  1. Yes, and "Shoot lower Sheriff they are riding Shetlens. when a car back fired.
  2. RETrott and TommyO, The cars were limited to 260 C.I.. We used 250 inch chevys bored 60 over and they came out to about 256 C. I.'s. In 1975/76 we were allowed to run 60 series tires. Then in 77 they went to 70 series I believe to help reduce cost more. Of course as racers we would have loved to run small V-8's but then the cost would have gone up. On a side note I finally found the few pictures from Playland Park that dad had. I'll try to get them posted on the Playland thread as soon as time allows. Darrell
  3. Okay guys for what my memory is worth, I remember one of the best nights of racing I remembered at Meyer was the night that Allison, Trickle and maybe one other Nascar driver was in town for a race at TWS. They raced Meyer Saturday night and TWS on Sunday. Honestly I don't remember who won but I do remember that Trickles race car and hauler were involved in an accident on the way to Texas. He showed up at Meyer without a ride and Fryer offer him a ride in either of 2 of his cars he brought to town. One was a 69 Chevelle he ran on a weekly basis at Meyer and the other car was what Fryer called his "Super Cheater Car". It was 65/66 Nova that was suppose to be super light weight at 2600 lbs? I think. Trickle picked the Chevelle and Fryer ran the Nova, and now that I think about it I'm pretty sure Trickle won the feature that nite. But then again it was a long time ago.
  4. Yes, my brother Dale and Don both raced. Dale was number 52 and Don was number 56. I'll post a few pictures of them too. I also have a few from Shrevsport when we ran the support show for the late models. Great times and great memories. Wish I could do it again.
  5. I'm going to give this a shot and post a few picks..I hope. This is from 1976. Darrell
  6. Right you are sir! I did a lot of research on this car It has an interesting history I have an information sheet and a bunch more pictures if anyone is interested. Thanks for looking! Mr427 Great looking models. I built model cars from age 11 and still have a closet full. I haven't built any in many years but I still keep up with the hobby. I don't know if you've seen Mr. Nascars Neighborhood at www.ovaltrackmodels.com but there are tons of great looking models there. Also there are several web sites for decal makers. I believe if you can send them pictures of the car you are building they will make the decals for you in any scale. The're not exactly cheap but they sure make a difference in the model you're building. Darrell Koebelen - Meyer Speedway 1976-1979 bronco number 54.
  7. Yes I remember that night and it was an awful crash. I also seem to remember the driver died a few days later from his injuries but I could be wrong. It was a long time ago and like so many others I've slept since then. D
  8. Larry, It's funny that we were not at the track the night M.J. and Ronnie went over the wall. We were on vacation. And I thought it was the first turn also. And like you I never saw any pictures either. Darrell
  9. Morning All, Larry is right. That was the day of the ARCA race and they would let the modifieds come in for a shake down of sorts before the season started. I belive the throttle stuck and that is what sent Bob over the wall. It's was a real shame as that was a brand new mod. I still have that picture somewhere I cut out of the newspaper the following Monday morning. Does anyone remember or have pictures of Charlie Kettles "new" ride he brought out one year for the shake down run. I remember him coming down the front stretch wide open and throttle sticking. He went into the wall with the thing still wide open, spun down between one and two into the infield and the motor ran wide open till it blew!! When he hit the wall the body allmost flew off the car. My dad said it was just wired down and he said the roll cage was made out of water pipe. Amazing he wasn't killed. Darrell
  10. Buddy, I was at the race at TWS the day Louis died, along with a family friend Joe Foster. Although I never met Louis, Joe did know him and said he was a really nice guy. As far as the accident I was in the pits that day and if I recall Louis either lost control on the back strech or maybe got tangled with another car. Anyway his car spun up the 3rd turn banking and was struck in the passenger side of the car by if I remember a 71 or 72 model Ford Torino or Mercury at about 170 mph. Unfortunately Louis never had a chance. I remember when they brough his car into the pits. Larry was right about the structural integrity. The big Ford hit squarely between the front and rear wheels. It pushed the side of the car in all the way to the drivers seat. The only thing I seem to remember the car being a 69 Camero not 71 but it was a long time ago and I have slept since then and maybe forgot. I also remember looking at the Ford in the pits when they brought it in and the damage to the front end was almost minimal compared to the Camaro. Anyway I wish I could have met Louis, he sounded like a really nice guy. Darrell Koebelen
  11. Mark, Thanks for the info. I probably have a couple of hundred slids. Of course most are of my brothers and I. But I do have a few of the Houston late models. The last time I pulled them out to look at them the images still looked pretty good. I'll get them out and go through them this weekend. Maybe even take a few to Walgreens and get them put to CD to see how they come out. If they look good I may go ahead and get them all done. Again thanks for the info guys. Darrell
  12. I'm re-replying because it looks like I may not have done something right last time I posted. Does anyone know of any videos or pictures of the bronco's from the 70's? Camaro's, Mustang's, Nova's, etc. My brother's and I all drove Camaro's. I'll try to see if I can get my scanner going and download the few pictures I have. I do have quite a few pictures on 35mm slides. Does anyone know of any software I can use to enlarge these. I also have a number of pic's from the 2 weekends we raced at Shrevespot at the State Fair. The bronco's were the support show for the late model races in 77. Terry Labonte won that one. Thanks, Darrell
  13. I'm not sure if this relates to the 60's much. But when I raced bronco's in the mid to late 70's we ran a 250 c.i. chevy with a 5.38 gear. I ran a 3 speed so I ran high gear. But my brother Dale with the same motor and gear ran a 4 speed but raced in 3rd gear. I can only remember having to qualify twice in the 3 years I raced. The last time I qualified I turned a 26.41 and Judsen Massingil(sp) turned a 25.98. I don't know what that equates to mph wise probably some where between 75 to 80? Darrell
  14. Hey Larry, Could the 84 be Roy Tulley? I seem to also remember him driving a #24 that he stuck and destroyed on the inside gaurd rail step thru from the track to the pits one night. I use to have a picture of it but Don Anderson borrowed them and hasn't been able to get them back to us. When I get them back I'll post them. Darrell
