Mike, I'm not planning on checking out any time soon, of course my wife might have something to say about that lol.. But hey, I'm 67, and have had 25 surgeries between March 2008 and Jan 2021. Both my parents died at age 71, so maybe my time is getting close too.

I always used to think that all of the fighting, and shit like that was because everyone was so competitive. I've come to believe that almost all of it was simply hard headedness. Once we get past that, it's funny how much we have in common. Then comes respect for each other, then friendship. I sure wish I'd been smart enough to realize that a bit sooner.

I haven't known Nick anywhere near as long as you have Mike, but I've always respected him. He always played things straight, and by the book. When I was helping Greg Baber with his modified, he hired Nick for his expertise on chassis setup. I'd like to think that I learned a lot from him, but he didn't have a great student. Geometry was never my best course in school. But he still took his time explaining why he wanted adjustments etc, and never got frustrated. I also took his classes, and he showed patience there too. Again, I really respect that.

we have to be careful with  with talking to much good about nick .. swollen  head at his age  is dangerous . //

  3.  I AM 68 NOW  and 15 1971  SO  i am going off an old memory i may have spoke about somewhere  on speedzone

.i saw where bob sr spole about this once but  didnt finish  with all the truth . .. a man if i remerber  correctly  named mike  put up the money  to have  terrys  motor  checked. i was told by frank  to stand watch  for some reason while   the left head was removed . i dint know what = i was suppose to see . but i acted it out well i stayed out of the way . sorta looked the part  standing next to dub rollins car .  . some guys i wont name or could all of them started laying big money on the dash  of the car betting  he was or was not legal .. frank saw that and made them  pick the money up  the words he said i wont repeat .. frank  told us including me to push the car out under walters little light bulb on the flagstand . then everyone  except terry me kim  bob  walter and one other  were the only ones who can stay  .. the man  who put up the money  for tear down walks out  looks at  the cylinder number two  and said sure dont look like a 283 to me ..  . not a good ideal  . terry pushed the man  forward  bob took him by the arm  and then his head and shoved his face  as far as he could  and said now does that look like a 283  .yep he said with a ring  around  his face  funny as heck  . the motor was legal  30 over  where they could have gone 60 by rule

the thing was   tech picked the side they wanted ..  i believe back them some teams would over bore  one or two  cylinders  if not one side larger than the other side..  i suppose  to get more   hp .. ..the face in the cylinder part or how  it went down  was not mentioned in the story ..

Nick, I was sure that you would know more than I do about Bob, and you did. All I ever heard was third party stuff. I too was glad to hear Mike with some personal info. I had always heard the Bob could be a little rough around the edges, but was a good guy. I never went to CC, going to SA on a GI's pay was about all I could afford then, while living in Del Rio. I was glad that he was able to get Terry & Bobby to Cup. I know that have been other Texans to make it, but none had the impact that Terry & Bobby had. I don't think I ever heard Ken Squire say Terry Labonte. It was always "Texas" Terry Labonte. Like you Nick, I was born somewhere else. But TX is my adopted home. God willing, this is where I'll die too.

dont die to soon ron .. .  in those days at cc   it was a tough bunch i saw some nasty take outs  on the track  in the pits tire iron jacks and what ever .. but over all  fun .. WHAT WAS IT BOB SAID TO RICK / did i ever thank u  rick for all of this .i bet rick was honored ..sorta funny how they became such good friends . sorta like  i didnt like nick  at first till  later  on ..not a surprise for nick i know .. i have alot of respect  for nick now . we have had some  good talks . you find folks are not what  u think they are   on social media ..

  6.  SAD  . I LAST TALKED to bob and martha after terry won his second champiomship   the day after  . BOB SAID HIS  head was so big he had a hard time getting through the doors ..  remember bobby won the race ..  bob and i were standing  next to each other at cc speedway when terry came down for the rick baldwin race .. . we had been chewing  the fat  about the old days  when i asked  how did u make that 57 so fast .. / a dumb quetion  i suppose .he said  lol handleing  he did things to that car that no one else  had been doing .. .. .  HE was never rude to me . steven and i sent two heads  one i owned and one he owned  to bob  for justins mustang he was racing  . one turbo illegal here and one plain .we  had plenty  so why not ..   WE didnt charge bob for them  . .  but steven  asked for   autographed items which bob sent  .and a 100 dallor  check anyway  /steven never  cashed  it and  put it  in a picture frame . steven has  passed on  and i  do not know where  it went.. RIP BOB U DESERVE IT . ..

You bring up some interesting points, Trying to remember back when I started and don't remember getting much in the way of instructions.

I answer questions about the different flags when asked. I have not put the effort into finding new drivers to explain things to.

Running mini stocks all those years ago, the class was close and all the drivers made it a point to work with the new guys. Some tracks made you run a rookie stipe or marking on the back of the car so everyone new to watch.

I will try to think of some things that may help and welcome any input on what I can do from my position.

you mentioned mini stocks .   remember  steve  bobby   pops and i built alot of those cars without  pay  without  costing alot for  those rookies like 13  back to back   . . all the  while talking to those same drivers  the whats and nots  to do  ..  even though  you and i  very seldon  get behind the wheel anymore   we never  forgot  how to race ..    saturday morning  i met  a second time around driver  in the elevator  . from san antonio  he rented a legend car ...    running his second ever race .. ...     you have seen the glow a rookie puts out .. but also  dangerous glow .. lost in space  ... i  gave him  some  major advice   with out  his asking  he did  not know i use to drive .. till i said so and how many years  i have been working on cars    and such ..   the biggest  thing i told him  was keep it between the lines do not drive  past his paycheck   do not wreck someone  and pay attention   to the flags ..and do noit move up or down with the leaders go to pass you ..  the leaders have seen  where u are racing  long before they get to u .stay  there ..  ...   just a few on  the list   i mentioned to him .. i hope it helped him ..  always always  talk to a rookie  .i do  .. you are not just teaching that person  . when also  it can save your car form being destroyed ..  ..

guys pavement racing, blow those tires up. Run em low on the LS.. Oct 21 we are bringing them back. I need 20 cars and y'all can be the show. I'm gonna get some $ in this purse too. Tell your friends and enemies to show up. Oct 21.. show up quit asking what happens next you have a chance.

just to come to listen to you   is worth it rod ..  tell u dirt trackers  it was fun ..  used tires were not an issue .  we still have three of the tires on  the car that can race again  ..the right front blistered  becuase of two things ..  camber and to low tire pressure that was on me ..  the track gave  us from 3 pm to 9 pm  to work the cars in /... u do not have to destroy your car to race that track .. . .we changed springs  that most dirt cars have on them already .. . we did not add or take any weight  out of the car  fact it helped leaving it  ..we had no more stagger or less than what we run on dirt . what the average tires come out too .. we took only six  . with us .. ... practiced and ran  on the same four we sarted out with ..  other than  the right front as i mentioned we can run the same tires again  .no fall off ..

Hey HiTech my dad took me and two of my brothers to the dragrace you mentioned that had the army sponsored wheel stander tank "Hell on Wheels". They built it up for a week are longer prior to the race on radio making it sound like the tank was coming to Corpus to whoop up on the local driven Paddy Wagon, well there sure as heck was a a** whooping handed out as the Paddy Wagon won all three of their match races. In the early 70's this area had some of the best wheel standers in the country Paddy Wagon, Rare Bear, Fugititve, Daffy Duck I think I'm forgetting a couple. Besides those two wheel standers racing that day there were jet cars, dragsters and I think some funny cars also I can only remember a couple of them by name the USA-1 & Maxi Taxi were here and  pretty sure the Traveling Texan and Green Mamba both raced that day, dad took pictures we had put on slides I will try and hunt them up.

if u see a blured pic it was most likely me ruining  the shot .. yeps  got to see all those  wheel standers run .. i like that  tank on wheels ..

WAS great  after what 7  years on dirt   changing the car  to run there was different .. different not going home  covered in dirt . seeing some of our old tps old men still  racing ..  WE  finished second omn trhe mixed class factory stock ..  MOTOR   laid down on us in the feature and i missed the camber angle in the  and air pressure for the longer run  .lucky  one more lap  in the feature could have put the car in the wall  . peeled like a banana  never seen that before . but i know the reason why  ..he had to slow down the last  three or four laps from viberation ... but  we have some good notes  for if we maje the next one ..  got to  convince  the three  year old motor we need just a tad more power from it .. pick up  the slack  just once more this year .. give that 12 car some company ..as for those factory stocks who  did not or could not make it this round ..  u missed out it was fun  it was worth the run .load in october and bring them out ..   ..  ..

Thanks for the reply. My concern is those who show up racing with worn out pull offs may make for touchy racing. Have fun but be careful.

wet tracks on slicks make it touchy .. so nothing new for dirt racers ..the problem i am afraid of is losing grip  during the later stage of the race ..  i do not know that track at all  never been there or seen a race there .. jesse has and i wont say it on here but racing that track like u do  at another track  we know of works great .. i hope the car is a tad lose early and comes on  from half way on .. but  that  race is short  and might be having to run hard .. who knows i dont ..  i will be doing alot of tire   temp readings .

Help me here. Are asphalt pull offs good for dirt and too worn for asphalt generally speaking?

just luck of the draw on tires  rob ..  ..  . i think the futher south in texas    the tires are not as good ..  when so many buy them all over the place up north and east  . the pic of the best  litter does not  make down here as much .. we have a set of used tires  for houston .. all were ran  but some look like maybe end of race  or  practice  ..stagger isnt all that great but it is what it is .. .  being its been a while running on paved   we do not know how the car will handle there .. these cars  were not built for it .. all the flexing  off sets and so  on  shocks and sway bars will put u through the test ..  and with so little extra tires we dont have .. ur best hope the car is decent and can adjust it fast with out using up  those tires u will need for the feature ,, i dont know how many dirt drivers have raced on  paved but i would say  the biggest part of them have .. lucky  for us we have  many many years .. and the driver knows what not to do ..plus he raced there a time or two along time ago  .., the car  is the unknown //either way  we plan to  have fun  burning those tires up  most wont be any good for dirt i bet after . .. . when i built  a car for me back in the day  it took me two years   .. when asked all the time is it a  SHOW CAR  OR RACECAR...  i said no matter what it will look good doing  what ever  i do with it .. look good sitting there .look good winning . look good wrecking  or look good dead last but it will look good ..period .. and we plan on having fun no matter

My issue is not the racetrack. It's the amount of money it takes to attend a NASCAR race. The cost of getting there. The cost of a hotel room. The cost of food. The cost of food at the track. The cost of getting something off the drivers merchandise trailer.
