Leonard, Torres, Dinsmore, Okruhlik, Payton, and Sowder with I-37 Raceway wins, 4/28/2012
April 30, 2012
Pleasanton, Texas (April 28, 2012) After a scheduled week off for the Vintage Dirt Track Racing Association motorcycles, I-37 Raceway returned to action for stock cars Saturday night. Over 80 cars and drivers signed in for the nights events on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, clay track just south of Pleasanton.
Warmer temperatures and high winds quickly dried out the racing surface making for some tricky track conditions early in the night. Drivers and crew were able to adapt with both the IMCA Modifieds and Southern Sportmods seeing a last lap pass for the lead.
Darin Leonard picked up his first IMCA Modified win of the season, while Frank Okruhlik, Landon Sowder, Greg Dinsmore and Jarrett Payton found their way back to the Winners Circle. Johnny Torres was awarded the IMCA Southern Sportmod victory after first time I-37 winner, John Heil couldn’t pass on the tech pad.
Leonard’s Last Lap Pass Secures Win
Darin Leonard(Sinton) saw his son Cody take his first IMCA Sportmod feature win one month ago. Not to be out-done by the youngster, Darin finally broke through to the winners column, but it wasn’t easy. Friend, Harris Chassis team mate and sponsor, Bill Pittaway kept the pressure on Leonard throughout the 20-lapper. Pittaway was able to sneak past Leonard for the lead on lap 19, but Leonard fought back to retake the point coming to the checkers.

Carson Bednarz led from the pole into turn 1, but it was Leonard, on the top side coming off turn 2 with the lead. Jason Borlace, Pittaway, Bednarz and Chuck Chesler fell in line with Greg Dinsmore, Jamie Campbell and Bednarz three wide on lap 2. Dinsmore and Campbell again went three abreast, this time with Chesler for fourth.
As the top five finally sorted out it was Leonard, Pittaway, Campbell and Campbell up front, while Borlace, Chesler and Dinsmore were fighting for fourth. The top three checked out by halfway leaving Borlace, Chesler and Dinsmore three wide behind them. In the waning laps Campbell took a look under Pittaway for second, but Pittaway held steady and put some heat on Leonard.
The leaders came up on slower cars with Leonard and Pittaway going three wide. Pittaway came away with the lead as the white flag waved, with Leonard on his tail. Leonard got inside Pittaway in turns 1-2, but Pittaway held the edge on the back stretch. Leonard used the bottom in turns 3-4 to creep ahead coming to the checkers in his CD Electric, CC Coatings, Ace Transmission, Coastal Diesel, New Vision Graphics, Harris Chassis.
“I had to show the kid his dad still had it,” replied Leonard. “Cody has been teaching me quite a bit. Traveling to other shows at other tracks has given me the ability to work on the set up for my car too. It’s helped me in the long run as well as helping him.”
“I’m glad I got to race with Bill (Pittaway) for the win. We’re good friends and it was fun. That lapped car made it interesting. When I threw it into the turn, I thought I was going to hit the lapped car, but he pushed and I missed him and was able to get back by Bill at the finish. It was a good race. Awesome.”
“Bill talks quite a bit with the Harris Chassis guys and that has helped me a lot with this older car. We’ve both been doing some experimental stuff. I’m incorporating some of the newer stuff into this car. The changes I made this week really helped the car. I have to thank my main pit guy, Cody, and my wife and family for their support.”
IMCA Modifieds; 26 Darin Leonard, 37 Bill Pittaway, 29 Jamie Campbell, 21 Jason Borlace, 8g Greg Dinsmore, 49 Chuck Chesler, 37b Donald Banker, 16 Carson Bednarz, 10b Ellis Tracy, 31c Marlin Samford

Torres Tops After Tech in Sportmods
Defending track champ, Johnny Torres(San Antonio) got edged out in the final laps by John Heil after a late caution, but Heil was unable to pass tech inspection. This gave the win to Torres who chased down and passed early leader Anthony Gordon with five to go. A green, white, checker finish set up the chance for Heil to get under Torres for the lead coming to the white flag. Torres tried to fight back, but fell short until inspection found Heil with illegally grooved tires.

Former ROMCO Super Late Model champ, Tommy Grimes was first into turn 1 at the start of the 20-lap, 18-car IMCA Southern Sportmod main. Anthony Gordon, who continues to be on the verge of his first ever Sportmod win, beat Grimes off turn 4 to lead lap 1. Grimes fell in line second followed by Greg Lackey and a three wide scramble between Robert Williams, Larry Jernigan and Talon Minton for fourth.
Wiliams’ night ended early after a tangle with JJ Jennings sent him sailing over an infield tire. T. Minten got third from Lackey, while Heil and Torres ran wheel to wheel for sixth. As T. Minten picked off second from Grimes, Heil took fifth from Jernigan in the mad scramble for fourth on back that saw position change in every corner.
As they sorted out coming to halfway it was Gordon, T. Minten, Heil, Torres and Grimes in the top five. As Heil tried low on T. Minten, Torres took the high groove going around both for second, with Heil following to third. Torres then reeled in Gordon and took over the top spot on lap 16 bringing Heil along to second a lap later.
Torres was on his way to the victory as the leaders came to take the white flag, but a spin by Robbie Minten in turn 2 prompted the flagman to throw a yellow before the leaders got to the corner. Heil used the restart to duck inside Torres in turns 1-2 and alongside on the back stretch, Heil got the lead coming off turn 4 to the white. Torres, in the 24/7 Towing, Tator Plumbing, Rising Star Bodies, Rays Auto & Truck, Swenson Racing Products, Screen Pro Graphics, Spreen Race Engines, Vato Chassis, tried a crossover move, but came up short leaving Heil to take the checkers, that he later gave up in tech.
“We’re still getting the bugs worked out of the new car,” said Torres. “I really haven’t gotten some of the breaks that it takes to win from the 6th row most nights. I felt like we had the car to beat till the hooking bumpers and banging on the green, white, checker, finish.”

Dinsmore Dominates Limited Late Models
After a somewhat mediocre run, by his own standards, in the IMCA Modified main, Kerrville’s Greg Dinsmore rebounded and took it out on the Limited Late Model field. Dinsmore led flag to flag in the 15 feature driving the MK Wallace owned, Dirt Guys Motorsports, Cowans on the Creek, Miss Sharon, Wilson Brothers Septic, Guilott Realty, Metal Mart, MFI, Brutal Off Road, Dinsmore powered, Chevy.

Greg Dinsmore celebrates his victory in the Limited Late Models. JBHotshots.com photo.
Taking no prisoners, Dinsmore quickly jumped into the lead chased by Ron Sprayue, Craig Crawley, Andrew Hesler and Richard Bartosh. Bartosh and Hesler made contact sending Hesler around and Bartosh to the rear. Dinsmore got a good jump on the restart and began pulling away leaving Sprayue, Crawley, Hesler and Chris Brock battling for second.
As Dinsmore continued to build his lead Hesler was challenging Crawley for third finally taking the position on lap 13. Hesler kept up the late charge getting second from Sprayue on the final lap, while Dinsmore, with over a full straightaway lead, was cruising to the victory.
“That car was fast tonight,” said Dinsmore. “It was perfect. I think it could have out done my Modified tonight. Once I got stretched out I started easing through the corners, not try to slide and just maintain the lead you have. Basically just hit your marks and not try to overdrive the car. Look at as a slower is faster thing.”
“Running the Modified first really didn’t help me any tonight. That thing was all over the map. I changed the shock on Late Model, but they have such big tires, It’s really hard to spin them. After driving the smaller tired Modified, this car just hooks up.”

Okruhlik Outruns Jones in Street Stock Scramble
In what is quickly becoming more than a two-horse race in the Street Stock class this year, former Pure Stock champ, Frank Okruhlik held off defending champ Wade Jones for the victory. AJ Wernette, got by Jones and racing stable mate Okruhlik for the lead, but mechanical issues sidelined Wernette giving the lead back to Okruhlik, who edged out Jones at the finish.

After two aborted attempts, the 16-car Street Stock feature finally got underway with Multi-time track champ, Wade Jones getting the lead trailed by Shawn Moore, Dennis Hilla and AJ Wernette and a three wide battle for fifth that saw Okruhlik get that spot. The two Wernette Racing team mates, Okruhlik and Wernette began their charge to the front early in the 20-lap feature.
Okruhlik was able to get alongside and past Jones for the top spot on lap 7, bringing Wernette along to second. Wernette then got past Okruhlik for the lead on lap 8, while Jones, Justin Henley and Mike Lyon went three wide for third. Wernette put some distance on Okruhlik and looked have the win in his sights until drivetrain problems put him out. This handed the point back to Okruhlik, in the Wernette Racing, B&B Construction, Hot Rod Welding, JB Wastewater, WWI Trucking, Mission Race Engines, Chevy, who was chased to the checkers by Jones.
“I had nothing for AJ (Wernette) before he broke,” stated Okruhlik. “He had it sewn up. The best we can tell right now it was the transmission that let go. You never get tired winning though. It’s always something different. I was kind of worried where Wade (Jones) and AJ (Dancer) were. Those two have been the fast guys in this class for a while now. I figured they were back there just waiting for me to mess up.”
“It took me a little while to get use to driving a Street Stock. I think I got it now. This car is a lot faster than my Pure Stock, and you get more suspension on these cars to adjust on. Winning will happen again, shortly.”

Payton Takes Pure Stock Family Feud
San Antonio’s Jarrett Payton out-battled his sister, Brandy Ramzinski for top honors in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature. Payton, who took his first win of the season last race, made his way from tenth starting spot to scrap it out with Ramzinski after the midway point. Payton got the lead on lap 13, then inched away at the finish for the win in his Roudee 8 Services, Roosevelt U-Pull-It, Bettis Storage, 5A Graphics, Mission Auto, Chevy Nova.

Cameron Smith grabbed the early lead from the 18-car starting field trailed by Jamie Campbell, Ramzinski, Jerry Jones and Kary Scott. Janel Hilla made her way to battle with Ramzinski for third, while Payton started his march to the front. Ramzinski got by Campbell for second, then alongside Smith for the lead at the midway point. In the meantime Peyton and Hilla were slugging it out for fourth.
Ramzinski got the lead on lap 11, while Payton took second on lap 12. Action in three of the four corners brought out a yellow on lap 12 when Scott spun in turn 2, Charles Earnhardt III looped it in turn 3 and Adam Torres got hooked with Hilla in turn 4. Payton capitalized on the restart getting under Ramzinski for the lead on lap 13. From there, Payton was able to ease away the remaining circuits for the victory.
“She (Brandy) gave me that race,” explained Payton. “After that last caution she drifted up too high and left the bottom wide open for me. She’s just another racecar driver when we’re out there so I don’t really cut her any slack. I won’t hit her out though, unless she’s in my way. Not really, I treat her like anyone else out there. She came up and said I could have let her win. I said ‘No! A race is a race.’”
“I went out there tonight thinking that I was just going to have fun and not be able to challenge for a win. Everything just kind of played out for me, I made my way through traffic, and it worked out.”
“I really had no plan to make it up starting that far back. Just passed them as I got to them. I found a groove down low that car really liked so I stayed on the bottom. People would go in and slip up high, and I was able get by underneath.”
“I’m not going to say that I’m running for the championship, because once I do, bad things will start happening. I’m just out to have fun and if it falls into my lap, then I’ll take it.”

Sowder Fastest Front Runner
Landon Sowder was fastest of the 10-car Front Runner in their 15-lap feature. Sowder took over from early leader Hailee Marcx on lap 4. Multi-time winner, Dillon Gaither, had trouble early retiring from the event. Sowder and Marcx continued to battle for the lead with Marcx briefly getting back around Sowder. After a mid-race caution, Sowder was able to put some distance on Marcx and take the win his RicWell Construction, Chevy Cavalier.
“It took some had work,” commented Sowder. “I started pretty far back and was hard working my up and passing everyone. It was a fun race. I really enjoyed it. I like racing against Hailee(Marcx), she’s a good, clean racer and It’s always fun to race her. I’m hoping to shoot for the championship this year, but if I don’t it’s all good fun racing.”
“We’ve got a new car for this year and it’s pretty fast. We put some new tires on it and it’s made it go much better. Next year I’m looking to move up to Street Stock. Wayne Wernette has helped my dad and I a lot and we looking to get the 37w car.”

Go-Karts
Riley Heil, in only her third race, took home her second checkered flag win the win in Jr. Go-Kart Division.
“My dad helps me a lot on my set up,” said Heil. “BMF Shocks and Chassis sponsor’s my Kart. I’m not scared to race with the boys out there. This is my second win and my third race. I came out here to win. I’m going to move up in classes when I’m old enough. I want to drive a car just like my dad’s car.”

**Ed. note; This was my first return to a track since my heart attack. It was nice to be back at the races, and even nicer to have so many people come up and ask how I was doing. It’s great to have so many extended racing family members. By the end of the night I was a little out of gas, especially since most of the winners were out back, but slowly I’m getting back to normal.

Dereck Ramirez wins 5th Annual USMTS Texas Winter Nationals finale at Royal Purple Raceway
April 9, 2012
After recording his 300th career start on Thursday, Dereck Ramirez tasted victory for the first time Friday night at the Royal Purple Raceway.
He must’ve liked the flavor because the 25-year-old from Woodward, Okla., went back for seconds Saturday night and feasted on the $4,000 top prize in winning the 5th Annual USMTS Texas Winter Nationals – the final race of the season for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy.
Unlike Friday night when he started on the pole, Ramirez began Saturday’s 50-lap WIX Filters “A” Main from the ninth spot.
From the pole position, Rookie of the Year contender Jason Thoennes of Garfield, Minn., took the lead at the drop of the green flag with a trio of Texans – Dustin Hyde, Steven Whiteaker Jr. and Bobby Malchus – giving chase.
Despite his best starting position in a USMTS feature race, Thoennes was not rattled as he set a fast pace while leading the first 18 laps.
But Ramirez was faster and wrestled the lead away from Thoennes with 19 laps in the books.
From that point on, it was all Ramirez as he drove away from the field in the caution-free non-stop 50-lapper. He also finished fourth on Thursday night to bring his weekend take home pay to $7,800.
Removing all doubt about whether or not he could hang on to the Southeast Region points lead, Jason Hughes scored his best result of the weekend with a runner-up finish to secure his first regional title of the year.
Thoennes got his career-best USMTS finish with a third-place showing while Rodney Sanders came from 15th on the starting grid to finish fourth and earn the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.
Thursday night’s winner, Chris Brown, grabbed fifth ahead of teammate Kelly Shryock. Seventh through tenth were 17th-starting Ryan Gustin, AFCO Pole Award winner Johnny Scott, Zack VanderBeek and Tommy Weder Jr.
Hughes emerged as the Southeast Region champion with a 39-point cushion over Gustin, who won four of the other five regional points battles en route to becoming the 2011 USMTS National Champion.
Shryock, who won the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Great Plains Region, finished third in the final Southeast Region rankings while Ramirez long-jumped from eighth to fourth with his win on the final night.
Sanders wound up fifth, John O Whittington was sixth, Randy Timms earned seventh, Shane Hebert finished eighth, Johnny Scott nabbed the ninth position and Clyde Dunn Jr. rounded out the top 10 in the final rankings – just one point ahead of Tommy Weder Jr.

ASCS National Tour Returns to the Golden Triangle, Battleground this weekend

ASCS National Tour Returns to the Golden Triangle, Battleground this weekend
by Bryan Hulbert
Tulsa, OK (April 8, 2012) - New and returning tracks is a common theme for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV in 2012. Returning from a two week break in competition, the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV ventures into the Gulf South region of Texas for a pair of nights in familiar yet unfamiliar territory.
Beginning Friday April 13th, the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV will make their long awaited return to Beaumont, Texas. Absent since 2002, Golden Triangle Raceway Park last saw the ASCS National Tour under the name Speedway 90 when a trio of events saw victory going to Zach Chappell (4/5/02), Tim Crawley (9/27/02), and Michael Dupuy (9/28/02). Races at Golden Triangle Raceway Park will also include a test and tune on Thursday April 12th from 6pm until 10pm.
After Friday night’s race is recorded the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV heads next to Battleground Speedway near Highlands, Texas on Saturday April 14th. Frequented by the Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South Region, this Saturday’s race marks the first time the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV has appeared at the high banked 3/8 mile clay oval, making it the 120th different track to host a national event since 1992.
Jason Johnson enters this weekend as the series point’s leader. After besting a field of 39 cars at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway on March 24th, the “Ragin Cajun” holds a 39 point advantage over Wayne Johnson who has finished no worse than fifth since the season began for the national tour.
Over the past two weeks, the driver of the City Vending 77 has had great success in the Gulf South and Lone Star regions, claiming a victory in the Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South Region at
Golden Triangle Raceway Park and Heart ‘O Texas. Johnson’s most recent triumph came this past weekend at the Oil Medics Lone Star Region opener at the Lone Star Speedway.
Brady Bacon holds the show position with 52 markers separating the driver of the Fatheadz Eyewear 99 from Johnson’s Roush/Yates 41. Sitting fourth is the Oil Medics 18 piloted by Tony Bruce Jr. who is
currently 79 points out of the lead with the Ark Wrecking 2 of Dustin Morgan rounding out the top five 107 points out of the top spot. Sixth in points is Johnny Herrera with Gary Wright seventh. Danny
Wood, after suffering a massive crash at the Devil’s Bowl, sits eighth in the championship standings with Matt Covington and Jack Dover rounding out the top ten.
Both nights of racing this weekend will be paired with the Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South Region. With the two week break in national competition, the region has played host to several national
tour drivers with a trio of national drivers sitting atop the standings. Tony Bruce Jr. leads the regional standings with Seth Bergman and Aaron Reutzel rounding out the podium.
Reigning Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South regional champion Ray Allen Kulhanek currently sits fourth with Michael McNeil currently rounding out the top five.

Dinsmore undeniable in the IMCA Modified feature at I-37 Raceway at Newsome Motor Park
March 18, 2012
Racing season kicked off at I-37 Raceway’s ¼-mile, semi-banked, clay oval Saturday night with familiar faces in familiar places, as well as some new or returning drivers. Friday night was one final test-n-tune for drivers/teams to get their cars dialed in for the first race of the year for many, while others with a few races already under their belts did some fine tuning.
Saturday night’s turnout saw an overflow in the pits with teams having to pit in the outer parking area and a good crowd of spectators filling the stands. Despite the Friday practice session and strong southerly winds, the track held up throughout the night with drivers finding bite on the high and low side during the features.
Looking to defend their 2011 championships are Greg Dinsmore(IMCA Modified), Johnny Torres(IMCA Southern Sportmod), Trey Votion(Limited Late Model) and Wade Jones(Street Stock). Pure Stock champion, Frank Okruhlik moves to a variety of classes for 2012, while Front Runner champ, Cody Earnhardt gets his introduction into the Pure Stocks.
Dinsmore, Votion and Jones all scored feature wins, Torres gave JJ Jennings a good run in the Sportmods but came up one position short, with Okruhlik falling out of both the Pure and Street Stock events. Cody Earnhardt’s Pure Stock debut was delayed after they were unable to complete the car in time.
Dinsmore un-Deniable in Modified Main
Kerrville’s Greg Dinsmore picked up in the 2012 season where he ended in the final points battle, first. Campaigning a new Harris Chassis this year Dinsmore worked his way from the third row to the front before halfway using a set-up from fellow Harris driver Jimmy Gustin, and the low side of the track. After picking up the lead from 2010 track champ, Bill Pittaway, Dinsmore was chased at the finish by last year’s points rival, Jamie Campbell.

Greg Dinsmore (19) passes Jamie Campbell early in the race on his way to an IMCA Modified victory. Jamie Brabson photo.
Pittaway grabbed the early lead as the 20-lap IMCA Modified main fired off trailed by Chuck Chesler, Campbell and Dennis Taylor. Darin Leonard had immediate problems and pulled off, leaving Dinsmore fifth. Dinsmore began picking them off one by one when caution flew for a car stopped in the pit exit on lap 3.
Once back to green Dinsmore snagged second from Chesler and closed on Pittaway for the lead. Ducking low in turn 1, Dinsmore got alongside Pittaway and by in turns 3-4 to get the lead on lap 6. Campbell, using the top went around Chesler then Pittaway for second, but well behind Dinsmore.
At the crossed flags it was Dinsmore, Campbell, Pittaway, Jason Borlace and Chesler in the top five. Borlace was able to get third from Pittaway on lap 13 while Taylor and Chesler swapped fifth. Campbell was able to cut into Dinsmore’s lead at one point but gave the ground back trying to pass a lapped car running in his line.
As the white flag waved it was Dinsmore holding a ¾ straightaway margin over Campbell that he held to the checkers. It was the car’s second win of the season after Iowa’s, Jimmy Gustin grabbed the season opener at Mountain Creek Speedway in the racetechinfo.com, Custom Concrete, Guadalupe Electric, JB Hotshots, Wells Designs, Ryan Bard Safety Foundation, J&V NAPA, KS Engineering, Harris Chassis.
“The car was crazy fast,” replied Dinsmore. “It was great. The new car was set up just right, and the borrowed motor was really fast. It was awesome. I watched Jimmy Gustin run around the tires when he drove it. I tried to stick the left front near the infield tires and found some moisture there. The car had good bite coming off on the straightaway. I’d lose a bit in (turns 3-4), but gain it back in (turns)1-2.”
“The low line started going away near the end and I thought about trying the top. I didn’t hear anyone back there and I tried to look back in the corners but didn’t see anyone. I was just holding on to what I had and it worked out.”
“The car is set up the way Jimmy was going to run it; it even still has number on one side and seat in it. I had to change my driving style some to fit his set up. He drives it through the corner deeper than I normally do. Plus he runs a lot more rear brake than I do, and the car was a little tight. I think in talking with Jimmy and Bob(Harris) we can get it closer to my style.”
“I don’t know if I’m going run for a championship this year. I’m just looking to have some fun. I want to race, but don’t want to get so serious about it that I have to worry about breaking something.”

Jennings Jammin’ in Sportmod Scramble
JJ Jennings(Corpus Christi) parlayed a front row starting position into a Sportmod victory leading nearly every lap. Jennings got passed on the start by Talon Minten on lap 1, but retook the top spot on lap 2. Multi-time track champ, Johnny Torres closed in on the tail of Jennings during the mid-stages of the 20-lapper, but Jennings was able to pull away at the end leaving Torres battling with newcomer, John Heil.

As the 18-car IMCA Southern Sportmod main took the green, Jennings was first into turn 1. Talon Minten went around on the high side to lead lap 1, but Jennings got the lead back on lap 2. Defending champ, J. Torres took second from T. Minten with Heil trying to follow. Heil had just made the pass when yellow waved for a tangle between Gene Hyde, Greg Rohmer and Patrick Kelly.
On the restart Heil used the top to get past T. Minten, but did a half spin and fell back to sixth. J. Torres was on Jennings tail as they came to halfway with T. Minten, Bruce Barber and Robby Minten holding the top five spots. As Barber worked on T. Minten, Heil got back by R. Minten for fifth, then under Barber for fourth.
Heil was again just making a pass on T. Minten only to have caution come out for a spin by Mickey Helms after contact by Cody Leonard, who was sent to the tail. Jennings got a good jump on J. Torres as the race resumed, but R. Minten spun off turn 4, with Craig Lepore spinning behind. It wasn’t long after the restart when Alan Torres and Randy Bennett got together for the races final slow down.
Once back to green, Jennings eased out from J. Torres with Heil and T. Minten side by side for third. Heil got the spot on lap 17, while Jennings continued to add to his margin. Heil caught J. Torres on the final lap, but it was Jennings in the G&M Services, Bud Light, P&K, WFI Waste Management, CB’s Race Engines, Western Flyer Race Car taking the win.
“My brother’s wife drew a one on the redraw, that helped me a lot,” stated Jennings. “That’s the second time she’s done that, and starting up front always helps. It’s always fun to come up here. A week and a half ago this car was bare. The guys up at Western Flyer hooked us up. We stayed up late Thursday and all day Friday getting it ready. It’s been a long three days, but it was worth it.”
“There’s something messed up in the steering box, quickener or power steering, it kept getting stuck. I wasn’t going to pull off unless it stuck all the way. It lasted long enough to finish, but we’ll be taking it all off and checking it out.”
“I thought I was done when Talon(Minten) went around me. He went by me on the outside like I was standing still. That kid is going to be good, just give him some time. He and his brother will be winning some races. I’m glad he raced me clean and we didn’t tear up anything. We went over to Ray(Doyons) shop and put the wrap on it today. They’re good people.”
“I’ve got to thank my brother for putting all the money into getting this car to get it done and my wife for putting up with all this. It’s all his car. I just show up, pay my pit pass and get to drive it. My whole family is involved. My grandpa is going to be 82 and he comes to watch. That’s what it’s all about.”

Victory for Votion in Limited Late Models
Defending track champ, Trey Votion showed why he won last year’s championship taking home the hardware in the 15-lap feature. Craig Crawley took over the point from Howie Marcx, making his return, but Crawley failed to go on a restart giving up the lead to Votion. As Votion eased away, Bo Beckner and 2010 champ, Richard Bartosh battled it out for second leaving Votion unchallenged at the checkers.

Marcx jumped out front as green waved on the Limited Late Model feature with Crawley looking low. Marcx led lap 1, but gave up the lead to Crawley with Ron Sprayue and Bartosh getting past Gary Hunter. Sprayue and Bartosh then got around Marcx for second and third, with Votion following to fourth. Sprayue’s run up front ended when he spun from second in turn 4.
As green waved again, Crawley’s car failed to go with Votion squirting through a hole to grab the lead on lap 6. Bo Beckner came out the stack up with third as Crawley fell back. As Votion eased away, Beckner got second from Bartosh. Votion in the Northside Ford, BG Products, Mission Racing, ZDT Amusement Park, Kelly Automotive, Northside Collision, Kelly Chassis, held his advantage over Beckner at the finish.
“Definitely feels pretty good,” commented Votion. “It was kind of scary after that crash in the heat race. I thought for we tore out the whole rear end. I was just hoping it wouldn’t vibrate or something. It was a lot freer than it normally is, but it still worked pretty well. I was happy to be able to finish the race and run well.”
“I just went out to see what the car was going to be able to do. The track was a bit slicker, so I was just taking my time to get anything and it worked out.”
“With John Heil running, and Greg Dinsmore getting a car ready, that’s going to be some stiff competition. That’s what this class needs, more good cars and more good drivers. Hopefully we can keep the fenders on them, have fun and go at it.”
“We’re looking at this year like the last one. I want to come out here and be able run without tearing anything up all year. If it works out, I’m going to try to back up my championship, but we’ll see what happens.”

Jourdanton’s Jones Sweeps Street Stock
Despite being sick, Wade Jones was still able to stick it out and sweep the Street Stock feature and heat race wins. Jones, who went wire to wire in the 15-lap feature, was chased throughout the race by AJ Wernette. Wernette closed the gap in traffic, but once clear Jones held his margin to the finish line.

Wade Jones celebrates in the winner’s circle after his Street Stock victory. Jamie Brabson photo.
The 13-car Street Stock feature saw Jones leading into turn 1 followed by Brian Becka, Wernette, Dennis Hilla and Frank Okruhlik. Wernette and Hilla both got past Becka for second and third as the top three separated out. This left Becka, Okruhlik and Mike Lyon battling for fourth until Okruhlik pulled off early.
Wernette was able to shorten the gap some after Jones hit traffic, but once clear; Jones still had a good margin. The only battle left for Jones the final laps was a 100 degree temperature and flu-like symptoms. At the checkers it was Jones in the Opiela Mechanical, Horelka Racing, Mission Auto Parts, SABFI, Mobil 1, Jeff’s Auto Rebuilders, 74 Ranch & Resort, Camaro with the win.
“The track was great,” said Jones. “I was worried about being a little rusty from the off-season going into the first race. I think the set up on the car helped carry me through. I was running a 100 degree fever, but once we got going I forgot all about being sick. I really have to thank my G’ma and G’pa, plus all my family and sponsors.”

Pure Stock Honors to Hilla After Tech
Robert Danielson looked to be the easy winner in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature going flag to flag with nearly a full straightaway advantage at the end. Unfortunately Danielson’s car failed post-race tech inspection giving the victory to 2007 Pure Stock titlist, Janel Hilla.

Janel Hilla, during her heat race, was the Pure Stock winner. Jamie Brabson photo.
At the start of the 21-car Pure Stock feature Danielson quickly got out front but in the pack Bill McCall and Trey Heald got together with Heald pounding the front stretch wall. On the second start, Danielson again eased out front of Jerry Jones, with Janel Hilla and Brandy Ramzinski in pursuit. Jay Dancer brought out another early caution when he tagged an infield tire and spun.
On the restart Jones and Hilla made contact fighting for second with Hilla getting the spot. Ramzinski followed to third, but yielded that spot for Charles Earnhardt III. Coming to lap Dancer, the three made contact with Dancer finding the wall. Earnhardt and Ramzinski both made pit stops, but would retire later from damages.
Back under green, Hilla took a peek under Danielson for the lead when Okruhlik and Kary Scott tangled in turn 2. Danielson and Hilla broke away on green from Devin Adler, Ryan Doyon and Phillip Haywood. Haywood and Adam Torres made contact scraping for fifth with Torres going for a spin, but Haywood was deemed responsible and sent to the tail. Again Danielson and Hilla eased ahead, with Doyon trying Adler high for third.
Torres found a hole low and snuck past both for the spot on lap 13. Danielson was able to pull out to a full straight lead over on his way to the checkers, but would fail on the tech pad. This handed the win to Hilla in the NAPA, Riley Welding, Alamo Bolt & Screw, Q-Hauling, Paloma Cattle Co., Johnny’s Paint & Body, Premium Water Well Service, Alpha Machine, Mission Racing, Chevy.

Snider Swipes First Front Runner Win
After over two years of trying, Cindy Snider(Orange Grove) picked up her first ever Front Runner feature win. Snider, who had been plagued with mechanical issues in the past, battled with Hailee Marcx and Roy Easler jr. in the waning laps. Coming out of a three wide fight for the lead, Snider got the spot with two to go and held on for the victory.

Cindy Snyder (66c) holds off Roy Esler Jr. her Front Runner victory. Jamie Brabson photo.
At the start of the 15-lap Front Runner feature Dillon Gaither jumped out front with Easler and Marcx on his tail. Gaither and Easler eased ahead with Marcx, Landon Sowder and Snider battling for third. Lindy Schroat got sideways while being lapped and tagged by Easler for a lap 5 caution. Gaither and Sowder pulled away on green as Easler worked back up. Gaither saw his lead end when it appeared the car broke and he spun in turn 2.
This gave the top spot to Sowder, but he was unable to get going as green waved with Marcx assuming the lead on lap 9. Marcx was challenged by Easler and Snider. They were three wide on lap 11, but Marcx held the spot with Snider on her side. Snider finally secured the spot on lap 13 and held off Easler in the Sandoval Motorsports, Snider Racing, Stannard Photography, Twisted Motors, Ford Probe to grab win number one.
“I’m on cloud nine,” replied Snider on her first ever feature win. “I’ve been trying for two and a half years. I picked up this new car from the Sandoval’s over the off season. They ran it last year at CC Speedway. Prior to that it was run here by Brandy Ramzinski, so it’s back home. I’ve got a good car now. I knew it was good when I got it.”
“I was surprised when I was able to get by (Roy) Easler and Hailee(Marcx) there at the end. When I took the white flag and realized I was in the lead I was yelling all the way down the back stretch. I couldn’t believe it, I was so excited.”

Sullivan, Shryock, Gieber take Dirt Track Championship wins at TMS Dirt Track, 3/3/12
March 4, 2012
by J M Hallas
Saturday wrapped up the racing on Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track’s 4/10 mile, semi-banked, dirt track as the Texas World Dirt Track Championships, presented by Port-a-Cool concluded. With eight spots already locked up the Modified and Limited Modified classes, the remaining drivers tried their luck to fill the spots open for the championship features and the chance for the prestigious trophy and signature cowboy hat.
The SUPR Late Models was also on hand running a full event slate as they qualified for their big 40-lap main event through heats races and last chance qualifiers. Several past champions were in attendance including last year’s winner, Will Vaught, two time race winner Rob Litton(2006, 2009) and 2010 winner John Anderson.
One driver joined an elite group winning races in two different classes, another became the fifth two-time winner, while another set another, perhaps even more difficult feat, putting his cars in all three A-mains for night.

Jack Sullivan (Greenbriar, Ark.) became the fifth Late Model driver to take home a second victory at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. Sullivan joined Raymond Merrill, Kelly Boen, Rob Litton and Ray Moore as he out-dueled former winners, Will Vaught early in the 40-lap main, and then John Anderson in mid stages before pulling away from the pack. Sullivan, who took the win in memory of a friend who passed away during the evening, was only slowed by lapped traffic towards the finish. He was able to maintain a comfortable margin despite slower cars, as he roared to the checkers.
Vaught jumped into the lead as the 21-car Late Model main fired off chased by Sullivan, Morgan Bagley, Sullivan and Chris Brown. After a lap 2 caution for spins by Jeff Chandler and Derek Perkins, Sullivan picked off Bagley for third, while the pack raced three and sometimes four wide. Zach McMillan brought out a lap 9 yellow with a spin in turn 4.
Once back to green, Sullivan began his march to the front trying Anderson low. Anderson fought back and put the heat on Vaught for the lead. As the leader ran side by side, Jon Mitchell took a top five spot from Brown. Taking advantage of the lead battle, Sullivan snuck past for second on lap 10 and got alongside Vaught for the lead. Just as Sullivan got the nose out front, yellow waved for debris, negating the pass.
Not to be discouraged, Sullivan was door to door with Vaught on the restart finally securing the top spot on lap 14. Sullivan then stretched out his lead coming to the crossed flags followed by Vaught, Anderson, Bagley and Mitchell. Lap 20 saw caution fly for Timothy Culp who spun and nearly got drilled by Allen Tippen. After several restarts for spins in the pack, Sullivan jumped ahead leaving Vaught and Anderson battling for second.
Anderson and Vaught swapped second for a couple laps giving Sullivan the chance to rebuild a big margin on both. Anderson finally took second with Bagley now challenging Vaught for third. Sullivan caught the back of the field with ten to go and had some trouble getting through the side by side traffic. Anderson was unable to capitalize on the situation only closing a small distance.
Bagley was able to grab third from Vaught in the waning laps while Kevin Sitton made his way up to battle with Litton for fifth. With two to go, Sullivan finally cleared traffic, as Sitton snagged fifth from Litton. Once clear of slower cars Sullivan in the Triple A Diesel Service, JFR Graphics, Peterson Fluid Systems, Central Arkansas Pest Control, MSR Mafia, Bryant Motorsports, Wiles Driveshaft’s, All-star Performance, Penske Shocks, Russell Baker Race Engines, GRT Chassis, easily cruised to the victory.
“I want to dedicate this win to Rusty Kirkey who passed away this evening.” commented Sullivan. “He was my girlfriend’s step-father and a part of our race team. I thought about him the final few laps. It’s amazing what you think about(during a race). You’re trying to hit your line and do the right things. All these wins are special and this made it even more important. I came down here when this place first opened and thought how would feel to win here, now I’ve won twice. I thank God for that.”
“It felt good out there. The car was working well. This is a new car we had out here tonight and we did a lot of front end work on it. It was very good; I was really impressed with it. It’s kind of a crap shoot at first, but we have a basic set up that we show up with and go from there. It’ was too free in the heat race so we really tightened it up quite a bit for the feature. It worked out good for us.”
“I was just biding my time at the beginning of the race. I knew I could get around the bottom. I started thinking I needed to get on it and get the lead as soon as I could before anyone else found the line. If they got there first it would be harder for me to get past them. I had one of my crew guys showing me how far ahead I was when I got in traffic. I messed with that lapped car longer than I wanted to. I needed to try to get on by him before he wrecked or something. But I’ve been lapped traffic before, so it’s a give/take thing.”

Shryock Scores Modified Main(After Tech)
The third time was a charm for Fertile, Iowa’s Kelly Shryock who was awarded the 30-lap Modified Championship win after Chris Brown, running a Shryock team car, was DQ’ed in tech for being light. Shryock jumped from row two into the lead and looked to be the winner early, but Brown made a last ditch pass coming to the white flag and beat Shryock back to the finish line. In tech inspection it was discovered that Brown was light after apparently losing some lead in front of the motor plate. This gave the win to Shryock, in his third attempt at the Texas World Dirt Track Championship title.
Bobby Malchus and Chris Henigan stayed wheel to wheel into turn 1 at the start of the 26-car Modified feature. Coming from outside of the second row, Shryock, the 9-time USMTS champion, shot past both to lead coming back for lap 1. Malchus, Henigan, Brown and Corey Babbitt fell in line behind Shryock. Clyde Dunn went around on lap 1 for an early caution.
After another quick yellow, Shryock began to edge away with John Whittington having his night end after problems while running sixth. The top three had just spread out when Henigan broke from third and stopped in turn 2. As Shryock and Malchus got away on the restart, Tristan Dycus was chasing Zack Van Der Beek for fourth.
Malchus took a couple looks low on Shryock, while the pack was still three wide behind them. As Dycus began to fall back, John Anderson was moving forward getting by Dycus then Van Der Beek for fourth. Brown, in an identical Shryock car, took second from Malchus followed by Babbitt, when yellow flew for a Robert Baker spin.
Back to green, Babbitt got under Malchus with the top five coming to halfway Shryock, Brown, Babbitt, Malchus and Van Der Beek getting fifth back from Anderson. Van Der Beek then got inside Malchus for fourth leaving him side by side with Anderson as Steve Whiteaker jr. closed in. Randy Timms joined that fight with Anderson, Whiteaker and Timms going three wide before Timms grabbed the spot.
Dunn, recovering from an early spin made his way back into the top ten before having trouble again and pulling off. Van Der Beek continued his charge to the front taking third from Babbitt on lap 27 while Malchus and Timms battled for fifth. Brown caught his car owner, Shryock and took a look low as the leaders diced in traffic. Van Der Beek took advantage of the chance to reel in the lead duo.
As Van Der Beek tried a move on Brown for second they made contact with Van Der Beek giving up some distance. With two to go Brown was again peeking under Shryock and coming to the white flag got the bumper out front. Brown held off Shryock coming back to the finish, but gave up the win in tech to Shryock in the Lone Star Hydro Maintenance, Houston Specialty Products, CJ Auto Sales, B&L Satellite Rental, DK Arndt, Lake Mills Motorsports, VP Racing Fuel, Pro Power, Skyrocket Chassis.
“The third time was a charm,” quipped Shryock. “We’ve come down here twice before and weren’t even able to make the feature. We had some bad luck with a blown engine and crashed. Running up front at a place like this is unbelievable. I was just kind of taking it easy toward the end and misread the signal from my crew. Sometimes you’re like a sitting duck being out front. He just smoked us at the end.”
“It’s just an unfortunate deal for Chris(Brown) to fail tech. It was a great race between us. He and his family treat us well when we come down here to race. We enjoy having him drive the backup car. I’ve got two sisters, so he’s kind of like the brother I don’t have. We don’t normally have to run that much weight in front of the motor plate and the extra weight he added came off during the race.”
“This was pretty much our Baytown set up. We were pretty good down there, but not great. Maybe I’ll have to drive my old car instead of this new one. We still have some work to do on the new one. We had a good season with the old car, winning fifteen races, so we knew it was still a good one and Chris can drive the wheels off a Modified.”

Frankston’s Dennie Gieber joined the elite group of drivers winning at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track in two different classes, after taking the 30-lap Limited Modified feature. Gieber, who took a Modified win back in 2003, got by John Whittington near midway then held off another past Modified champion, Randy Timms after a late race caution rebunched the field.

Steve Whiteaker jr., who added a record of sorts, to his own to his resume becoming the only driver to qualify in all three classes, set sail as green waved on the 26-car Limited Modified field. Whittington and Robert Elliot were side by side for second, while Timms and Gieber ran wheel to wheel for fourth. As the top five sorted out, Matt Mueller, Doug Easterling and Derek Grigsby were three wide for sixth.
Chase Allen brought out the first caution on lap 9 when he had problems in turn 2. Once back to green Gieber and Timms both swept past Elliot for third and fourth. As Whiteaker began to ease away, Grigsby and Jason Troutman were challenging Elliot for fifth. Whiteaker’s run up front started to end on lap 13 when he slowed giving up the lead to Whittington followed by Gieber and Timms.
Mueller stopped along the back stretch and Greg Deterding off in turn 3 brought a yellow on lap 14 at which time Whiteaker pulled to the pits. Back under green Grigsby went around Elliot for fourth leaving him side by side with Troutman. At the midway point it was Whittington, Gieber, Timms, Grigsby and Elliot holding down the top five.
Gieber got by Whittington for the top spot on lap 16 that saw a multi-car crash in turn 2 bring the action to a halt with several suffering damage and a couple other forced to retire. Gieber got a good jump as green waved again leaving Timms and Whittington battling for second while Elliot and Troutman began to swap fifth.
After a brief battle, Timms took second from Whittington, with Jason Ingalls now pressuring Elliot for fifth. Edward Oakes brought out the final yellow on lap 23 with a spin in turn 2. The front four stayed in line on the restart with Gieber easing away to a five car length lead with five to go. Gieber, in the Dewayne and Kandi Wilkerson owned, Dent Magic, AMS Race Engines, Wicked Chassis took the margin to the finish line.
“It was a really good night, though a little stressful,” said Gieber. “We had a good run, and I had a good pit crew to get me where I’m at. Just knowing you have that caliber of drivers behind who will capitalize on any mistake you makes put some pressure on you. I just tried to keep the car out front and not make any of those mistakes.”
“This is one the biggest wins we’ve had and ranks up against some the others we’ve had, especially against these guys from all over the south. It’s been a long time coming to get back in the Winners Circle here. We felt like we were owned one and stepped it up for tonight. Troy(Taylor) is one of my heroes and to be in any group with him is an honor. I’ve watched him race for years and he’s certainly one of the best around and at this place.”
“My pit crew really stepped up this weekend. We had brake issues and pretty much rebuilt the entire brake system. They got us up and going.”

Shryock, Gieber take Friday’s Port-a-Cool Texas World Dirt Track Qualifiers
March 3, 2012
Heat races would take the top 16 in passing points directly to each classes A-qualifier, with C and B-qualifiers filling the remaining spots for each of the 15-lap events.
Tomorrow night the SUPR Late Models add to the prestigious event with a full program on the slate for them. The Modifieds and Limited Modifieds have Last Chance qualifiers on tap, with a pole dash for the eight drivers already set for Saturday nights championships.
Saturday preview; Multi-time USMTS National Champion, Kelly Shryock, looks to be the first Iowa driver to win against a stout Modified field. Dennie Gieber(Jacksonville) hopes to join a rare list by taking a second class Championship in the Limited Modified feature. Gieber, who won a Modified event back in 2003, would join Troy Taylor as a two-class champion.
With a good run in the SUPR events on Saturday, Corpus Christi’s Steve Whiteaker tries to be the first driver to ever make the show in all three classes. Whiteaker, who scored a Modified victory in the fall of 2010, could become another two or possibly three class winner.
Shryock Strikes in Modified Qualifier
Kelly Shryock(Fertile, Ia.) showed the 24-car car Modified field nothing but his rear bumper going wire to wire in the 15-lap A-qualifier. Shryock, who earned the pole with the most passing points, beat Tyler Townsend into turn 1 and that was all he needed. Bobby Malchus, who won in 2010, tried his best to chase Shryock, but to no avail as Shryock eased away at the finish.
Shane Hebert saw his night end early after he had issues before the green flag ever flew. When green did fly, Shryock blasted off like a ‘skyrocket’ with Malchus and Tristan Dycus getting by Townsend for second and third. Townsend and Dycus hooked bumpers shaking up the top five as Chris Henigan, Chris Brown and Corey Babbitt moved into the top five.
Shryock and Malchus began to put some distance on the field when the races only caution waved for a spin in turn 4 by Townsend. The restart was about as close as Malchus ever got to Shryock as he got a good jump, while his sister car, driven by Brown, tried the high side of Henigan for third. Steve Whiteaker jr. made a charge from his mid-pack start, getting by Zack Van Der Beek for seventh.
At halfway it was still Shryock, holding the advantage at the point, Malchus, Henigan, Brown and Babbitt, while Whiteaker and Van Der Beek continued to slug it out. Shryock inched away throughout the final laps, as the field separated out among the transfer spots. At the checkers it was Shryock, in the Lone Stare Hydro Maintenance, Houston Specialties Products, VP Racing Fuels, CJ’s Auto Sales, Lake Mills Motorsports, Pro Power Engines, Skyrocket Chassis, easily taking the victory.

Gieber Grabs Limited Modified Honors
After the initial start was aborted, Dennie Gieber hustled his way out front at the start of the 24-car Limited Modified A-qualifier. Steve Whiteaker jr. didn’t make it as easy on Gieber as the two past Modified winners battled up front. Whiteaker kept the pressure on Gieber during a large portion of the 15-lap event, who then held on after a late restart for top honors.
Gieber got the jump on the field as the race began, but a spin by RJ Stroman quickly brought the yellow out. Again Gieber led the way on the next start trailed by Whiteaker, Jason Troutman and John Whittington. Matt Mueller and Doug Easterling moved in on Whittington going three wide for the spot on lap 3. Randy Timms closed in to join that battle on lap 4.
Mueller got around Troutman for third leaving him side by side with Whittington and Derick Grigsby on their tail. Rowdy Day went around on lap 8, almost taking Gieber out of the lead, and brought out the yellow. The top four eased ahead back under green, while Troutman, Easterling, Grigsby, Timms and Robert Elliot battled for a transfer spot.
Whiteaker was just beginning to challenge Gieber on the high side when Darrell McGee broke and stopped on track for a caution. Gieber got a good jump on Whiteaker when green waved again, while Timms used the high side to get past Easterling. Shane Hebert ran down the battle for the eighth and final spot with two laps to go.
That run by Hebert came to an end as the field was coming to the white when Hebert broke and rolled to a stop on the front stretch. SUPR flagman David Corbello showed the field the white and green for one final dash to the finish. As Gieber took off, Whittington went past Mueller and was trying Whiteaker. At the checkers it was Gieber driving the Dewayne and Kandi Wilkerson owned, AMS Engines, Wicked Chassis, taking the win.

White, Kiphen, Killen, Watson, Sunday Icebreaker winners at Abilene Speedway
February 28, 2012
Sunday ended the weekend for the 2012 Icebreaker, presented by Smileys and Showtime Signs & Designs, on Abilene Speedway’s ¼ mile. Drivers in all three IMCA classes (Modified, Southern Sportmods, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks) competed for early season track, state regional and national points, as well as the Lone Star Series.
Afternoon racing is always tricky on the high-banked, red clay, oval as drivers and crews scrambled for their best dry slick set up throughout the day’s events.
White Goes Wire to Wire for Modified Money
Capping off a fairly decent weekend, Academy’s Keith White ended on a winning note going flag to flag in the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event. Joe Spillman was first into turn 1 from the pole, but White was able to duck underneath him coming off turn 4 to lead lap 1. Vince Ogle took over second on an early restart and chased down White during the midway point. Ogle made up the distance in the waning laps, but couldn’t find a way around the Southern Regional champion, White at the checkers.

Keith White took the Sunday Modified win at the Icebreaker. Debbie Johnson photo.
As green waved on the 20-car IMCA Modified field Spillman eased ahead in the first corner, but got passed by White coming back to the line. A multi-car melee in turns 3-4 brought the action to halt quickly on lap 1. On the first try at a restart, Mark Patterson went around and collected Jason Hunter in turn 4. Finally back under green, Ogle took second from Spillman with he and White beginning to inch away.
Allen Bradley tried to put Spillman back another spot, but ended up giving his spot to Fred Wojtek on lap 8. At halfway it was White and Ogle with a huge lead on the pack while Spillman, Wojtek and Bradley rounded out the top five. A track tire brought out the first caution on lap 10 bringing the field back to the lead duo. Under caution, Spillman pulled off from third with oil pressure issues.
On the restart, Hunter dropped the driveshaft in his ride to bring the yellow right back out. Once back to green White got a car length on Ogle with Brandon Stewart looking low on Charles Brewer for fifth. The top two again began easing away from the field to settle the match between themselves.
Stewart was finally able to get past Brewer on lap 16, while Ogle closed back up on White. With two to go, Ogle was on White’s tail, but White crept ahead by two car lengths as the white flag waved. At the checkers it was White in the Tracy Auto Sales, Braka Operating, Extreme Graphics, BSB Manufacturing, TCC, Craftmasters Powder Coating, racinwithneal.com, Centex Motorsports powered, Hughes Chassis taking home the win.

Kiphen Conquers Sportmod Field
Sid Kiphen (Gatesville) got an early gift in the 24-car IMCA Southern Sportmod feature when early leader, Tyler Fain broke under caution. Fain got out front after the initial start was waved off, for a mid-pack stack up. After a red for a blown motor, Fain was unable to refire handing the top spot to Kiphen. Kiphen made the most of it pulling away to huge lead over Terry Owen and track champ, Matt Mueller. At the finish Kiphen held a full straightaway margin over the rest of the field.

Sid Kiphen won the Southern Sportmod feature on Sunday
A huge pile up coming to the green flag quickly brought the 20-lap IMCA Southern Sportmod to a halt and complete start. Fain got a good jump when the green waved ahead of Kiphen, Owen, Nick Roberts and Matt Mueller. Mueller had just started to work on Roberts when a bumper on the track brought out a lap 1 yellow.
Back to green with Fain and Kiphen getting away, and Mueller getting by Roberts but a tire on track brought out another caution. Coming to take the green for the next try, Michael Tennison blew the motor and rolled to a stop. After the cleanup, Fain was not able to start and was pushed to his pits giving the lead to Kiphen.
Kiphen got away clean as the race restarted leaving Owen, Roberts, Mueller and Todd Bartlett in his wake. Mueller was finally able to get past Roberts for third on lap 4, with lots of rubbin’ going on in the pack. Coming to halfway Kiphen had built a half straightaway edge on Owen, Mueller, Roberts and Bartlett.
Bartlett and Doug Easterling were both able to get under Roberts for fourth and fifth, with Johnny Torres looking to make the same pass. Kiphen had a full straight on Owen, while Mueller, Bartlett and Easterling ran nose to tail. Kiphen was able to hold that advantage the final five laps to easily grab the victory in the K&S Backhoe Service, Southwest Racing Specialties, Centex Motorsports, Express Race Car.
“Racing is for fun, winning is a bonus,” said Kiphen. ““I would have liked to race with (Tyler) Fain. It would have been a good race. It took a few laps for my tires to come in and I was going to try anyway I could to get around him. I felt bad that he broke, but sometimes those things happen. It worked out nice for me, this time.”
“We made some adjustments to the car that it didn’t like on Friday and Saturday night. So we changed things again for today and the car was great. I couldn’t have asked for a better handling car.”
“We all know on Sunday at Abilene it’s a “draw” contest with the track going so dry slick. It seemed like some moisture came back on the bottom and it helped my car. There was also a groove of some oil from a blown motor that actually a good line to run, if that makes any sense.”
“I have to thank Kyle Bloodworth and Roy Ewing for coming along and helping me out this weekend. Roy hasn’t been racing since 2005 and he was having a blast. I think he was trying to drive from the grandstands.”

Killen King of Sunday Stock Cars
So people take their vacation to the Bahamas, or on a cruise, but racers will be racers and the Killen’s chose Texas for a ‘racing’ vacation. Tommy Killen (Des Moines, Ia.) made his trip pay off leading every lap of the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature event. T. Killen, who missed making the Friday and Saturday show, made some changes and drew a good number, starting on the pole. Jeff Turner gave T. Killen some pressure, while guarding second from Don Killen. After a late restart, T. Killen eased ahead of Turner by a few car lengths, holding that advantage, to take the win.

Tommy Killen was the I-Stock winner at Abilene on Sunday. Debbie Johnson photo.
When the green flag waved on the 20-car IMCA Stock Car feature with polesitter T. Killen out front ahead of Turner, D. Killen, Matt Guillaume and Nyle Godwin, with side by side racing back in the pack. Jason Batt broke out that pack getting by Cory Davis. Godwin gave away his top five spot after a spin in turn 4 to bring out a yellow on lap 5.
The top three eased away from Guillaume, Shane Priddy, Batt, Davis Keith White and Damon Murty, on the restart. Priddy began to look for a way by Guillaume low, but found no room as they came to halfway with T. Killen getting a bit of breathing room. It wasn’t long until the second pack reeled in the battle for second between Turner and D. Killen.
The evil track tire jumped on the track for a lap 14 caution, erasing T. Killen’s lead. Coming back to green it was a high speed game of bumper tag, but everyone survived. D. Killen clipped an infield tire on lap 17 knocking a hole in the radiator and was forced to pull off from third. A lap later Guillaume spun from third and got T-boned by Davis for a yellow.
T. Killen ran out to a three car advantage on Turner as the race resumed. Priddy was now putting some heat on Turner for second as the white flag was shown. T. Killen held his margin over to grab the victory in the Dons Tire & Auto, Bobs Transmissions, Cornwell Tools, L&G Graphics, Mid-States Motors, Killen Chassis.
“I just to be smooth and steady,” commented T. Killen. “This was the first feature I’ve made all week. We made some changes and changed the gear. I came down here with a 6.50 and had to drop down to a 5.83. That made the difference tonight I think.”
“We run on dirt back home instead of this clay. This track doesn’t take as much gear as the ones we race on. We run Des Moines on Friday night and Boone on Saturday night, then there’s Oskaloosa on Wednesday. Des Moines and Osky are big half mile tracks and Boone a 3/8th track.”
“There are some other little bull rings like this up there, Stuart is one of those. This is where we all learned to race at.”
“We’re just down on here on vacation. We just came to have fun.”

Watson Wins on Last Lap Pass
After losing the lead the past two nights on the final circuit, Des Moines, Iowa’s, John Watson took one of his own. Chase Neill led at the start of the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock main, with Bryan Sewell on his tail. Watson lurked in third until getting by Sewell with five to go and ran down Neill. As the lead duo took the white flag Watson ducked under Neill going into turn 1 and got by coming off turn 2. From there Watson was able to clear Neill on the back stretch and go on to the victory.
A huge pile up coming to green quickly brought the 20-car IMCA Hobby Stock main to a halt, bringing about a complete restart. Neill beat the field into turn 1 with a good start as Sewell, Jon Grindstaff, Chase Parson and Watson fell in line. Watson picked off Parson then Grindstaff for third bringing Parson along to fourth.
Watson ran down Neill and Sewell as the top three began to break away.
The lead trio quickly caught slower traffic before halfway and at the mid-point it was Neill, Sewell, Watson, Parson and Grindstaff. The leaders diced through traffic while exchanging bumper shots as they all got hung up on the low side behind slower cars.
A caution for an infield tire on the track was this time, a relief to the lead group, giving them clear track on the restart. Once back to green Neill got sideways with Sewell trying low, and Watson looking high, but all held on to their spots. With five to go the top five were all nose to tail until Watson got by Sewell. Parson followed through the hole, but Sewell retook the position in the next corner.
Watson closed up on the rear bumper of Neill, with an occasional tap to let him know he was there. As Neill and Watson came to take the white flag, Watson slipped inside going into turn 1 and came out with the lead. Watson held off Neill the final three quarters of a lap for the win in the Johns Tree Service, Supreme Tire & Auto, Yaws Auto Salvage, Supreme Lawn & Landscape, Dons Tire & Auto, Supreme Racing Stables. KMS, NB Golf Carts, Sta-Rite Transmissions, Nutz Graphics & Vinyl, GM Crate Motor, Big Daddy Race Car.
“There’s some pretty tough competition down here,” stated Watson. “I enjoy racing as close as we have been down here with all the last lap passes. Today you just had to wait for someone to bobble on a track like this, keep the car out of trouble and hope you didn’t get spun. I was able to get under him (Neill) and be first one into the corner.”
“Those guys were hugging the bottom pretty good, so their car must be handling. I was thinking if I could just to second place I’d have a chance to make another last lap pass. This Big Daddy’s Chassis will get in corner good, I can turn it and get a good bite coming off.”
“This is a brand new car that I got just after Christmas. We threw it together and put an old set up on it from our last car. We won eighteen features with it, so it must work. We were coming down here just to get some practice really and hoping for the best.”
“There are several of us working together on things, Shannon Anderson, Jamie Songer, Danny Watson and Curt Reed. We share a lot of knowledge between us and hope one of us can come away with a national point’s championship.”
