  12. Final Points Night @ I-37 Speedway, 10-3-20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton TX.,(Oct. 3Rd, 2020) Final points night, full moon, what could go wrong? The regular I-37 Speedway comes to an end tonight with three of five regular class points races(USRA Limited Modified and Factory Stocks, Late Models) up for grabs, sort of. Plus after a one-two finish by Steve Whiteaker jr and Johnny Torres last race the 'Bounty' was still up for grabs with an addition $100 added and another $100 for anyone winning as a first time visitor. The IMCA points chase ended last race with Chris Carroll taking the track championship ahead of Rick Green, Robert Liese jr, Ryan Doyon and Johnny Melancon. In USRA Tuners, a national points event in Iowa this weekend ended the track points season for them giving Brian Schoenbaum the title over Jamie Garner, Brandon McCall, Adam Tracy and Adolph Tracy. Schoenbaum, who also leads the USRA National Points, is attending the USRA Nationals in Webster City, Ia. USRA Limited Modifieds have Johnny Torres with an untouchable lead over Ryan Doyon, Talon Minten, Sterling Tausch and Robby Minten. Torres is currently third in USRA National points with another south Texas area competitor, Jared Maupin fourth on the national list. The Late Model points shake out with Frank Okruhlik coming into the night with a big enough lead to secure the track points race ahead of Landon Sowder, Howie Marcx, Trey Votion and Aaron Driscoll. The only points race up in the air is USRA Factory stocks, but by making lap in the heat race, Josh Sewell will lock up that championship. Mike Lyon, Michael Keylich, Dustin Hurley and Jesse Sandoval complete the top five. Maupin Grabs Modified Money As green waved on the IMCA Modified field Robby Minten and Jared Maupin stayed wheel to wheel through turns 1-2. R. Minten finally secured the spot to lead lap 1 chased by Maupin, Ryan Doyon, Talon Minten and Chris Swenson. Chandler Fox spun in turn 2 which was a break for R. Minten who also looped it seconds later in turn 4. On the restart Maupin, Doyon and Swenson were nearly three wide for second. By lap 5 R. Minten had starting to gap Maupin, while Swenson kept the pressure on Doyon for third. At halfway it was R. Minten, Maupin, Doyon, Swenson and T. Minten. Maupin changed his line and began making up distance on R. Minten for the lead. Maupin caught R. Minten using the middle line as R. Minten stayed on the top. Maupin showed the nose a couple times through the corners and R. Minten made a mistake going around in turn 4 again on lap 12. This put Maupin in the lead for the restart that saw Swenson get past Doyon for second. That left Doyon three wide with Rick Green and T. Minten. A late spin by Landon Bednarz rebunched the field, but Maupin(College Station) got away quickly to half straightaway advantage as he went on to the checkers in his BMF Shocks & Chassis, Rick Pollaro owned, crate powered, Longhorn Chassis. “This makes up for last weekend,” said Maupin. “It's a great way to top things off. We knew we had to fix some mistakes and clean up things. This made up for everything. This car has been good off the bat since Rick Pollaro bought it from Dillon Tindall. Our driving styles are different so we did a little tweeking to suit my style. It's been a good piece.” “The track was tricky. We were hunting the top. Once I reeled him in I wanted to show myself and see if he'd make a mistake. I you showed him the nose enough times, that he did.” “I couldn't tell if I was over driving or the track going away. I was having to search around to find the groove the car felt better in. Oakes was first to turn 1 trailed by Johnny Torres, JJ Jennings, Steve Whiteaker and Dustin Butcher but a spin by Gary Hall restacked the field. On the restart Jennings took third from Torres as Whiteaker began challenging Oakes for the lead. The two were side by side, while Jared Maupin got by Butcher and Anthony Gordon for fourth. Jennings top three run ended on lap 6 when he slowed and stopped. After another quick spin and caution, Whiteaker was looking low on Oakes for the lead while Torres was trying the high side on Whiteaker for second. At the crossed flags it was Oakes, Whiteaker, Torres, Maupin and Gordon in the top five with Butcher, Ryan Doyon and Heath Stewart three wide for sixth. Oakes missed the top line and gave Whiteaker an opportunity to close in and get inside. Two laps later Oakes again missed the exit off the top and slapped the front stretch wall. This gave Whiteaker the opening to take the point on lap 17 as Oakes stopped for a late caution. Whiteaker got away clean on the restart while Maupin and Gordon battled for third. At the checkers it was Whiteaker(Robstown) taking his third win in row in the D&SS Construction, First Class Towing Service, Parker Lee Project, Cottrell Racing, South Texas Speedway, Churches Chicken, G&M Oilfield Services, WW bodies, Dark Horse Racing Shocks, Best Race Engines, Innovative Chassis. “I don’t think I could have passed Edward(Oakes) if he didn’t make that big mistake,” replied Whiteaker. “Turns 1&2 we’re just too fast up top. At the end I felt my car was faster than his but passing him was going to be a different story.” “Our best engine has been put to the rest this year at I-37 with the hammer down tracks that’s for sure. It just feels good to race again. I hardly raced any in 2018 and 2019. That’s three in a row, five wins and two 2nds out of seven starts. Jamie Campbell broke and slowed for a quick yellow. Back to green Kelly and Hardage were door to door for second. Coming to midway it was Okruhlik, Hardage looking inside, Kelly, Votion and Landon Sowder in the top five. Just as Hardage got along side Okruhlik, Kelly looped it for a lap 12 yellow. Once back to green, Hardage got a run off the top of turn 2 to get the lead on lap 16. Kelly was quickly working his way back up going past Fambro and Sowder for fourth. Up front it was now Hardage(Seguin) inching away from Okruhlik and going unchallenged for the victory in his Billy Bobs Repair and Tire, Lonestar Pressure Equipment, Swenson Racing Shocks, Carroll Construction, Precision Welding, WRP Racing Products, All in Designs, GM crate powered Longhorn Chassis. “Frank(Okruhlik) was good on top,” said Hardage. “I was good up top too, but couldn't drive through him. When I tried the bottom he was faster than I was. I sent it in there a couple to hope he would see me and move, he did. I took advantage of that.” “We've raced together so I figured he'd try to protect once he saw me. I didn't know if it would stick down there. It stuck enough that he could see me. Sometime running a limited schedule I'm a little rusty. Tonight I was. This is the best the car has ever been. We finally got it freed up enough to run the top.” “These cars are a lot of work. Every nut and bolt gets checked between races, make sure everything is still in the right place, nothing is worn out. GW Hessong led the 23-car field into turn 1, but it was Johnny Torres getting the lead off turn 4. Behind him, Hessong, Dustin Hurley, Wade Jones and Mike Lyon fell in line. In the pack Michael Keylich went around collecting Jacob Burnett, Jerry Miller, Frank Okruhlik, Clint Montanio and Aaron Leddy. Another spin by Kasey Krauss on the restart was a near miss by the field. Dustin Hurley was next to be bitten by the contenders curse spinning from third. This left Hessong, Jones and Riley Heil now three wide for the second spot. Hessong got by Jones low for second with Heil still looking up top and Dillon Gaither getting fifth from Robert Kelm. Points leader, Josh Sewell had his trouble on lap 6 going around and collecting Anthony Gordon. On the single file restart Hessong was looking up top on Torres for the lead with Gaither taking fourth from Heil. Hessong got the lead on lap 8 with Ray Doyon, John Lieta and Jesse Sandoval three wide for sixth. At the mid point it was Hessong, Torres, Jones, Gaither and Heil in the top five. While battling for fifth Heil and Ray Doyon made contact with Heil going around on lap 15. Coming to green on the restart the pack stacked up in turn 4 collecting Doyon, Lieta and Mike Lyon. As green flew again, Torres gave Hessong, who was now showing some smoke, a look inside with Allen Alexander moving up to fifth. Gaither got a run on Jones to grab third with three to go, taking the spot. Gaither then moved in to battle with Torres for second with two to go. This gave Hessong, still trailing some smoke, the chance to creep away slightly. On the last lap Gaither got second from Torres, but it was Hessong(Edna), hanging on despite the smoke, in the Magnum Services, Magnum Motorsports, Edna Auto Supply, Tonys Mobile Home Service, Lieta Farms, Rock Motors, Lick my Stack Cooking Team, Wicked Transmission, Destroyer Chassis. “I smoked it a little bit, but I didn't hurt it.” reported Hessong. “I kept on watching the oil pressure and we were good. So I just kept her hammer down. I was following Johnny(Torres) for the longest time and not getting anywhere. On that single file restart I thought I'd just sail it off in there on the top and hope it sticks. I did it, and it stuck. I was able to pull it off.” “This is the sixth night on the car, We took it to a couple shows in north Texas and picked up a win in Kennedale. Two wins in a row, two different tracks, that's pretty good. I'm just now finding the set up that works. I might make a spring adjustment. I try not to change anything. We'll see from here on out.” “This was a bare cage when we got it. A lot of us built the car in two and half weeks. Tracy tried the high side and got a good run, but almost overshot turns 3-4 falling back to eighth. Up front, Mayberry got under Lopez for the lead on lap 4. Lopez began leaking fluid causing Sparks to spin in turn 3. Lopez was checked and forced to pit. Back to green, Tracy again trying the high side went around and collected Kyle Workman. Finally back to racing it was K. Keylich pressuring Mayberry for the lead. K. Keylich got by for the point on lap 8 bringing Hunter Peterson along to second as Mayberry went around. Peterson tried the middle on the restart to get by K. Keylich, but was unable to get the spot. Peterson then moved to the low side, while Tracy was back up top. As the white waved it was three wide for the lead in turns 1-2. Coming to the line it was K. Keylich(La Vernia) by a bumper in her Double K Landscaping, Jenns Spirits, Keylich Electric, CPU Repair, All in Designs, Outlaw Chassis eking out the win. Beginner Factory Stocks 44k Katherine Keylich, 34h Hunter Peterson, 22t Adam Tracy, 40k Kyle Workman, 22 Ronnie Sparks, 22m Robert Mayberry, 6p Jeremy Hernandez, 92r Robert Keylich, 28 Daniel Lopez Beginner Factory Stock heats Heat 1; 28 Daniel Lopez, 22m Robert Mayberry, 6p Jeremy Hernandez, 40k Kyle Workman, 92r Robert Keylich Heat 2; 44k Katherine Keylich, 22t Adam Tracy, 22 Ronnie Sparks, 34h Hunter Peterson Garners Gets Green in Tuners Jamie Garner and Johnathon Cervantes stayed door to door off turn turn 2 before Garner got the lead with Cervantes, Dylan Kowalik, Ronnie Schoenfeldt and Ryan McDonald on his heels. Cervantes run up front ended on lap 2 when trouble forced him to pull off. Garner was quickly in slower traffic splitting Aaron Tipton and Darrel Jones three wide. McDonald was able to get past Kowalik in traffic for second. At the crossed flags it was Garner, McDonald, Kowalik, Adolph Tracy and Schoenfeldt in the top five. McDonald got under Garner and took the point on lap 12. Kowalik used traffic to pressure Garner for second as they diced three wide through slower cars. Garner ran McDonald back down with three to go and was looking low. The two were side by side for the lead as the flagman showed them two to go. McDonalds chance for a win ended on the white flag as he slowed allowing Garner(San Antonio) the uncontested run for the win in his VW Sirocco. “First loser,” joked Garner in regards to the points season. “We've had a pretty good season this year with three wins. We can't complain. All these young guys beating on me, that hurts.” “It's too bad Brandon(McCall) broke a CV joint, I think. I think we could have put on a show for the fans. Ryan(McDonald) kept me on my toes though, I can tell you that. He did a heck of a job. When he got by me I couldn't believe it. I just hung in there and finally got it back That lapped traffic was really hit or miss and hope you found the right line. “There wasn't a chance I'd go run that National points race. That's too far and this is a local group. Carwin, Coyne and Kyle Sargisson tangled in turns 1-2 for an early yellow. Stoy got by Paxson for second on the restart while Casey Smith did a 360 from fifth and fell back. The top three were nose to tail as they gapped the rest of the pack. Stoy got along side Stark for the lead and took over on lap 9. The top five at halfway were Stoy, Stark, Paxson, Cauy Moore and Smith rebounding from his spin. Stark and Paxson swapped second giving Stoy some breathing room. Bounty Hunting @ I-37 Speedway. 9-26-20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton, TX.,(Sept 26th, 2020) With only two more regular season points races left, it's time for drivers to get serious about their respective points races. All six regular classes were in action on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt track along with the Go-karts on the infield track. The IMCA Modified points didn't change since their feature race was canceled the last outing due to a big Factory Stock crash, and deteriorating track conditions from rain during the race week. Chris, Carroll, Rick Green, Robert Liese jr, Johnny Melancon and Ryan Doyon are the top five. In USRA Limited Modifieds, Johnny Torres could take a night and still hold the points lead over Ryan Doyon, Talon Minten, Sterling Tausch and Robby Minten. But a special bounty put on he and Steve Whiteaker jr. will keep Torres up on the wheel. The Late Models have Frank Okruhlik with a basically a race in hand on Landon Sowder, with Howie Marcx, Trey Votion and Aaron Driscoll in their own battle. USRA Factory Stocks saw some gains/losses after last races big crash. Josh Sewell avoided the melee while Mike Lyon jumped past Michael Keylich for the runner-up spot. Jesse Sandoval and Dustin Hurley round out the top five. The USRA Tuner class were also unable to run their feature on 9-12-20 so Brian Schoenbaum, Jamie Garner, Adam Tracy, Brandon McCall and Adolph Tracy held their spots. Gold for Green, Championship for Carroll The 20-lap IMCA Modified main got off to a rocky start with three cautions in the first two laps. At the start Johnny Melancon was first off turn 2 with the lead trailed by Rick Green, Marlin Samford, Landon Bednarz and Chandler Fox. After a couple fender-benders and an infield tire for cautions, Melencon had to pull off with suspension failure on the right rear. This gave the lead to Green with Talon Minten moving to second on the restart. Ryan Doyon wheel hopped Jared Maupin and found the front stretch wall for a lap 5 caution. Once back to racing, Green began pulling away to a half straightaway at the crossed flags with T. Minten, Logan Dinsmore, Robert Liese and Landon Bednarz in the top five. As T. Minten and L. Dinsmore swapped second, exchanging slide jobs at times, Green increased his margin. T. Minten finally secured second as the duo worked through traffic, but it was past track champion, Green taking the victory in his Green Construction, Chris Carroll Construction, Nate Mare Graphics, crate powered BMS by Carroll Chassis. “Nobody went to the outside on the start,” replied Green. “I was able to quickly move to up to third. I knew that I just needed a little clear track and it would be mine. The track was dry on the bottom and was tacky from about the middle up. I liked it. I like to air the car out. It was fun.” “I did absolutely nothing to the car between the heat and feature. After last races track conditions I was a little worried there might be some ruts come back because of the deep moisture. It was night and day difference tonight.” “The first laps I just hit my marks. Then I'd kick the car sideways in turn 2 to try to see where everybody was. I figured I had a pretty good lead when I could come out of turn 2 and see then just entering turn 1.” “It was our(mine and Chris Carroll) game plan from day one that I would help support him running for the championship. I did an awful of R&D work over the year. I was doing things to help myself, Chris and our team out. I found a couple little things. Tonight it was my set up 100%.” “With IMCA points ending this week it's our final points night and I'm worn out.” added champion Carroll. “I'm ready to go play somewhere else and do some big races. Points racing doesn't have the fun in it. You have to make sure you make it to the next race. If you wreck you don't get a chance to take a race off to get it fixed right. Then I built a new car mid-season.” “Rick and I started this season and I told him I was going run for the championship. He decided that he would back me and he never let off on me. At the end of the day he did a lot of R&D for us. We put stuff on his car and if it worked, we tried it on mine. He was a great team mate and we had a lot of fun and won a lot of races. As Maupin and Torres inched away, Whiteaker was pressuring Beddoe for third. After several tries Whiteaker finally got the spot. Behind them Anthony Gordon and Minten were swapping fifth when yellow waved for Jason Hubert stopped in the pit exit. On the restart Whiteaker got a good run past Torres and under Maupin briefly. At halfway it was Maupin, Whiteaker, Torres, Minten and Gordon. Whiteaker was now putting the heat on Maupin for the lead. Whiteaker dove low to get past Maupin, but a yellow for a spin by Gordon after contact with Edward Oakes erased the pass. Whiteaker and Torres stayed side by side on the restart with JJ Jennings getting by Beddoe for fourth. After Holding off Torres, Whiteaker was again Maupin for the lead. Whiteaker and Maupin were wheel to wheel on lap 14 with Whiteaker getting the pass off turn 2 on lap 15. This left Maupin battling with Torres for second who took the position on lap 16. As Whiteaker pulled ahead, Beddoe would loop it on lap 18 setting up a green, white, checkered finish. After a minor tangle between Jerry Evans and Johnny Johnson, the next caution saw Ramon Sevilla and Michael Keylich make hard contact with Kasey Krauss, Charles Earnhardt, Eric Ramos and Jerry Miller getting collected with minor damage. Third time wasn't any charm either as Ray Doyon spun and collected Michael Villareal. Finally to green flag racing the top three got away with Lyon and Wade Jones door to door for fourth and Robert Kelm beside Krauss for sixth. Sewell got some breathing room as Me. Villareal and Hurley swapped second. Jones and Lyon caught Me. Villareal going three wide for third. Me. Villareal kept the spot and was on Hurley again for second. Lopez ducked low off turn 4 to get out front on lap 3 while Hunter Peterson was working his way up to third. Lopez got loose in turn 1 giving Peterson a run to get the along side. Peterson got by Lopez for the lead, but spun in turn 2 on lap 6 giving the spot back to Lopez. Texas Dirt Truck Series, IMCA Fast Shafts Qualifier @ I-37 Speedway 8-29-20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton, TX.,(Aug 29th, 2020) Saturday night saw the return of the Texas Dirt Series to the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt oval near Pleasanton. This will mark the third visit for TDTS with Ryan Doyon pretty much dominating at this track with three wins. Tony Bernal and Russ Parker have also picked up victories other tracks. For the IMCA Modifieds it was a 2021 Fast Shafts All-Star qualifier paying off at $1,000 to win, plus a $100 hard charger award all courtesy of Sundowner Performance Diesel. Winning a Fast Shafts All-Star qualifier is an opportunity to run the Fast Shafts All-Star race during the IMCA Super Nationals held annually at Boone Speedway(Iowa). After last weeks double points race some drivers pulled ahead of the pack, while other lost positions. In IMCA Modifieds(regular points) the top five of Chris Carrroll, Rick Green, Robert Liese jr., Johnny Melancon and Ryan Doyon all held their spots. In USRA Limited Modifieds Johnny Torres increased his margin on Talon Minten and Ryan Doyon. Sterling Tausch lost ground after an on-track incident but maintained fourth over Robby Minten. Frank Okruhlik stretched his margin over Landon Sowder in Late Models winning last time out. Howie Marcx, Aaron Driscoll and Trey Votion hold the other spots in the top five USRA Factory Stocks saw the biggest shake up in points with Josh Sewell gaining points on Michael Keylich and Jesse Sandoval after both had tire issues in the feature two weeks ago. Mike Lyon jumped past Sandoval for third while Dustin Hurley cracked the top five. The USRA Tuner class the top five of Brian Schoenbaum, Adam Tracy, Jamie Garner, Brandon McCall and Adolph Tracy held their top five spots. Modified Money to Morris, After Tech It's been a long road to recovery this year for Chris Morris after additional back surgery sidelined the Taylor, Tx. driver following a great 2019 season in his hand controlled IMCA Modified. After the redraw it was Jared Maupin leading the 13-car field into turn 1 for their 20-lap A-main. Morris followed with Rick Green, Ryan Doyon and Logan Dinsmore lining up behind him. The field quickly strung out as the top was the dominant groove. L. Dinsmore pitted from fifth handing spot to Chris Swenson. Quickly at halfway, Maupin, Morris, Green, Doyon and Swenson still held the spots. Morris was able to close in on Maupin as the leaders hit traffic, but Maupin was able ease back out once clear. Doyon was able to get past Green for third leaving him wheel to wheel with Swenson for fourth. Once clear of traffic, Maupin was able inch ahead to take checkers. Robert Kelm broke and stopped to bring out a yellow. Under caution Torres was checked for leaking fuel and pulled off. This handed the lead over to Lyon for the lap 4 restart. Saunders and Sandoval stayed side by side for second until Sandoval got the spot leaving Gordon, Jarrett Payton and Saunders were three wide for third. Michael Keylich joined that scrap going four wide. As that fight sorted out, Cameron Dinsmore, using the top, got by Saunders and Gordon. A Jerry Miller spin slowed the action. Lyon, the leader, was called for jumping the restart between the cones and as yellow came out Gordon and Sandoval got stacked up sending both to the hot pits with flats. As time constraints closed in the race was cut to 15-laps with Payton now out front on the restart. On the start, Grimes got off turn 2 with the lead trailed by Ryan Doyon, Tony Bernal, Russ Parker and Johnny Brown. On a restart Doyon challenged for the lead, but Grimes held him off. I-37 Speedway, 8-1-20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton, TX (Aug. 1, 2020) - After a little time off in the schedule, I-37 Speedway was back in action Saturday night on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt oval near San Antonio. All five of the regular classes(IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, USRA Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Tuners, plus three divisions of Go-Karts). August is not only the heat of the summer, but the meat of I-37 Speedways schedule with three events slated for the month(Aug. 15Th, Aug. 29th). Double track points are up for grabs on the August 15th date and the Texas Dirt Truck Series returns on the 29th. Carroll Collects Modified Cash Nearly a full field took the green for the scheduled 20-lap IMCA Modified main with Greg Dinsmore getting to turn 1 first trailed by Robert Liese jr., AJ Wernette, Donald Banker and Chandler Fox sorting out. Behind them Logan Dinsmore, Ryan Doyon and Robby Minten were three wide for sixth. After a couple cautions, Chris Carroll was on the move getting by Wernette for third and swapping second with Liese. Carroll finally secured the spot while Landon Bednarz and Banker ran side by side for fourth. Joshua Melancon expired a motor for another yellow that had officials cut the distance to 15 laps. Carroll got along side G. Dinsmore on the restart and took the point with Cody Tidwell, Chris Swenson and Dillon Tindall three wide for sixth. Whiteaker was able to get by Torres to lead lap 2 when Johnathon Garcia got into the front stretch wall. The restart saw Rye have issues, stop and pit from third. The next restart wasn't much better as Kevin Parker slapped the wall. Finally back to green with Torres giving Whiteaker a look low in turns 1-2. They ran wheel to wheel in the corner but Whiteaker held the advantage. At the crossed flags it was Whiteaker and Torres with a big gap to R. Minten, T. Minten and Chris Swenson. Torres was keeping the pressure on Whiteaker giving looks low in turns 1-2, but Whiteaker held serve and was better in turns 3-4. Whiteaker was able to inch ahead a bit until a debris caution rebunched the field on lap 17. Kody Hardagee joined the top five getting by Marcx. Brzozowski was able to grab second from Votion with Okruhlik following through to third. Brzozowski ducked under Fox for the lead on lap 6. Fox would spin and collect Hardage. Once back to green coming to halfway it was Brzozowski, Okruhlik, Hardage, Campbell and Votion in the top five. Brzozowski got slowed by side by side traffic allowing Okruhlik to close the gap, while Marcus Mikulencak was on the charge getting by Campbell and Votion for fourth. Leddy fought back going door to door with Villareal on lap 2, getting by on lap 3. After a yellow the scrap for the lead continued while GW Hessong was charging forward getting Payton for fourth, then Sandoval for third. Josh Sewell took fifth from Payton as Jerry Evans and John Drexler tangled in turn 1 for a yellow. On the restart Payton retook the spot from Sewell as Hessongs charge ended, pulling to the infield. At the halfway point it was Villareal, Leddy, Payton, Sewell and Leita in the top five. Leddy got a couple car lengths on Villareal with two to go. On the final lap Villareal tried a dive bomb move in turn 3 for the win, but door slammed Leddy hard enough to get Leddys front wheels off the ground. Villareal went on to cross the line first, while Leddy sat dead in the water, in turn 4. After some discussion among officials, Villareal was disqualified for rough driving with the victory awarded to Payton, in the self-financed, GM crate powered Outlaw Chassis, his first win since his last checkers eight years ago. “It's been since 2012 since I spoke you last,” exclaimed Payton. “I wasn't expecting this. On the last lap I saw the 30 car(Villareal) get under Aaron(Leddy) and I back off a little bit thinking something might happen. I wasn't expecting the win though. I just have to take care of the tires and do maintenance on it. It's fast. This is the nicest racecar I've ever driven in my life. Summer Showdown Night #2 @ I-37 Raceway, 7/17-18/20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton, Texas (July 18, 2020) - After a Friday night of racing the Summer Showdown concluded on Saturday night on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt track. Friday night had four drivers qualified for bonus money for sweeping the weekend, Chris Morris (IMCA Modified), Steve Whiteaker Jr. (USRA Limited Modified), Josh Sewell (USRA Factory Stock) after a DQ in tech and Adam Tracy (USRA Tuners). Morris and Whiteaker opted to not return. The POWERi Racing, Lonestar 600s were also on the card with the 600 Winged Restrictors and Non-Wing Micros. Mother Nature was nice for this years scheduled race after 3 of the last 4 appearances have ended in rain outs. Dinsmore Dynamic in IMCA Modifieds The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature saw 14-cars take the green with Greg Dinsmore getting to turn 1 first trailed by Ryan Doyon, AJ Wernette, Talon Minten and Johnny Melancon along side Logan Dinsmore. Wernette looped it from third in turn 2 on lap 1 with no one making contact as the pack scattered. On the restart Minten, using the top, got by Doyon for second. Chris Jones found the front stretch wall on lap 3 bringing out another quick yellow. Once back to green, Doyon used a low line move to get second back from Minten, but Minten powered around the top to regain the spot and close on G. Dinsmore. Minten showed him the nose once with G. Dinsmore adjusting his line to a middle groove and was able to hold the top spot. In the meantime, Chris Carroll was working his way up getting by L. Dinsmore for fourth. Coming to halfway G. Dinsmore got a little breathing room as Doyon and Minten ran wheel to wheel for second. At halfway it was G. Dinsmore, Doyon, Minten, Carroll and L. Dinsmore holding off Rick Green. Carroll caught the Doyon-Minten battle for second and was able to take third. Up front G. Dinsmore was running up on traffic giving Doyon the chance to close a 6-car advantage in the closing laps. G. Dinsmore (Kerrville), a former track champion, was able to get through traffic and keep Doyon at bay taking the win in his Sundowner Performance Diesel, Jimmys Towing, AFCO, Sanderson Motorsports, Wehrs, Stealth, Swenson Racing Products, Friesen crate powered, BMS Chassis. Well, to quote Yogi Berra, “It was deja vu all over again.” As the 22-car field took the green it was Sewell getting out front with Jarrett Payton, George Quintanilla, Michael Keylich and Allen Torres(who was first to cross the line Friday night). Torres quickly worked his past M. Keylich using the top on lap 1. Staying on the high side, Torres powered past Quintanilla and Payton on lap 2 and crossed the line side by side with Sewell getting the top spot on lap 3. On a lap 4 restart, Payton tried to dive under Torres and Sewell for the lead, but fell back in line third. Sewell then gave Torres a look on the bottom, but Torres with momentum up top held the spot. In the pack, Dustin Hurley, Mike Lyon and Jesse Sandoval were three wide for sixth. As the top three eased away, Lyon got by Quintanilla for fifth. At the midway point it was Torres, Sewell, Payton, M. Keylich with Lyon and Cameron Dinsmore side by side for fifth when a spin by Elgin Tracy slowed the action. Payton again tried his dive low move as green waved, but fell short, while Lyon took fourth from M. Keylich. Sewell was again putting pressure on Torres for the lead when Dakota Hurley spun for a yellow. This time when Payton tried the low line move, he spun in front of the field scattering the pack. Dash for Cash, North vs South Shootout @ I-37 Speedway 6/6/20 By JM Hallas Pleasnaton TX.,(June 6th, 2020) After a two week scheduled hiatus, I-37 Speedway was back on track this Saturday with all five of the regular classes returning to action(IMCA Modifieds, USRA Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Tuners, Late Models) on the ¼ mile semi-banked ¼ mile dirt oval. Extra cash was up for grabs in two classes with the USRA Limited Modifieds running a 'Dash for Cash' winner-take-all shootout for $150 among the top six qualified cars. In the USRA Tuner class it was 'North vs South' battle for the state honors with an increased purse and commemorative belt buckle awaiting the winner. Over 25 cars showed up from around the state vying for the title of top tuner. Carroll Comes Back for Modified Cash The two week break in racing was a blessing for Chris Carroll(Spring Branch) whose car suffered significant damage in the last outing. Carroll started in row 4 and caught then leader, Rick Green in traffic to get by. In the latter stages Carroll had to fend off rookie Logan Dinsmore, fresh off his high school graduation. As the 12-car IMCA Modified feature fired off it was Ryan Doyon out first. After some contact between Chandler Fox and Johnny Melancon, Landon Bednarz moved to second followed by Rick Green, Robert Liese and Carroll. Marlin Samford and Fox made contact on lap 2 for an early caution. On the restart Green and Carroll both got past Bednarz for second and third while Dinsmore got by Liese for fifth. Green then began to pressure Doyon for the lead getting along side and by coming to halfway showing Green, Doyon, Carrroll, Bednarz and Dinsmore in the tip five. Carroll was able to take second from Doyon as Dinsmore went side by side with Bednarz for fourth. The lead duo caught lapped traffic and Green picked the wrong lane and got hung behind two slower cars giving Carroll the chance to drive around the top for the lead on lap 15. Green, Fox and Rick Talley tangled in turn 3 for a yellow that sent Green to the rear. Back to green with Carroll on point, Dinsmore got past Doyon for second and gave Carroll a look on the outside. Dinsmore got run up into the fluff when Carroll looked to over drive turn 1 and lost a little ground. In turn 4 Dinsmore looped it, collecting Green, Melancon, Liese and Donald Banker bringing out a red. All drivers were alright after some hard hits, cars not so much. When racing resumed it was Carroll jumping out quickly with Bednarz and Jamie Campbell batting for third. Campbell got the spot and was looking low on Doyon for second. Torres was up top looking to get by his brother driving around him for the top spot on lap 3. Sherrill Lewis and Tom Grothues made contact on lap 4 for a caution that saw Doyon, T. Minten and Swenson three wide for third on the restart. After Swenson slid too high and fell back, T. Minten and Doyon stayed side by side for third. A. On the next try, former track champ Trey Votion got a run on Brzozowski down the back stretch, but it was Brzozowski back up front on lap 1 with Votion, Okruhlik, Landon Sowder and Kelly back to fifth. Brzozowski was able to pull away until Sowder went around for a lap 5 yellow. Brzozowski was able to get away clean as the two 99's, of Votion and Okruhlik, battled for second. At halfway it was Brzozowski pulling away, with Okruhlik, Votion, Kelly and Howie Marcx filling out the top five. As Okruhlik and Votion continued their scrap for second, Brzozowski motored away. The red was out quickly on lap 1 when K. Keylich tagged the front stretch wall and got drilled by Robert Keylich. On the restart Da. Hurley tried to dive under Torres, but gave second back up to Sewell. A lap later Da. Hurley would spin in turn 1 and collect Quintanilla. Back to green Torres got out with Michael Keylich and Sewell side by side for second while Preston and R. Lyon were door to door for fourth. Lap 8 saw Kasey Krauss loop it in turn 2 setting up a series of yellows/restarts that saw Tommy Grimes go off the turn 3 hill, then get tangled with Scott Jerkins on the ensuing restart. Brian Schoenbaum quickly joined the fight getting past Borlace for fifth then Kowalik for fourth. The third red of the night was waved on lap 6 when Michael Burris jr and Adam Tracy made contact with Ada. Tracy flipping hard on the front stretch. Just as the green came back out, yellow came on after a drone crashed landed on the front stretch,(a first for me), and was run over. Sadly, the drone didn't survive the incident. Once back to racing, the outside lane was slow taking off stacking up the row, shuffling positions moving Johnny Ervin up to fourth. Ervin and Brandon McCall made contact sending McCall into Schoenbaum who was forced through infield giving up more spots. At the mid point it was Newberry, Cates, McCall, Ervin and Mooney in the top five. Yellow waved on lap 11 when defending track champ Jamie Garner broke and stopped in turn 3. On the restart Newberry and Cates got away while Ervin and McCall battled for third. Schoenbaum had just taken fifth from Mooney when Johnathon Cervantes went off the turn 2 hill. On the single file restart, Ervin slipped in turns 3-4 with Mooney and Schoenbaum getting by. The final caution waved on lap 17 when Borlace lost the right front and stopped in turn 4 on the edge of the track. On the shootout to the finish, Schoenbaum got by McCall and was side by side with Cates for second. This gave Newberry some breathing room on his way to win in the Love Field Auto, KYB, Excel Parts, Chevy Cobalt. “This track is real similar to Big O Speedway,” commented Newberry. “We just ran what we normally run. It's pretty close on the set up. You always try to go out with a plan to save a little for the end. Then there's fast guys behind you that are going to be pushing you. I just try to get around the lapped cars as clean as possible. Doesn't always work.” “You always wonder if someone is finding as faster line. At one point I looked down and saw the nose inside. I thought I'd better stay on the bottom. The top wasn't working as good as I thought it would. Knock the Dust Off Bracket Race @ Alamo City Motorplex, 3/14/20 By JM Hallas Marion, TX.,(March 14th, 2020) With nearly every other thing in the state postponed or canceled, Alamo City Motorplex held a 'Knock the Dust Off' bracket race on the 1/8 mile speed plant, just outside San Antonio. As the regular points season is scheduled to begin on March 28th, the show gave drivers a final chance to shake down their cars. It also attracted several racers from the Houston area giving them the opportunity to race. It was nearly an ideal day weather-wise with temperatures in the mid 80's and a track surface that was nearly perfect. I can't recall seeing so many drivers hit their numbers, just still end up on the losing end a race. It all came down to the crucial starting line advantage. Besides the NHRA Super Pro, Pro and JR. Dragster, a street class and motorcycle class was added to the racing card. With a good number of Super Pro cars on hand a Quick 16 Shootout was included. Wilson Wins Super Pro It was a given that the money up for grabs in the Super Pro finals would be going back east to the Houston area with Kevin Wilson(Magnolia) and Bart Nelson(LaPorte) going at it in the finals. Wilson, in his K2 Motorsports, 2020 Miller Chassis picked up the inaugural victory for his new car, getting a break at the start when Nelson, in his 2015 American Chassis went .006(6/1,000th) red. Whether or not Wilson pressed his luck at the stripe was moot, barely going under his index. Kevin Wilson(4.76) 4.756 @ 144.97 defeats Bart Nelson(4.74) 5.606 @ 85.11(red light) Wilson got to the finals taking out Kip Sharf in the semis, M. Collier, Kendal Little, Gabriel Hernandez, and Gilbert Sanchez. Nelson had a semi round bye, and bested Jarod Wilson, Jay Fitzgerald, Greg Meuth and C. Bamilleaux. Robinson/Ball Split Quick It came down to two friends and semi-sort of teammates in the Quick 16 Shootout. Scott Ball(San Antonio) in his Scott Ball Racing, 2014 TNT Chassis was slated to go against Todd Robinson(Corpus Christi) in his Rehrer-Morrison powered 2019 Elite Chassis, both opted to split the money and save equipment. Ball took out Gilbert Sanchez, C. Bamilleaux and K. Whitaker while Robinson knocked out Kevin Wilson, looking to double up, Leroy O.Bryant and Mike Atkinson Herbold Hustles to Pro Pay Day Former track champ Cole Herbold(Seguin) in his Herbold Brothers Drilling, shorty Dragster chopped the tree down on Gabriel Hernandez(San Antonio) in his FTP 68 Camaro to take home the win in Pro. Herbold used a blistering .004 light to run down Hernandez then still stay within his number. Cole Herbold(5.09) 5.119 @ 129.24 defeats Gabriel Hernandez(7.36) 7.41 @ 90.16 Herbold trailered L. Hobbs, Vince Hernandez, Lee Miller and R.Taylor with a bye in the semis. Hernadez ousted K. Harlan, D. Koepsel, Gene Herbold, a round 4 bye, and caught a huge break when Jamie Longoria went .0007(7/10,000th) red in the semis(Ouch!). Farris Finds Fast Lane Dwayne Farris(Round Rock) in his 2016 Mustang GT was squared off with announcer John Villanueva(San Antonio) in his 2020 Ford Fusion in the street class finals. Villanueva cut a better light, but took too much of the stripe and broke out giving the win to D. Farris. Baugh Bags Bike Bucks Casey Baugh(West) took home the motorcycle money with the win over James Marlett(Austin) Marlett on his 2008 Kawasaki went red at the line handing the win over to Baugh on his Baughs Out Racing, 2004 Hayabusa GSXR. Casey Baugh(6.26) 6.253 @ 111.88 defeats James Marlett(5.64) 5.654 @ 121.75(red light) Baugh got a round 1 bye then beat W. Keele and T. Thomas. Marlett rebought after a round 1 loss to D. Hrometz, then avenged the loss to Hrometz in round 2 and got a bye in the semis. Rufenaeht Races to Jr Dragster Dough. It was two young heavyweights, figuratively speaking, in the Jr. Dragster finals with Graeme Rufenacht in the McGee Cams, Brando Custom Paint, Sock Posse Racing, Halfscale Jr Dragster going head to head with Cody Garceau in his Terminator powered 2004 Hardens. Rufenacht cut a .020 light and needed every bit of that as he edged out Garceau at the stripe by .0023.(Yikes) Graeme Rufenacht(7.90) 7.945 @ 80.20 defeats Cody Garceau(7.90) 7.902 @ 80.96 Rufenacht bested H. Season Opener, $1,000 to win IMCA Modifieds/Fast Shafts Qualifier/Fan Appreciation Concert @ I-37 Speedway, 3/7/20 By JM Hallas Pleasanton TX.,(March 7th, 2020) It was a full night of entertainment as I-37 Speedway kicked off its 2020 regular points season on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, dirt oval just south of San Antonio, Saturday night. After a successful special Friday night USMTS show last week, it was time for the regular classes and points season to kick off. Classes include the Simpson Safety Products IMCA Modifieds, Swenson Racing Products USRA Limited Modifieds, Nogalitos Gear Late Models, All In Designs USRA Factory Stocks, Brown Chevrolet USRA Tuners and Russ Parker Construction Go-Karts. The IMCA Modifieds vied for $1,000 to win plus the opportunity to be placed on the Fast Shafts, All-Star Invitational ballot as well as national, regional and state points. The three USRA classes(Limited Modifieds, Factory Stocks, Tuners) would also be competing for their own national points. As if a full night of racing wasn't already enough, it was a fan appreciation night with a post-race concert by Shawn Hart sponsored by Carroll Construction. Carroll Claims Cash Chris Carroll(Spring Branch) took home the $1,000 win in the IMCA Modified 20-lapper against some stiff competition. As green waved on the 15-car field it was three wide into turn 1 with Rick Green, Jamie Campbell and Nebraska's, Chad Anderson. Anderson, who makes occasion trips to Texas and I-37 Speedway from Fort Calhoun got the point. Behind Anderson Green, Dillon Tindall, Campbell and Don Banker sorted out. Carroll, coming from row three, quickly moved up past Campbell and Banker for fourth bringing Cody Tidwell along to fifth. Green was starting to take peeks low on Anderson when a spin by Johnny Melancon slowed the pace. On the restart Carroll and Green were side by for second with Tidwell and Tindall wheel to wheel for fourth. After clearing Green, Carroll ran down Anderson for the lead with the two side by side on lap 8 and Carroll getting the top spot a lap later. At the crossed flags it was Carroll, Anderson, Tidwell, Tindall and Green. After a couple quick yellows, Tidwell was along side Anderson for second while Jared Maupin was moving up getting by Tindall for fourth. As Carroll inched ahead, Anderson was pressuring Tidwell for second while Green and Tindall scrapped for fifth. As the white flag waved Carroll had a five car length advantage on Tidwell and scored the win in his Carroll Construction, Green Construction, Shawn Hart Music, crate powered GRT by Carroll Chassis. “I didn't think I was going to be able to get him(Chad Anderson),” commented Carroll. “He started getting a little tight in the middle and I saw where I could take advantage of that. I got lucky, really. They made a bad call on a restart putting me ahead of (Dillon) Tindall. That gave me a spot up to third. So I want to apologize to him, first and foremost.” “I watched Chad race a little bit and we raced with him last year. He's a pretty good guy and definitely gave me room. Once I got under him I got tight too and pushed both of us out to the wall. He gave me room, didn't cut back down on me and I had room to gather it back up. The rest is history. I got out front and thankfully it wasn't a longer race. I was tired, I'm getting too old.” “There was a little home track advantage in there. I kept it where I needed to keep it at, I could hear them back there. At the start it was Marcus Mikulencak leading the way into turn 1, but it was Maupin powering off turn 2 with lead. Following Maupin were Mikulencak, Rowdy Flanagan, Ryan Doyon and Johnny Torres. Doyon was able to snag third as the top three pulled ahead by lap 5. Shawn Obannon spun in front of the leaders on lap 8 setting up a series of restarts that saw Maupin, Mikulencak and Doyon almost three wide at one point. At halfway it was Maupin, Mikulencak, Doyon, Talon Minten and Torres in the top 5. After a stoppage for Austin Majek finding the front stretch wall it was three wide again up front with Maupin holding the spot. Mikulencak was giving Maupin a look low when Sterling Tausch looped it and had Cheryl Gray launch over the hood to bring out a yellow. Once back to green, Mikulencak again was looking low on Maupin while T. Minten and Torres ran wheel to wheel for third. Mikulencak, Torres and T. Minten then began their own little battle giving Maupin some breathing room in the final laps. We've got this car rolling pretty good and I'm pretty confident each time we hit the track.” “It's kind of like which one of us gets out front first. He(Marcus) said if you get out there I don't know if I can get past you. He started trying to throw some sliders. The good thing is I know I can trust him. He's not going to be real dirty and door me. Once I got out front I knew it was going to be tough to pass me on the bottom. After the first green stretch I was looking to my guys in the stands and they said I had a big gap. I was just trying to hit my marks over and over again. He's kind of stopped, loosened up a bit and lets me do my own thing.” “Switching cars absolutely was a challenge. Those first five laps in the Modified I didn't know what I was doing. Everything happens faster, the car is more sideways, the tires don't hook up as good and everyone is faster. Okruhlik powered out front on lap 1 chased by Trey Votion, Jacob Crow, Aaron Leddy and Landon Sowder. Multiple spins on each end brought out the only caution in the 15-lapper. Once back to green, Okruhlik got out with Votion and Leddy battling for second. From there, no one saw anything but the spoiler of Okruhlik's car as he pulled out to half track lead and easily cruised to the checkers in the Billy Bobs Tire & Repair, United Rentals, Rising Star Bodies, All in Designs, 3-D Landscaping, MB Custom Shocks, Swenson Racing Components, crate powered Warrior Chassis. “It was good for the first time out in the car,” explained Okruhlik. “Could be some improvement. It felt good. It doesn't mean it can't go faster. We just finished this car today. The first time I sat in it was the heat race. I just got lucky, I guess. I guess we're getting good at fast cars out of the shop.” “I really didn't know how big of a lead I had. I can usually look and see cars, but I couldn't see any so I thought they were pretty close. With the crate motor, to me, it's slow. The Limited Late Models still have some big motors and I figured they'd be right there. I was probably running harder than I needed to.” “We're trying to evolve this class a little. This is a step towards it. Somebody has to take the reins and be that guy to make the leap. I guess I'm that guy. This is full blown Late Model with a 602 crate. There's a lot of suspension compared to a Limited Late Model. I pretty much have a baseline with all the cars and classes I've run here. It can get better. That was just right out of the shop. As green flew on the 21-car field it was Jesse Sandoval first to turn 1 trailed by Tryton Temple, Allen Torres, Josh Sewell, Dakota Hurley with Aaron Leddy and Kyle Kirkland side by side for sixth. Temple quickly began challenging Sandoval getting by in turns 1-2 to lead lead lap 3. Sewell, using the high side, got by Sandoval, but got hung in traffic giving up spots to Sandoval, Torres and Hurley. Hurleys top run ended on lap 8 when he looped it battling with Torres. His luck got even worse when he was caught up as Johnny Johnson found the front stretch wall. As racing resumed coming to halfway it was Temple, Torres, Sandoval, Sewell and M. Keylich. After a spin by Zylar Bryant, M. Keylich took fourth from Sandoval and caught Sewell for third. Sewell and M. Keylich both got past Torres. With Temple easing ahead, M. Keylich, Sewell and Torres had good scrap going until Torres pulled off. A late caution changed the complexion with the field rebunched on lap 17, for a three lap shootout. As green waved M. Keylich tried the topside on Temple for the lead in turns 1-2. M. Keylich led lap 18 with Temple trying to fight back on the bottom. M. Keylich held his ground in the Keylich Electric, CPU Computer Repair, Double K Landscaping, Keylich Auto Repair, Jenn's Liquor, Differentials by Dale, All in Designs, Mission Race Engine powered Destroyer Chassis. “It feels real good(to get the first win),” replied Keylich. “When I came to this track four years ago I never thought I'd get this far. I do this to have fun. If I win, I win, if I lose, I lose. Winning was a bonus tonight. I usually don't drive that good. It was awesome battling with Tryton(Temple) for the lead. Luckily I edged him out. The kid is good. I wish I was as good as he is.” “This class is easier for me to drive just because I had never raced on dirt before. The Sport Mod was a lot lighter, a lot harder to drive. With these cars you can drive them in there, get a little out of shape and come out alright.” “We're going to try to do some big shows with this car, the Factory 50, the TMS Championship deal and hit some others, do some traveling. Adam Tracy jumped out front early trailed by defending champ Jamie Garner, Schoenbaum, Brandon McCall and Michael Burris sr. After a brief battle with Garner for second, Schoenbaum got inside A. Tracy for the lead on lap 7. At halfway it was Schoenbaum, Garner, A. Tracy, McCall and Burris sr. in the top five. Garner was applying the pressure on Schoenbaum for the lead as the top three edged away with Michael Burris jr. getting by his dad for fifth. Garner and Schoenbaum were side by side at the line for the lead on lap 15. Behind the lead battle A. Tracy slapped the turn 4 wall, ricocheted back across the track and got submarined by Burris jr. sending the car on its side before landing back upright. Burris sr. also got caught up with others squeezing through the near totally blocked track. Luckily everyone was alright. After the red flag, it was Schoenbaum getting away while Garner and McCall ran door to door. Garner cleared McCall and tried to close, but never got back close enough as Schoenbaum in the Big A's BBQ, Bonham Recovery, Tracys Oil & Gas, Central Cedar, KR Promotions, Rabid Motorsports, five1seven Designs, Twisted iPhones, Superior Steering Wheels, IHFP Clothing, Chevy Cavalier took the checkers. “The competition has really stepped up since last year,” said Schoenbaum. “Not only down here, but all over Texas. These guys are getting quicker and quicker. I could hear him(Jamie Garner) back there. I was protecting the bottom and he got a good run off turn 4 and we made a little contact. I wanted to push him up a bit, but went too high. So, it was an apology in tech thing and he was cool with it.” “It was a fun race. Coming up from the outside of the second row you probably could have thrown a blanket over the top four of us at one point. It was a good battle. I had a blast. It's been a while since the last time I won. The end of last season I had some issues with the car.
