Tommy Bryant Bags ASCS Lone Star Sprint Car win at Cowtown/s November Sprint Shootout

Tommy Bryant bagged his third American Sprint Car Series regional win of the year by topping Cowtown Speedway’s Fourth Annual November Sprint Shootout 35-lap championship feature event on Saturday night.

While Bryant tacked the season-ending ASCS Lone Star feature win on to a pair of previous ASCS Gulf South wins, it was Eric Baldaccini coming away with the 2010 ASCS Lone Star championship.

Bryant started Saturday night’s main event from the pole position, but it was fellow Gulf South shoe and 2009 champ Aaron Reutzel leading the initial handful of laps before running afoul of lapped traffic.

Bryant assumed the point and led the rest of the way aboard Todd Evans’ Sport Clips No. 14e machine for his seventh career ASCS Regional win in front of Justin Melton, with Andy Shouse, newly-crowned ASCS Gulf South champ Ray Allen Kulhanek and Kevin Ramey rounding out the top five.

Brandon Berryman was sixth, with Claud Estes, 20th-starter Travis Elliott, 19th-starter J.P. Bailey and Rafe Essary completing the top ten.

Despite a 19th place finish in the season finale, 22-year-old Baldaccini of Keller, TX, claimed the ASCS Lone Star title by an 81-point margin over Claud Estes.

Kolt Walker, D.J. Estes, Melton, Ramey and Brian McClelland won Saturday night’s heat races, with Bailey and Elliott winning the “B” Mains.

Claude Estes takes ASCS Red River Challenge honors at Cowtown Speedway

Claud Estes became the second first-time ASCS Red River Challenge victor in as many nights by topping Saturday night’s 25-lap ASCS Lone Star vs. American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region main event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway dirt oval.

The ASCS Lone Star rep from Godley, TX, fought off past ASCS Sooner champion Andy Shouse over the final rounds for the $2,000 triumph, his first in Lone Star action and first ASCS triumph since a Gulf South score at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway in June of 2004.

Estes took Saturday night’s checkered flag aboard the Texas United Bank Card/Skyvue Corp. No. 74e ahead of Shouse, with Kevin Ramey, George White and current ASCS Lone Star points leader Eric Baldaccini rounding out the top five.

Brian McClelland was sixth, with Michael Lang, J.P. Bailey, 19th-starter Brandon Corn and Ryan Hall completing the top ten.

Skip Wilson, Estes, Kolt Walker and Kenneth Walker topped heat race action, with Corn flourishing in the “B” Main.

Mother Nature finishes off Cowtown Speedway’s ASCS Sprint Nationals

With Sunday’s Second Annual Cowtown Sprint Nationals feature lineup finally set, Mother Nature stepped in and finished off the event with one final torrent of showers that proved to be too much to overcome.

After 71 cars battled through Saturday night’s preliminary event, 65 competitors returned for Sunday’s $8,000-to-win Cowtown Sprint Nationals finale, the season-ending event for the ASCS Gulf South, Lone Star and Sooner Regions that had already been pushed back one day by inclement weather.

After Joe Wood, Jr., Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Tommy Bryant, Travis Rilat, Jack Dover, Sammy Swindell and Seth Bergman topped Sunday’s heat races, proceedings were delayed by an initial wave of showers.

However, once the first round of rain subsided, the track was worked back in with Aaron Reutzel, Brian McClelland and Michael Lang then winning the “B” Mains.

Just as the final “B” Main exited the track, the skies opened up, rendering the high-banked, ¼-mile dirt oval unsuitable for any further racing action.

With no rain date available, the feature purse was paid out among the 25 scheduled starters with the top six starters splitting the top six finishing payouts, seventh through 12th splitting the finishing payouts for those positions and so on.

Taking the lion’s share of the $29,750 feature purse were Saturday night’s top four finishers (Tony Bruce, Jr., Tim Crawley, Scottie McDonald and Jesse Hockett) along with Sunday’s top two passing points earners (Sammy Swindell and Tommy Bryant). Those six drivers each pocketed $3,250.

While 19-year-old Aaron Reutzel finished off the ASCS Gulf South championship by simply showing up on Sunday and Kevin Ramey locked up the inaugural ASCS Lone Star title on Saturday night, Joe Wood, Jr., put the clamps on the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region title by making the cut for Sunday’s feature.

Tony Bruce, Jr., tops ASCS Cowtown Speedway Sprint Nationals prelim

Tony Bruce, Jr., snared his third overall American Sprint Car Series feature win of the year by topping Saturday night’s Second Annual Cowtown Sprint Nationals 30-lap preliminary feature event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway dirt oval.

The Liberal, KS, shoe took the top spot away from race-long leader Tim Crawley on the 19th round en route to taking the $2,000 winner’s share aboard the Rider-powered No. 18 Maxim.

Bruce took the checkered flag in front of fellow Lucas Oil Sprint Car title contender Crawley, with ASCS Gulf South rep Scottie McDonald and Lucas Oil Sprint Car shoe Jesse Hockett also locking into Sunday’s $8,000-to-win Cowtown Sprint Nationals finale by finishing third and fourth, respectively.

After cutting a front tire eleven laps into the main event, Travis Rilat rallied from the tail of the field to round out the top five, with two-time ASCS Sooner king Brian McClelland in sixth.

Kevin Ramey locked up the inaugural ASCS Lone Star championship by finishing seventh, with Johnny Herrera, 17th-starter Sammy Swindell and 22nd-starter Donnie Ray Crawford completing the top ten.

Three ASCS Sprint Car Champions to be crowned at the Cowtown Speedway Nationals this weekend

Roger Crockett, Jason Danley, Bryan Howland, Brett Mann and Jake Ossenfort have each already collected ASCS Regional championships in 2009.

Now, another three drivers will be crowned simultaneously at this weekend’s second annual Cowtown Sprint Nationals at Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, TX, this weekend.

The ASCS Gulf South, Lone Star and Sooner Regions converge upon the high-banked, ¼-mile dirt oval for two full nights of competition this Friday and Saturday, with Aaron Reutzel, Kevin Ramey and Joe Wood, Jr., leading their respective regions into the weekend double dip.

While Reutzel (134 point lead) and Ramey (167 point lead) both have their Regional point chases virtually locked up, Wood, Jr., isn’t entirely out of the woods yet as Matt Covington is just 30 points out of the lead.

Vying for his first American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region championship, Oklahoma City’s Wood can secure the crown with a solid weekend. However, if things go south for Wood, 19-year-old Glenpool, OK, shoe Matt Covington is right there to take quick advantage.

Fort Worth’s Ramey, a former two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion, needs to do little more than show up both nights to put the wraps on the inaugural ASCS Lone Star championship, while 19-year-old Reutzel of Clute, TX, has plenty of breathing room in the ASCS Gulf South chase after this past weekend’s competition.

The ninth year of American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region action has consisted of ten events at five tracks throughout Oklahoma as well as Missouri and north Texas. This weekend’s action will be the first Sooner stops of the year at Cowtown.

The eighth year of ASCS Gulf South Region competition has consisted of 23 nights of racing action at nine different tracks throughout primarily southern Texas. This weekend marks the first ASCS Gulf South events of the year at Cowtown Speedway.

The inaugural year of ASCS Lone Star Regional action has consisted of 14 nights of competition at nine different tracks primarily throughout northern Texas, including three events at Cowtown Speedway.

After a stretch of nine different winners in as many ASCS Regional events at Cowtown Speedway over the course of 2007 and 2008, Kevin Ramey was within a lap of sweeping this year’s three Lone Star events at Cowtown. After victories on April 4 and June 27, only last-lap contact with Travis Rilat that sent Ramey out of the park denied the hat trick on August 29. Instead, it was Rilat taking his fourth career ASCS Regional win atop the Cowtown dirt oval.

Travis Rilat rounds up ASCS Lone Star Region win at Cowtown Speedway

The Kennedale parking lot challenge came to the most spectacular of conclusions at Cowtown Speedway on Saturday night, with Travis Rilat ultimately standing in victory lane when the checkered flag flew upon the evening’s 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Lone Star feature event.

And, after a last-lap scramble for the lead that sent Kevin Ramey out of the park, the roar from the crowd was an undeniable one, a hearty mix of both cheers and jeers directed towards the Forney, TX, racer.

“You know they’ll be back in October for the ASCS Cowtown Sprint Nationals after that one,” Rilat commented afterward.

Ramey, who started the feature event inside the third row alongside Rilat, had battled past early pacesetter Matt Clevenger on the 14th circuit and was closing in on his fourth series triumph of the year aboard Ray Williams’ No. 7m entry.

But, as heavy traffic became a factor in the final rounds, Rilat quickly began closing the gap on the leader after taking second away from Clevenger on the 18th circuit.

On Ramey’s tailtank as the white flag flew, Rilat dove to the bottom of the track entering turn one and edged ahead as the pair raced off turn two with Ramey on the top side.

Wheel-to-wheel down the backstretch and approaching turn three, contact was made and the current ASCS Lone Star point leader tumbled several times before launching over the turn three retaining wall and out of sight into the back pit area.

“I had him passed coming off of two,” Rilat explained afterward. “I was moving to the top to get into three and he just drove right over my right rear.”

Ramey likely disagreed with that account, as evidenced by his march down the backstretch to Rilat’s mount parked in turn two, where some pleasantries were exchanged among the drivers and several crew members.

With the stage set for a green-white-checkered run after the lap 25 mishap, Rilat raced on to the stripe unchallenged aboard the Shark-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X for his 17th career ASCS Regional triumph and 41st overall ASCS victory.

Rilat’s apparent $1,500 payday was bolstered in a big way by www.shoptheboss.com, which anted up $3,600 worth of hardwood flooring for the triumph, making the night’s take worth $5,100.

Rilat was chased to the stripe by Matt Clevenger, who settled for runner-up honors after pacing the initial 13 circuits. “We had a first place car, just didn’t get the job done,” a disappointed Clevenger explained.

Eric Baldaccini claimed the show position, while current ASCS Southwest points leader Ben Gregg of Phoenix, AZ, charged from 16th to claim fourth at the stripe. George White rounded out the top five, with Marvin Lough in sixth.

Skip Wilson rebounded from a lap 12 incident in which Brian Parker got upside down in turn one to finish seventh, with Claud Estes, Scott Reneau and 17th-starter Brian McClelland completing the top ten.

Baldaccini, Kolt Walker, Ramey and Clevenger topped Saturday night’s heat race action, with McClelland winning the 15-lap “B” Main.

Ramey was credited with a 15th place finish in the final rundown, escaping the night with a 135-point advantage over Brad Welborn, who scratched from “B” Main action with engine woes.

ASCS Lone Star competition continues with next weekend’s double versus the ASCS Gulf South Region at Crandall’s RPM Speedway on Friday night and then Mesquite’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday night.

ASCS Lone Star Region visits Kennedale Speeway Park and Cowtown Speedway this weekend

There’s not another layout like it. No other site has two different dirt tracks separated by little more than a parking lot.

Sprint Car fans will have the opportunity to check out this unique configuration this weekend near Fort Worth, TX, as the American Sprint Car Series Lone Star Region takes to the pair of Kennedale ¼-mile clay ovals.

On Friday night, the series invades Kennedale Speedway Park. Then, on Saturday night, it’s a couple of hundred yards across the parking lot to the high banks of Cowtown Speedway.

Kevin Ramey, who was topped both Lone Star events at Cowtown this year, leads the way into the weekend with an 86-point advantage in the chase for the inaugural ASCS Lone Star championship. The Fort Worth shoe is trying to add Lone Star accolades to a pair of previous Sooner Region crowns.

Ramey’s closest chaser is Brad Welborn, an ASCS winner at Cowtown last year. Welborn is 48 markers ahead of Flower Mound’s Justin Melton, with fellow Flower Mound shoe Matt Clevenger and Godley’s Claud Estes rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten in Lone Star points includes Mesquite’s Michael Lang, Keller’s Eric Baldaccini, Graham’s Kolt Walker, Kemp’s Scott Reneau and Burleson’s John Ricketts.

While Ramey has topped both previous Lone Star events at Cowtown this season, Baldaccini took top honors in the series’ lone previous stop at Kennedale Speedway Park.

This weekend’s Kennedale Speedway Park-Cowtown double marks the first of three consecutive weekends of Lone Star competition, with challenge events versus the ASCS Gulf South Region at Crandall’s RPM Speedway and Mesquite’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Labor Day weekend (September 4-5) followed up by a September 12 stop at Kilgore’s Lone Star Speedway.

Both nights of racing action are slated to get under way at 7:00 p.m.

The pair of Kennedale, TX, tracks are located just east of Fort Worth off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road.

Kevin Ramey ropes ASCS Lone Star trophy at Cowtown

Kevin Ramey became the first repeat winner in American Sprint Car Series Lone Star Region competition by winning Saturday night’s 25-lap feature event atop the high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway clay oval.

Advancing from the third row, Ramey took the point away from race-long leader George White on the 18th round en route to the $2,000 triumph aboard the Williams Motorsports Wells-powered City Vending/Melray Oil & Gas No. 7m entry.

The two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion padded his points lead in the inaugural Lone Star title chase by taking the checkered flag in front of White, with Memphis shoe Don Young, Justin Melton and Brad Welborn rounding out the top five.

Skip Wilson was sixth, with Robert Sellers, Brandon Berryman, Claud Estes and Scott Reneau completing the top ten.

Kris Miller, Estes, Ramey and Melton topped heat race action for the 30-car field, with Michael Lang winning the “B” Main.

Kevin Ramey - broken leg and all - set for Cowtown ASCS Lone Star Region Sprint Car race on Saturday

It was supposed to be a Texas Double for the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) Lone Star Region Sprint Cars, but RMP Speedway’s Friday show has been rained out leaving only the Cowtown Speedway portion to be contested.

Not even a broken leg can keep Kevin Ramey down, as the Fort Worth shoe leads the ASCS Lone Star Region into the Cowtown Speedway event this Saturday.

Friday’s card at RPM Speedway in Crandall, TX, - had it not been called off due to weather - would have marked the first Sprint Car event at the new facility, while Saturday’s $2,000 to win event takes place at Kennedale’s Cowtown Speedway, a Sprint Car racing haven.

After fracturing his left leg just below the knee in an April 25 crash at Cowtown Speedway, a hobbled Ramey climbed back into his rebuilt Sprint Car for this past weekend’s ASCS Lone Star vs. Sooner Region Shootout despite medical orders to the contrary.

And, the two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion responded with a pair of solid top-ten feature runs, including an eighth-place showing among Friday night’s 56-car field at Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway and then a fourth-place run among 44 entries Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Dallas.

Those finishes, combined with a runner-up showing at Waco and a Cowtown win during the inaugural weekend of ASCS Lone Star competition, have allowed Ramey to open up a 68-point advantage over Princeton, Texas’ Brad Welborn in the Lone Star title chase.

While Welborn enters the weekend as Ramey’s closest chaser, the firefighter is just eight markers ahead of Oklahoma shoe Brian McClelland. McClelland is pursuing both the ASCS Sooner and Lone Star championships in 2009 after posting back-to-back Sooner titles in 2007 and 2008.

Flower Mound’s Matt Clevenger enters the weekend ranked fourth, with Fort Worth’s J.P. Bailey rounding out the current top five. The balance of the top ten includes Kolt Walker (Graham, TX), Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX), Claud Estes (Godley, TX) and Michael Lang (Mesquite, TX).

Cowtown Speedway has had nine different winners in the last nine ASCS Regional events atop the high-speed, high-banked dirt oval. Ramey is the series most recent winner at Cowtown with his April 4 triumph snapping a victory drought in ASCS competition of 41 nights.

With three overall ASCS wins at Cowtown, Ramey is just one of three drivers to post multiple series victories at the facility. Matching Ramey, Travis Rilat has posted three Cowtown wins while Sam Hafertepe, Jr., has topped two features. Last year’s Cowtown ASCS winners included Rilat, Gary Taylor, Brad Welborn, Kolt Walker, Gavin Punch and Brian Brown.

Saturday’s card at Cowtown Speedway is firing off at 7:00 p.m.

The inaugural season of ASCS Lone Star Region competition will consist of 18 events at nine different tracks throughout North Texas along with one venture north of the Red River to Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.

USMTS Modifieds to battle at Cowtown on Saturday, Heart O’ Texas on Sunday

A USMTS Southern Series tripleheader is on tap for this weekend with a trio of West Region battles worth $2,000 to win each. A big field of cars are expected at each event where local aces have a real chance of keeping the winner’s share of the purses close to home.

FRIDAY, MAY 1 - LAKE COUNTRY SPEEDWAY

On Friday, May 1, the Lake Country Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., will host the USMTS Southern Series for a second straight season. Jason Hughes picked up his first USMTS Southern Series victory of the season as 56 top-flight Modified teams duked it out in the inaugural event at Ronny Gould’s speedplant. Hughes held off Jamie Burford and Steve Holzkamper in a fireworks-filled feature, then went on to capture the USMTS Southern Series championship crown.

Also on the racing card will be USRA Southern Limited Modifieds and Hobby Stocks with pit gates opening at 4:30, grandstands at 5:00, hot laps beginning at 6:30 and the first heat race slated to take the green flag at 7:00.

SATURDAY, MAY 2 - COWTOWN SPEEDWAY

The series makes a return visit to the Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas, on Saturday, May 2, as the touring titans look to regain some respect after local drivers swept the top three spots in last year’s debut.

“This is our house,” exclaimed George White in victory lane. “Ain’t nobody taking our money home.”

With 56 entries on hand, White led an impressive showing by the local contingent as Cowtown Speedway drivers finished 1-2-3 in the main event as the USMTS Southern Series drivers made their debut at the lightning-fast facility. Bryan Sugg while Glenn Leuschner grabbed third. The first 26 laps of the 40-lap main event belonged to Eddie Martin before a flat tire ended the runaway leader’s hopes of winning.

USRA Southern Limited Modifieds, Winged 600s, Street Stocks and Bombers will also compete. Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstands open up at 5:00, hot laps get going at 6:30 and the mud starts flying at 7:00.

SUNDAY, MAY 3 - HEART O’ TEXAS SPEEDWAY

On Sunday, May 3, race fans at the Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Elm Mott, Texas, get their first look at the stars and cars of the USMTS Southern Series. Just like Cowtown last year, HOT Speedway regulars have an advantage over the first-time invaders. Keith White, Benji Kirkpatrick, Justin Radcliff, Eric Tomlinson, Jimmie Helona, Chase Jupe, Johnny Sheets, Cody Daniel, Wesley Dulock, Pat McGuire and Keith Green are just a few of the names that are expected to defend their home turf.

The USRA Southern Limited Modifieds and Mini-Sprints are also on the menu. Eight-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock will climb behind the wheel of Shannon “Slider” Young’s #1 Centex Motorsports powered QWIK Chassis to compete with the USRA Southern Limited Modifieds.

Pit gates open at 3:00, grandstands open at 4:00, hot laps start at 5:30 and the racing action kicks off at 6:00.
