

Sikes was continuing to look for a way around Bolton, but at the same time trying to fend off Hayes. Edwards picked off another spot getting by Flowers for sixth. At the crossed flags it was Bolton, Sikes, Hayes, Davis and McGaha in the top five spots. McGaha lost fifth to Edwards on lap 10, who then began to look under Davis on lap 11. Flowers and McGaha made contact fighting for the spot that caused Flowers to spin with a flat, collecting Jeff Emerson on lap 13.

On the restart, Edwards continued his charge getting by Davis for fourth and looking under Hayes. Sikes took a peek inside Bolton on lap 15 while Dillon Smith got back by White. Edwards got by Hayes for third on lap 16 while McGaha took fifth from Davis. Sikes got the bumper of Bolton on lap 17 as Edwards now put the heat on for second.

Edward’s run to the front ended in a shower of sparks when he pounded the back stretch wall trying the high side of Sikes.

Once back to green McGaha got around Hayes for third, while Bolton got a little breathing room on Sikes. On the final lap Bolton was able to finally shake off Sikes running on to the checkers in the Braka Operating , Sidebiter Chassis powered with a Cottle Race Engine.

“This one is for Justin,” said Bolton as he donned his son’s ski cap in Victory Lane. “To get the win for him is always special. After every race if we didn’t win he’d ask me what the problem was. ‘Can you fix it? Can you win?’ So any time we win I know he’s smiling at us with his arm raised up in the air. That was his sign for a win. Every time we win something, it’s very special. Our whole race deal is a family thing. We just try to have a good time and enjoy ourselves.”

“My starting position was one key. If you start up front it’s hard for them to pass. On the second race day, the track usually gets slick all over. The Sprint Cars all pretty much ran one groove around the bottom so it rubbered it up. It was a good racy track though.”

“I have to thank the guys behind me for not roughing me up too much trying to get by. In the back of your mind you know who’s behind you, but you just try to focus on hitting your marks. Just be as consistent as you can. I had some car issues of my own, so I had my hands full all night.”

IMCA Southern Sportmods

Looking to defend his 2008 IMCA Southern Sportmod title, three-time champ Keith White took the first of the IMCA Sportmod Regional races. White tracked early leader Danny Hogue and made a high side move to get the top spot on lap 15. From there White inched away from Hogue and the rest of the field to take the checkers.

Hogue jumped out front on green, but Jeff Turner and Tommy Fain got tangled in mid-pack to bring out the caution. Hogue repeated the move on the second start, with White getting by Chris Meyers for second. The top five quickly sorted out single file, with Turner and Bill Pittaway side by side for seventh. Pittaway finally secured the spot on lap five with White now turning up the heat on Hogue.

White tried the high side on lap 7, but Hogue slammed the door. Turner took sixth from Pittaway on lap eight after Josh McGaha began to fade. At halfway the top five were Hogue, White, Myers, Justin Shaw and Gabe Tucker. White again looked high on lap 11, but backed off when the back stretch wall came up.

White regrouped for another charge on lap 14 and shot by Hogue coming out of turn 2 to take the lead on lap 15.

Just as Tucker was making a move on Shaw for fourth, Tyler Fain spun to bring out a yellow on lap 16.

Everyone got away clean on the restart with White easing away from Hogue. At the checkers it was White by a comfortable margin in the Traceys Auto Sales, Braka Operating, All Tex Cabling, Tubbs Paint & Body, TCI, Belton Metals, Carroll’s Race Engines, Big Chief Chassis.

“This made up for Friday night,” stated White. “It definitely paid more. I don’t think the track owed us one, flats happen. It was a good race. Danny Hogue and I had a good hard fought race. It was fun. We talked about it again this morning and they had as good of time as I did. You can’t beat that.”

“I picked the only spot you could really pass on. I knew it was tight up there. I smacked the wall in the same spot with my Modified. We hung bumpers a couple times and I had to drive it to the right to get off him. I thought the Sprint Cars would tighten up the track more. I ran the B-main in the Modified and it was tighter than the Sportmod feature.”

“A double on Sunday would be good. It would be nice with two (wins) in each class. That’s probably high hopes, but we came here to win.”

Veteran Modified driver Vince Ogle missed making the main by one spot, but made up for it as the Lubbock pilot took it out on the IMCA Stock Car field. Ogle led flag to flag surviving challenges from several drivers along with three-wide action.

The 20-lap I-Stock main started with Matt Guillaume, Ogle and Jeremy Gettler going three wide for the lead with Ogle coming out on top. As that battle settled down, Billy Wade and TJ Wilson were side by side for fourth. As the top three continued to run nose to tail, with Gettler taking a look inside on lap four.

Jason Batt spun in tun four, while Eric Jones rolled to a stop on the back stretch to bring out the yellow.

Kevin Opheim made a big move on the restart, but got into Guillaume sending him around. Guillaume was able to keep rolling but Opheim began to fade with flat, separating the field. This left Ogle with a good lead over Gettler and Wilson, who had a gap back to Duain Pritchett and Dustin Locke at the mid-point of the race.

Wilson battled to get around Gettler getting by on lap 12, while Pritchett closed on Gettler. Wilson caught Ogle for the lead and took a look inside on lap 14, but was not able to complete the pass. The lead quartet caught traffic on lap 15 with Ogle getting through clean. Wilson got hung up with the lapped car of Wayne Stremmel sending them both around. Wilson never stopped, but Stremmel was unable to go bringing out a caution.

With the yellow charged to Stremmel, Wilson got his spot back for the restart and as green waved again Ogle, Wilson and Gettler were three wide for the lead. Ogle and Wilson traded some paint with Wilson ending up on the back stretch wall to bring the caution back out.

Once back to green Ogle had Gettler again taking a look inside for the lead. Gettler also had Pritchett to deal with as Pritchett was trying to top groove looking for second. Gettler gave it his best shot on the last lap but slid high off turn 1 loosing numerous spots. As Pritchett and Locke ran door to door for second, Ogle in a car owned by Earl Johnson and sponsored by Fletcher Motorsports, Carburetor Corner, was taking the surprise win.

“The owner (Earl Johnson) does a good job on the car and keeps in going,” replied Ogle. “I knew after the Modified race that you could make it work through the middle. If I just ran up towards the top they might under me going in, but I could hold them off coming out(of the corner). Earl will get over and get a wrench on it if I tell what I need”

“I was pretty worried about that three wide restart. The track is kind of narrow to go three wide. It all came out good for me.”

Proving Friday night was no fluke, Ft. Worth’s Allen Montgomery again showed the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock field nothing but his rear bumper. Picking of where he left off, Montgomery grabbed the point on lap 1 and never looked back. Jeff Kinniard made a run at Montgomery on the final lap but came up short giving Montgomery the back to back wins.

When green waved at the start of the 20 lapper, Montgomery beat Colby Deming into turn 1 for the lead. David Bissonette got pas Deming on lap two for second. The top five singled themselves out with Bryan Sewell and Andy Roller door to door for sixth. Kinniard got along side Deming on lap 6 and took third. Tobie Talk brought out the caution on lap 7 when he spun in turn four.

On the restart Bissonette took a quick look on Montgomery, with Kinniard and Deming again side by side and Sewell getting around Charles Cosper for fifth. Coming to the midway point it was Montgomery, Bissonette, Kinniard, Deming and Sewell in the top five. Deming would slap and nearly climb the back stretch wall on lap 10 ending is top-five run.

Shortly after green waved again Kinniard made a move on Bissonette getting along side on lap 15. Sewell closed in on that duo almost going three wide on lap 16. This gave Montgomery the chance to put some distance on the trio. Kinniard got by Bissonette on lap 17 and went on a charge for the leader. Kinniard caught Montgomery as the white flag waved but came up a little short as Montgomery in the Ace Tire Service, Extreme Graphics, Texas Star Racing, Matt’s Repair, Destroyer Chassis took the back to back win.

“Tonight was just mainly luck,” said Montgomery. “I drew number one and just held on to it. The car wasn’t working as good as it was last night. It was fast enough I guess. I was able to stay up there. The track rubbered up a lot more than I thought. I had it too tight and it wouldn’t turn in the center of the corner.”

“All I hope for is a top four every night. To sweep the weekend, that would be great. Two years ago I won 13 races, last year I didn’t win any. You never know when your last one will be so you make the best out of every one you get.”

The Jr Mini Stock feature came down to the last lap before it was settled. Aaron Elliott had stayed glued on Bryce Pritchett’s bumper for he entire race. As the two youngsters took the white flag it was till anyone’s race. Going into turn three the two made contact with Pritchett getting worst of it as he spun around. At the checkers it was 13 year-old, Elliott in the Pinto sponsored by David Elliott, Fletcher Motorsports, L&M Farms and Tin Top Customs, taking the victory.

Paris Motor Speedway opens the 2009 season with its second annual Pat Bunch Memorial special on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.

IMCA Modifieds race for $1,000 to win and a minimum of $100 to start their Fast Shafts All-Star qualifying features both nights.

Southern SportMods also chase a top check of $1,000 while IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars vie for $500 to win at both shows.

All applicable IMCA points will be awarded for the two programs. Entry fees and tow money for the Modifieds and Southern SportMods is $50, and $25 for the Stock Cars.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing to follow on Friday. Gates open at 2 p.m. Saturday, hot laps are at 4 p.m. and racing follows.

Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $6 for kids 6-12 and five and under get in free. Pit passes are $30.

An open practice is from 5-10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Pit passes are $20 and there is no charge to get into the grand stand.

White, Fox, Van Genderen, Montgomery top first night features at Abilene’s Ice Breaker

Keith White bounced back from a last-place showing in one IMCA feature with a first-place finish in another on Friday, opening night of the Ice Breaker special at Abilene Speedway.

Sidelined by a flat tire in the Southern SportMod main, White led the distance in winning the Modified feature, holding Robbie Edwards at bay late in the contest for the $500 victory.

Other winners during the first sanctioned program of the new season in Texas were Gary Fox in the SportMods, Iowa traveler Mike Van Genderen in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Allen Montgomery in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks.

White and Jeff Emerson drew front row starts for the Modified feature. White was in front by the second set of turns and Edwards slipped past Emerson on lap two.

Emerson, Monte Bolton, Chris Bragg and Danny Hogue jockeyed behind the front pair. Coming to midway point, Edwards was all over White for the lead with Emerson, Bolton and Bragg looking for their own opportunities.

Edwards got his nose outside White on a lap 12 restart, but White closed the door on the front stretch. Bolton tried Edwards for second on lap 14 but fell back in line. Bolton got alongside Edwards before the final caution came the next time around.

After several tries to get around White up top, Edwards gave it one more shot on lap 18, this time trying the low side. Once again, the White was up to the challenge, holding the front spot and going on to the win.

Fox started on the pole but fell back during the early stages of the SportMod 20-lapper. Coming on in the second half of the race, Fox got by Bobby Sikes Jr. for the lead and then inched away to take the checkers.

Sikes, Fox and Matt Mueller dueled early before Mueller lost ground and made contact with White on lap seven. That incident wound up sending the three-time national champion to the pits with a flat; Mueller came to a stop two laps later with a flat of his own and brought out the caution.

Fox made his move on lap 12 to get around Sikes, who tried to fight back on the low groove. The yellow waved on lap 15 when 2007 national king Jeff Turner pulled to a stop. Fox got away clean on the restart and inched away from Sikes over the final five laps.

Van Genderen added his name to the Stock Car record books after surviving a multi-car tussle, then battling past Turner for the lead in the final laps for the win.

The scrap came just before the halfway point and allowed Van Genderen to take over second.

Van Genderen got his bumper out front on lap 16, but Turner didn’t give up easily. With two laps to go, Van Genderen finally secured the position and eked away.

Montgomery got the lead from Todd Reitzler on lap six and eased away for the Hobby Stock win.

With Reitzler and Jeff Kinniard battling behind him, Montgomery opened up a lead and put lapped traffic in the middle. Kinniard got past Reitzler for second well behind Montgomery on the final circuit.

More than 160 drivers from seven states competed in the opening Ice Breaker program.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. on Saturday for the second of three weekend shows at Abilene. Hot laps are at 5 p.m. and racing is at 7 p.m.

SportMods race for $750 to win in their first regional event of 2009. First place in the Modified main pays $500, Stocks chase a top prize of $300 and Hobbies run for $250 to win.

All four sanctioned divisions run again Sunday.
