“Texas Trey” Mitchell has a Career Weekend PASS South Double Header

July 7, 2009

Trey Mitchell went into the PASS South double header looking to build on his career best third place finish at New Senoia Speedway just two weeks ago. He did just that with the #47 Magnum’s Oilfield Services Ford Fusion that was capable of sweeping the weekend. The Texas native had to settle for a solid top ten finish after having the car to beat in race one then did it the hard way to make it a career night in race two.

Friday night at Greenville-Pickens, Mitchell qualified in the twenty-second position. In the end though, he proved to be one of the main players in one of the most dramatic races in the PASS South series history. Mitchell slowly worked his way through the field knocking on the door of the top ten by lap fifty-six when the first caution of the night flew. Mitchell worked his way into fourth position by lap 100 and was running third with two laps to go when the fireworks began.

In a hard three way battle for the lead between Jeff Fultz, Corey Williams, and Mitchell; Mitchell dove to the inside of Williams in turn one, getting loose inside of Corey turning the #47 of Williams around in the corner. Both Mitchell and Williams were sent to the rear of the field. After three attempts at a green-white-checker, Mitchell fought his way back to a sixth place finish in the Firecracker 125.

“I was driving the wheels off the car trying to get to the front. I knew I had the car to beat and I was doing everything I could to get to the front. I hate that I got into Corey (Williams) and cost both of us a top three finish, maybe a win for me. I wanted to go apologize to him and his team but they wanted nothing of it. Hopefully in a few days when everyone isn’t so on edge I can tell him I’m sorry because I know 100% it was my fault. I was just going for the win and those kinds of things happen; what can you do we had the better car,” stated Mitchell after the race.

Sunday at Hickory Motor Speedway, Mitchell’s #47 Magnum’s Oilfield Services Ford Fusion was once again a hard charger as he weaved his way through traffic, not once but twice, en route to a career best second place finish in super late model competition.

Mitchell started sixteenth on the famous .363 mile oval. By lap sixty-eight, Mitchell was in the top ten when multiple cars, including Mitchell, spun to bring out the fifth caution of the night. However, as was the case Friday night, Mitchell’s car only got faster as the night went on as he moved into the top five with twenty laps to go becoming a major factor in the outcome once again.

On this night, Mitchell would be a benefactor of Ryan Blaney and Preston Peltier’s late race run-in, moving Mitchell up to third on the last restart of the night with five laps to go. Mitchell got a jump on the restart, moving up to second, but he was unable to reel in Justin Wakefield who took the checkered flag one car length ahead of Mitchell.

“My PR guy (Chris Ragle) has been on my case all year about qualifying better and before I went out and qualified today he told me, ‘since I was the last car to go out if there ever was a good opportunity to qualify up front this was it,’ and I let him down again. I don’t know, we just don’t qualify worth a darn but we always have good cars during the race and it’s starting to show. People are starting to say that Trey Mitchell is a guy we have to beat and that’s pretty cool. We just have one more spot to go before getting that first win and now after having a shot to win the last three races I know we will get one sooner or later,” added Mitchell.

Tim Crawley conquers ASCS in Rock ‘N Roll 50 to sweep series return to Riverside

July 5, 2009

Arkansas ace Tim Crawley completed a weekend sweep of the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters much-anticipated return to Riverside Speedway by winning Saturday night’s Rock ‘N Roll 50 championship feature event atop the storied ¼-mile gumbo clay oval.

The three-time Lucas Oil ASCS National champion wrestled the lead away from Justin Sturch on the 31st round en route to topping the first 50-lapper in series history, collecting the $6,000 winner’s share and a nifty Gibson Les Paul guitar event trophy with the VERSUS cameras catching all the action.

“What a great weekend!” Crawley exclaimed in victory lane. “Last night it was pretty much wide open, but tonight was more about being patient and waiting for the right time to make that move.”

After racing from eleventh to win Friday night’s preliminary feature, Crawley drew the pole position for Saturday night’s 50-lap finale. But, it was Justin Sturch gunning into the lead at the outset from the front row outside after racing his way into the six-car redraw by ranking among the night’s top two earners in passing points.

Sturch paced 30 rounds before Crawley snuck underneath entering turn one on the 31st circuit and never looked back, ultimately taking the checkered flag aboard Mike Ward’s McCarver-powered Boater Sports No. 88 Maxim with a comfortable straightaway advantage.

“Justin (Sturch) drove a strong race, but he left one hole open and I was there to plug it,” Crawley explained. “We owe David McCarver a lot of credit on this one, he busted his tail to have an engine ready for tonight.”

While Crawley cruised out front in the waning laps, event promoter Tony Bruce, Jr., slipped around Sturch in the closing circuits to snare runner-up honors in the Rider-powered Sundial Tee Shirts/AMC Plumbing No. 18 Maxim.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this worn out in my life,” the Kansas shoe commented upon climbing out of his mount on a muggy night next to the Mississippi River after piling 50 laps upon double duty as racer and promoter. “It’s worth it though, it was a great race and we look forward to doing this every year.”

Sturch, the reigning track champion at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway, settled for his best career Lucas Oil ASCS finish by taking third in his No. 9 entry, commenting that, “We were just getting way too loose there at the end, we’re satisfied with what we got. I was a little concerned that we were about to get freight-trained, but I think a lot of the other guys had the same problem.”

Gary Wright battled forward from 11th to earn fourth in Scott Brown’s ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service/Richwood Construction No. 9x Maxim to take over the series points lead by six markers over Jason Johnson and Shane Stewart, who are now tied for second.

Jesse Hockett battled amongst the lead handful of cars throughout, ultimately rounding out the top five in the RMS-powered VKCC Motorsports/Tom Buch No. 13 JEI.

Gary Taylor advanced a half dozen positions to finish sixth, with Jan Howard, Nick Smith, Shane Stewart and 23rd-starter Jason Johnson completing the top ten.

The feature event ran off with four yellow flags and two reds. The first yellow flew after two laps when third-starter Darren Long looped it in turn one. Two laps later, Paul McMahan came to a stop in turn three with engine woes.

Chad Corken tumbled in turn two on the ninth lap to bring out the first red flag, with Brady Bacon spinning to a stop in turn two with 16 laps in the books. After Dustin Morgan coasted to a stop with mechanical issues after 36 laps, Travis Rilat got upside down in turn two three laps later after running among the top five throughout. Terry Gray and Danny Wood were collected in the melee, with Gray forced pitside along with Rilat.

A pair of drivers used provisionals to start the main event, including reigning series champion Jason Johnson and Nebraska’s Jack Dover.

After tangling with Ricky Logan and flipping in turn four on the opening lap of the night’s sixth and final heat race, Johnson used his first provisional of the year after being unable to transfer from his “B” Main.

Struggling in his heat and “B” Main, Dover regrouped to race from 24th to eleventh to garner the R.E. Technologies Young Gun of the Race award, presented to the night’s top finisher under 21 years of age. Don Young claimed Friday night’s Young Gun award.

With 50 cars on hand for Saturday night’s Rock ‘N Roll 50, Wright, Marshall Skinner, Taylor, Jan Howard, Smith and Stewart topped heat race action. Matt Covington, Danny Wood and Paul McMahan won the “B” Mains.

Gavin Punch slipped too high exiting turn two in the second “B” Main and flipped after tagging the wall. Punch walked away uninjured, as did the night’s other flip victims.

Tommy Bryant bags ASCS Gulf South Sprint Car win at Texana Raceway Park

July 5, 2009

Tommy Bryant bagged his second American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region 25-lap feature win of the season as the series completed its two-night Fourth of July weekend spectacular at Texana Raceway Park on Saturday night.

Bryant battled past Friday night winner George White at the midway point on his way to victory lane in David Miller’s B&M Jr. No. 21T J&J.

While Bryant gridded the field outside the third row, third-starter Kent Lewis, Jr., disposed of front row starters Glenn Martin and White to lead the opening seven circuits before White surged back into the lead.

White became the race’s fourth different leader on the 17th round en route to victory lane, taking the checkered flag in front of 11th-starter Scottie McDonald and Tommy Bryant, who set the pace for a dozen laps along the way.

After pole starter Kent Lewis, Jr., paced led the opening three rounds, Bryant set the pace for the next ten rounds before Skip Wilson surged into the lead. Wilson was out front for just a lap before engine woes ended his run.

Bryant took back over the point and led two more rounds before White raced into the lead. Lewis, Jr., crossed the stripe behind the lead trio, with Aaron Reutzel padding his points lead by racing from 16th to round out the top five for his 12th consecutive top-ten run.

Channin Tankersley was sixth, with Eric Baldaccini, Greg Rilat, Larry Howery and Gary Watson completing the top ten.

Wilson, Watson, Ray Allen Kulhanek and Lewis, Jr., topped heat race action, with Darryl Wills and Reutzel winning the “B” Mains.

“Texas Trey” Mitchell carrying momentum into PASS South 4th of July double

July 1, 2009

As families and friends around the country prepare to celebrate our nation’s birth day with time off from work and relaxation, it is business as usual for the Trey Mitchell Racing team.

There will be no time off for Mitchell and his race team as they hope to carry the momentum of a career best finish in their last outing to a PASS South Fourth of July weekend double header this weekend.

Trey Mitchell's PASS South ride could use a sponsor on the hood...

Trey Mitchell's PASS South ride could use a sponsor on the hood...

The race weekend starts early for the team as they will travel to the paper clip shaped half mile Greenville-Pickens Speedway for the Firecracker 125 on Friday July 3rd to partake in what many consider to be one of the best Fourth of July weekend races to attend. Then after the day off to make the appropriate setup and handling changes, Mitchell and company will then compete Sunday July 5th at the abrasive Hickory Motor Speedway as part of the first ever Independence 150.

The double header will be a first for Mitchell when it comes to super late model competition but after having scored his first ever podium finish at New Senoia Speedway just a few weeks ago, the momentum of success is on his side.

“It felt good leaving Senoia last race with a third place finish. It’s just a whole new feeling when you finish in the top three; it pumped me up, it pumped my crew up and has us all really excited about racing this weekend. I know both places (Greenville and Hickory) real well and they’re two tracks I’ve had success with in the past so I have some pretty high hopes about coming away with some good finishes and hopefully building on that third place momentum we’ve got going,” said Mitchell.

The major object for the Texas native will be to keep his car in one piece at Greenville to be able to race Sunday at Hickory. The team wasn’t able to get a second #47 Ford Fusion completely ready to go for the double, forcing Mitchell to be extra cautious with his #47 Magnum’s Oilfield Service Ford Fusion. While Mitchell plans on being as cautious as possible he knows that with the ultra competitive field expected for both races he has to be on his game regardless.

“We weren’t quite able to get both cars ready for this weekend so I’ll have to be careful and make smart decisions. It won’t really change how I race that much other than maybe a little bit of extra give and take and I’m sure that everyone else has the same thoughts because they don’t want to end their chances of racing in Hickory either,” added Mitchell.

The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is set for its Eighth Annual Fourth of July Weekend Spectacular with two nights of action atop the high-banked, 5/16-mile Texana Raceway Park dirt oval in Edna, TX, this Friday and Saturday.

The pair of weekend events put the ASCS Gulf South Region at the midpoint of the 2009 season with 19-year-old Aaron Reutzel of Clute, TX, in the driver’s seat to become the series’ sixth different champion.

Riding an ASCS Gulf South record streak of eleven consecutive top-ten feature finishes aboard the Motor Mike-powered KCR Racing No. 87 Triple X, Reutzel has stretched out a 69 point advantage over 2005 series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek, who has topped two of the series most recent three events.

Tommy Bryant, who subbed impressively for Jerry Bell in this past weekend’s Lucas Oil ASCS National competition in Missouri, is currently ranked third, with 18-year-old Channin Tankersley and two-time and defending series champion Brandon Berryman rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Gulf South points includes Scottie McDonald, Kent Lewis, Jr., Greg Rilat, Jimmy Brooks and Gary Watson.

Also running with the ASCS Sprint Cars on Friday night will be the Texana Teen Mini-Stocks, Texana Classic Dwarfs, and the fan favorite Hot Stock Truck division. The local points competition is very close in each of these classes as the season has cleared the mid-point. Running with the Sprints on Saturday night will be the Texana Bombers, Limited Modifieds, and Modifieds.

Both nights of racing action are slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.

The high-banked, 5/16-mile Texana Raceway Park dirt oval is located two miles east of Edna, TX, on SR 111, then left on Haines Road. For more information, contact the track at 361-781-0411.

Lucas Oil ASCS Set for “Rock ‘N Roll 50″ at Riverside this weekend!

July 1, 2009

Fifty laps. It’s a distance that none can recall in any past ASCS National event.

But, if all goes according to plan, that’s what is in store as the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters makes its grand return to Riverside Speedway in West Memphis, AR, with this weekend’s Rock ‘N Roll 50.

Two full nights of the nation’s most intense Sprint Car racing, both to be taped for later broadcast on VERSUS, will culminate with Saturday night’s $6,000 to win Rock ‘N Roll 50 championship feature event. The fop four finishers from Friday night’s preliminary main event will lock into Saturday night’s six-car feature redraw.

“It’s going to be interesting, that’s for sure,” event promoter and Lucas Oil ASCS contender Tony Bruce, Jr., commented. “There are so many things than can change in those last 10 or 20 laps, I think the fans are really going to be in for a great show.”

The two-night stand atop the storied ¼-mile gumbo clay oval marks the series first Riverside stop since 2005. A tour staple from 1995 to 2005, the entire facility has been revamped in the past couple of years with a racing surface conducive to top-flight Sprint Car racing reportedly the norm thus far in 2009.

While a stellar field of drivers will vie for Rock ‘N Roll 50 bragging rights atop the Mid-South oval, the two nights will play a major role in the series championship points chase. A $60,000 share of the $250,000 point fund awaits the champion at year’s end.

Defending series champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA, and Bixby, OK, native Shane Stewart enters the weekend’s action deadlocked atop the series point charts, with four-time series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, just ten points back in third.

Johnson is the only repeat winner in Lucas Oil ASCS action this year, adding this past weekend’s Daniel McMillin Memorial triumph at Missouri’s Lake Ozark Speedway to a Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals victory in March.

Stewart earned a Devil’s Bowl Spring Nationals prelim win in March, while Gary Wright picked off a non-points win in ASCS Speedweek action.

The lead trio of Johnson, Stewart and Wright have opened up a bit of a gap over the rest of the Lucas Oil ASCS pack, with California native Paul McMahan 76 points off the lead pace in fourth.

McMahan, also leading the Brodix Rookie of the Year chase, is just seven points ahead of fellow rookie contender Jack Dover, the 19-year-old hailing from Springfield, NE, that topped the Steve King Memorial in Jetmore, KS, on Memorial Day weekend.

Ranked sixth, just one point behind Dover, is Norman, OK, veteran shoe Danny Wood, with Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Nick Smith and Forney, Texas’ Travis Rilat close behind as only eleven points separate the five drivers ranking fourth through eighth (McMahan, Dover, Wood, Smith and Rilat).

ASCS Speedweek champion Tim Crawley of Benton, AR, and Liberal, KS, ace Tony Bruce, Jr., are tied for ninth entering the weekend. Wingless convert Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, OK, is just outside the top ten in eleventh, with Sean McClelland (Tulsa, OK), Jesse Hockett (Warsaw, MO), Trey Robb (Newcastle, OK) and Aaron Berryhill (Broken Arrow, OK) rounding out the top 15 as 26 different entries have competed in all five points-paying events thus far.

Others trying to crack the top 15 in points include recent Riverside winner Gary Taylor (Snohomish, WA), Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK), Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX), Matt Covington (Glenpool, OK), Seth Bergman (Snohomish, WA), Gavin Punch (Collinsville, OK), Ricky Logan (Little Rock, AR), Darren Long (Elida, OH), Chad Corken (Highlands Ranch, CO), Donnie Ray Crawford (Tulsa, OK) and the No. 85 combo in which Tommy Bryant (Conroe, TX) successfully filled in for Jerry Bell (Garland, TX) this past weekend.

Averaging 55.6 cars per event thus far in 2009, this weekend marks the second of five consecutive weekends of series competition. Following Riverside’s Rock ‘N Roll 50, the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters moves on to South Dakota’s I-90 Speedway on July 11, Washington’s Grays Harbor Raceway Park on July 17-18 and then Oregon’s Cottage Grove Speedway on July 24-25.
