Johnny Bone, Jr, goes wire-to-wire in Louisiana in fourth leg of USMTS Southern Speedweek

June 14, 2009

The USMTS Southern Series invaded the Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, La., Friday night for the fourth of six rounds of racing action comprising the 3rd Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek.

For the second straight year, Johnny Bone Jr. of Pea Ridge, Ark., drew the pole position for the 35-lap Sunoco “A” Main, and for the second straight year led every lap en route to a $2,000 payday at the 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval.

“It’s scary when you’re up front and you have to guess where to put the car,” Bone said in victory lane. “The car was good and the track was in pretty good shape — there were plenty of lines to run and I could hear somebody behind me.”

That somebody was Chris Henigan of Marshall, Texas, who hounded Bone the entire distance but had to settle for his second runner-up finish in three nights.

A restart with four laps to go set up a shoot-out to the finish line with Rodney Sanders nipping eight-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock at the stripe. Two-time Speedweek winner and current USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes came from the 12th starting spot to finish fifth.

Bryan Rowland raced from 15th on the 26-car starting grid to grab sixth and earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award. AFCO Pole Award winner B.J. Robinson finished seventh, Chad Wheeler was eighth, Randy Timms hung on for a ninth-place finish and Scott Green rounded out the top-10 finishers.

While Hughes maintained his points lead in the East Region with 739 markers, while Bone jumped ahead of Shryock with one point to spare (728 to 727). Sanders is fourth (713), followed by Steven Whiteaker Jr. (664), Henigan (657), Steve Holzkamper (643), Jack Sullivan (639) and Morgan Bagley (610), with Dereck Ramirez and Robinson tied for the tenth position with 601 points each.

The Fast Shafts Challenge bonus money remained safe after Friday’s show and is now worth $500 on Saturday night at the Drew County Speedway if that driver is utilizing a nine-inch Ford rearend. If the award is not won Saturday, the bounty will climb to $600 For Sunday’s finale at the Boothill Speedway.

“Grandpa” Gary Wright romps in ASCS Sprint Car Speedweek round five at State Fair Speedway

June 13, 2009

Prior to Friday night, the 17th Annual F&J Construction ASCS Speedweek featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters had been an ordeal that Gary Wright would just as soon forget.

Gary Wright (9x) romped at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on Friday night.

Gary Wright (9x) romped at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on Friday night.

“The Texan” changed that in short order though by romping to victory lane in Friday night’s 25-lap main event atop State Fair Speedway’s 3/8-mile oval to become the fourth different winner in as many Speedweek events after the previous night’s card at Devil’s Bowl Speedway was washed out.

And, to top it off, the six-time ASCS Speedweek champion got some big news earlier in the night.

Gary Wright is joined in ASCS Speedweek victory lane at State Fair Speedway by daughters Lauren (right), who will soon make "The Texan" a Grandpa, and Chelsea (left).

“I just found it I’m gonna be a Grandpa, so this is a special night to win one,” Wright revealed to the crowd in victory lane. “My daughter Lauren and my son-in-law Nick (Smith) just found out yesterday they’re having their first.”

While collecting four assorted ASCS Regional wins this season, the four-time Lucas Oil Sprint Car champion had been denied a National caliber victory thus far.

After starting sixth though, Wright needed just nine rounds to chase down early leader Channin Tankersley and then checked out to eventually take his 30th career ASCS Speedweek checkered flag with a full half-lap advantage in the lightning-quick, non-stop affair.

“Finally!” a relieved Wright commented as he climbed out of Scott Brown’s ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service/Richwood Construction No. 9x Maxim. “It’s been a tough week. We had a really good car tonight though, it couldn’t have been much better.”

Up to third behind pole starter Tankersley and front row outside starter Eric Baldaccini in the early rounds, Wright took second away from Baldaccini on the sixth circuit and quickly began reeling in the 18-year-old ASCS Gulf South contender.

Wright raced by Tankersley in turns three and four on the ninth round and immediately disappeared into a maze of lapped traffic. When it was all said and done, Wright took the checkered flag with eight lapped cars and a half-lap separating himself from runner-up Brady Bacon.

Bacon had worked forward from eighth in the Wesmar-powered Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple-X and wrangled second away from Baldaccini in the closing circuits. The 19-year-old hailing from Broken Arrow, OK, took over the ASCS Speedweek points lead in the process.

Baldaccini, the 2008 Brodix Rookie of the Year, claimed the show position in Harry Baldaccini’s Smiley’s Racing Products No. 4 Maxim, with defending Lucas Oil Sprint Car champion Jason Johnson advancing a half-dozen spots to snare fourth in Lanny Row’s Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports No. 41 Eagle.

Travis Rilat rounded out the top five in the Shark-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X, with Paul McMahan keeping the Speedweek title within his sights by finishing sixth. McMahan goes into Saturday night’s finale just four points off of Bacon’s lead pace.

Matt Clevenger posted his second consecutive seventh-place run to launch into a potential money-paying points position, with Tankersley, Gavin Punch and Nick Smith completing the top ten.

Bacon, Clevenger, McMahan, Rilat and Punch topped heat race action for the 41-car field with Danny Wood and Tim Crawley winning the twin “B” Mains. After climbing from 20th to eleventh, Crawley enters Saturday’s finale just six points behind Bacon.

The 17th Annual F&J Construction ASCS Speedweek featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters concludes on Saturday night at Oklahoma’s Lawton Speedway, with racing action set to go green at 8:00 p.m.

Jason Hughes emerges in USMTS Southern Speedweek thriller at Ark-La-Tex Speedway

June 12, 2009

Last year the USMTS Southern Series made it’s debut at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., with much fanfare coming into the event. High winds and a blazing hot sun contributed to a darkened dry racetrack early in the program that ended with a follow-the-leader freight train around the top of the track during the feature race.

Thursday night’ affair at Gene Boyter’s quarter-mile bullring couldn’t have been more different.

Rain the night before and throughout the early morning deluged the facility, but Boyter’s crew worked and shaped the clay continually up until race time. What resulted was a smooth surface with ever-changing multiple grooves that produced one of the most thrilling main events of the season.

16-year old Tyler Townsend from Longview sat on the pole and battled for the lead most of the race in his #12t Modified

16-year old Tyler Townsend from Longview battled for the lead most of the race in his #12t Modified

Sixteen-year-old Texan Tyler Townsend earned the AFCO Pole Award by racing from sixth to first in the sixth and final heat race for the 51 entries, then redrew the pole position for the 40-lap Sunoco “A” Main on the third of six nights comprising the 3rd Annual Southern Speedweek.

16-year old Tyler Townsend from Longview sat on the pole and battled for the lead most of the race

Unfortunately for Townsend, joining him on the front row was defending USMTS Southern Series Champion Jason Hughes, who was seeking his eighth win of the season and second in three nights of Speedweek.

Undeterred, Townsend jumped out to lead the first lap with Hughes in pursuit. While Townsend hugged the inside lane, Hughes continued his charge around the high side of the racetrack as the two battled side by side for the first ten laps.

Fresh off a victory in the USRA Southern Limited Modified feature that preceded the USMTS Southern Series nightcap, Timothy Culp of nearby West Monroe moved in to challenge Townsend on lap 12 while Hughes faded back into a fight for third with Lee Patton.

On lap 15, Culp completed the pass around Townsend to take the lead and began to open up a four-car-length advantage over the next five laps. Townsend, however, began reeling Culp back in as the teenage duo came into lapped traffic while Patton disposed of Hughes, who now had his hands full with Rodney Sanders.

Culp made contact with a lapped car on lap 31, which sent the backmarker spinning to a stop in turn 2 to bring out the first of four late-race caution flags that kept the field tightly bunched for the remaining nine orbits.

On the restart, Culp again shot out to a big lead with Patton moving around Townsend for second while Hughes began gaining ground using the top groove. One lap later, Culp’s machine belched a cloud of smoke as engine failure dashed his hopes of winning his first USMTS Southern Series race.

With Patton now on the point, cautions for separate spins on laps 34 and 35 slowed the pace with Townsend challenging the leader on the low side while Hughes worked the outside groove. Hughes inched ahead of Patton to lead the 37th lap before the final yellow flag waved to set up a green-white-checkered finish.

Hughes, who looked to be out of the picture at the mid-point of the race, rode the rim over the final two laps to take the checkered flag and pocket the $2,000 top prize. Sanders followed Hughes around the high side and beat Patton by a nose to claim the runner-up paycheck. Kelly Shryock, who started 12th, took the fourth spot with about a foot of bumper to spare over Townsend.

Finishing sixth through tenth, respectively, were Scott Green, Randy Timms, Jason Armstrong, Chris Henigan and Dereck Ramirez.

The KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award went to Bryan Rowland, who started 22nd and finished 12th.

With the win, Hughes took over the top spot in the East Region points standings for the USMTS Southern Series, and leads Shryock by just nine points (648 to 639). Johnny Bone Jr. dropped two spots to third with 625 points, while Sanders moved up two spots to fourth with 615 markers. Wednesday night’s winner Steven Whiteaker Jr. is fifth with 604, followed by Steve Holzkamper (598), Jack Sullivan (589), Morgan Bagley (565), Henigan (561) and Ramirez (547).

The family feud continues in the battle for the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year Award. After failing to qualify for Thursday’s main event, Wes Armstrong now leads his younger brother, Jason, by just five points (227 to 222). Chad Davis is third with 193 points, followed by Kyle Schmidt (191) and Kevin Sustaire (180).

FRIDAY, JUNE 12 … FAST TRAX SPEEDWAY, CHATHAM, LA.

The Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, La., is the site of event #4 on the USMTS Southern Speedweek schedule. Bone captured the Speedweek win last year with Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr., Shryock and Elias Anderson finishing second through fifth.

Among the favorites from the local racers to challenge for the checkers are points leader Dougie Murphrey, Randy Thompson, Kyle Pleasant, Patton, Bud Mullins, Kent Hollingsworth, Jody Davidson, Sammy Knighten, Chase Del Rio, Richard Roberts and others.

The wide straight-aways and corners are popular for producing two- and three-wide racing, which makes this a very competitive short track.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstand gates swing open at 5:00, hot laps take to the track at 6:30 and the racing action kicks off at 7:00.

USRA Southern Limited Modifieds will also be on the racing card going for $500 to win.

The Fast Trax Speedway is a 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 4.0 miles southeast of SR 34 on SR 4 (NSR). For more information, call 318-249-2443 or visit www.fasttraxspeedway.net online.

The Drew County Speedway in Monticello, Ark., plays host to round 5 of USMTS Southern Speedweek on Saturday, with the six-race swing wrapping up on Sunday at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La.

Texan James Buescher back at Win-Tron Racing controls for ARCA race at Michigan

June 12, 2009

James Buescher will have a busy weekend at Michigan International Speedway. In addition to running the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event on Saturday, Buescher will return to the controls of the No. 32 Wolfpack Rentals TOYOTA Camry for Win-Tron Racing in the ARCA RE/MAX Series for Friday’s Racing for Wildlife 200.

And while the pressure to run two races on the same weekend can get to any driver, there’s even more pressure for Buescher on Friday night as the Plano, Texas, native has won in both of his starts this year for the Lakeville, Minnesota based team.

In February, Buescher powered his way through all the carnage and captured his first superspeedway win. Last month in his first start since the Daytona triumph, Buescher went back to victory lane at Kentucky Speedway recording his third career victory in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Now Buescher sets his sights on Michigan international Speedway and its two-mile oval looking to make it three-for-three. Ironically, Buescher has never competed in a race at the famed Irish Hills track which is a similar story to the Bluegrass track of Kentucky Speedway.

The team did however participate in the open-test at Michigan International Speedway last month with satisfactory results. Not 100 percent pleased with the performance, the team went back to work on their Camry and feel that with their motor and the adjustments made to the car, Buescher will have no problem finding himself in the running.

“James is confident about this weekend,” said Nate Thiesse, co-owner and general manager of Win-Tron Racing. “We tested a couple weeks ago and it didn’t exactly go as planned but we know that when we come back to the race, we are always much better. It’s not going to be an easy task on Friday, but we’ll be ready, that’s for sure.”

Since 2007, Buescher has 16 career ARCA RE/MAX Series starts with three victories at USA International Speedway (March 2007), Daytona International Speedway (February 2009) and Kentucky Speedway (May 2009). He has six top-five finishes and 10 top-10 efforts to his credit. Buescher holds one pole position at Talladega Superspeedway in October 2008. He had led 266 laps in eight RE/MAX Series events.

Entering Michigan, Win-Tron Racing remains second in the ARCA RE/MAX Series owner’s standings after seven races. Unofficially, Car owner Kevin Cywinski is 15 markers behind over first place car owner Jessica Sharp (No. 6). The team retained their spot from their last outing at Pocono Raceway after Matt Merrell finished fifth.

The Racing for Wildlife 200 (100 laps / 200 miles) is the eighth of 21 events on the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. The 28th ARCA race at Michigan International Speedway is a two-day show. Practice begins Thursday, June 11 with a two hour practice session planned from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Menards Pole by Ansell qualifying is set for later in the day slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. The event will take the green flag on Friday, June 12 shortly after 5:15 p.m. The event will live on SPEED. The race will also be broadcasted live through the ARCA Racing Network (ARN) online at arcaracing.com. All times are local.

Further information on Win-Tron Racing is available by visiting win-tronracing.com or contacting Nate Thiesse at 952.469.1839 or nate@win-tronracing.com.

Thunderhill Raceway Super Stock driver Clint LaFont sets his sights on the ASA National Championship

June 12, 2009

Clint LaFont will be heading into this weekend’s ASA A-Line Super Stock races at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) with a definite goal in mind – positioning himself to stay at the top of the West Region point standings for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship title.

So far, LaFont seems to be following in the footsteps of last year’s track and national champion, Cary Stapp, who also raced with the THR Super Stocks.

LaFont is currently leading the ASA A-Line Super Stock points’ chase at Thunderhill Raceway, which makes him eligible for the national title. Going into the race this Saturday (June 13), LaFont holds a slim 35-point lead over Shawn Paul Lehman (Manchaca, TX).

On the regional level, LaFont’s point average is 1.2202, and he’s followed closely by Russ Ward from Meridian Speedway (Meridian, ID) with a 1.1362 point average. LaFont has finished in the Top 3 positions in all six of the feature races so far this year – capturing two wins along the way.

LaFont is excited about leading the regional standings going into the midpoint of the 2009 season, but he’s also a bit cautious about the rest of the season.

“I’m not going to get a big head about it,” commented LaFont. “I’m excited that we’re in contention for the national title at this point in the season, and I plan to continue what I’ve already been doing so far this year. When I’m racing, I block out everything except my focus on finishing the race – purposely not thinking about anything else like points or championships.”

This 26-year-old driver from Volente, TX, has been racing with the Super Stocks since 2006, and he knows he has to race cleanly to stay on top of his game.

“Between my full-time job and also my part-time job as a CNC Programming Instructor at Austin Community College, I have very little time to work on my car,” added LaFont. “So, one of my main goals is to drive the car onto the trailer at the end of the night with nothing more than tire marks on the door.”

While LaFont knows that he needs to stay on top in the track point standings to compete for the national title, he realizes that he faces even more challenges on a national level.

“I know I’m up against a lot of good racers across the country, but I don’t know them personally or their racing abilities. Although I really don’t know what to expect, I’m very grateful to ASA for giving us the opportunity to compete for a national title.”

LaFont is sponsored by Navy Master Chief John Matheson and his wife Sandi who support “Go Navy.” LaFont’s Crew Chief and fellow competitor is his dad, Bobby LaFont. The elder LaFont is a racing legend and well-respected driver at Thunderhill Raceway, who also competes in the Super Stock class.

“My dad got me into racing,” said LaFont. “I started out as his Crew Chief, making all of the critical chassis adjustments, and then I decided I wanted to drive. Dad has guided me through everything associated with racing, and I’ve tried to learn his driving style by watching him methodically work his way up through the field without taking anyone out intentionally. I believe consistency and clean, hard racing will be keys to winning the championship.”

The ASA A-Line Super Stocks will be part of the Kyle Area Chamber of Commerce Night at the Races at Thunderhill Raceway this Saturday – along with the TSRS (Texas Super Racing Series) Late Models, TSRS Allison Legacys and the Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas. The racing action will also feature the Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks, Mini Stocks and NasKarts.

Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. Qualifying is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by heat races at 6 p.m. and opening ceremonies and feature races immediately afterwards.

Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, on the access road just north of San Marcos (TX) near Yarrington Road (Exit #210). For more information on Thunderhill Raceway, visit www.thunderhillraceway.com.

Corpus Christi’s Steven Whiteaker, Jr, triumphs in wild USMTS Southern Series tilt in Arkansas

June 11, 2009

Steven Whiteaker Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, combined skill, luck and timing Wednesday night to score his career-first USMTS Southern Series main event win at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

Steve Whiteaker celebrates his first USMTS win

Steve Whiteaker celebrates his first USMTS win

Starting deep in the field in the 17th spot, the 21-year-old Whiteaker made it known early on that he wanted to stand out from the crowd. While most of the Modifieds on the track were running a low or middle line on the multi-grooved quarter-mile, Whiteaker chose to chew away at the top side of the racing surface.

Stever Whiteaker, Jr won his first USMTS feature last night at I-30 Speedway

Stever Whiteaker, Jr won his first USMTS feature last night at I-30 Speedway

The strategy paid off as Whiteaker had no cars to contend with in front of him — only those cars to his left as he passed them.

Jared Landers drew the pole position for the 40-lap Sunoco “A” Main, and threatened to turn the show into a yawner up front as he stretched out his lead to nearly a full straight-away a few laps into the race, then again after a couple of restarts during the middle stages of the contest.

With eight laps to go, Whiteaker began battling with AFCO Pole Award winner Steve Holzkamper for what looked like a certain runner-up finish for one of the two as Landers had checked out. But two laps later, USMTS Southern Series East Region points leader Jack Sullivan came to a stop on the track to bring out the caution flag and tighten up the pack.

As the green flag waved for the final six-lap shootout, Landers led the field into the first turn. Holzkamper closed in on his bumper while Whiteaker flashed by on the outside as they raced down the back-stretch.

With a right rear tire going flat, Landers slowed coming out of the fourth turn. Unable to get off the track, the oncoming pack scattered while several cars made contact with Landers coming to rest at the entrance of turn 1 and nearly tipping over on his side.

Holzkamper, who came into the night’s event ranked second in the East Region points standings, was part of the crash that sent both he and Landers to the pits and left Whiteaker on the point for the race’s final restart.

With Chris Henigan using the low line, Whiteaker stayed true to the top side of the racing surface and held off the fellow Texan to collect the $2,000 top prize and his first USMTS Southern Series checkered flag.

Another Lone Star State ace, Morgan Bagley, finished third with Garrett Durrett coming home fourth.

Earlier in the program, Kelly Shryock finished third in the third and final Real Racing Wheels “B” Main to earn the final transfer spot in the main event. Finishing fourth in the same race was Tuesday’s feature winner at the Tri-State Speedway, Jason Hughes, who had to use a provisional to join the feature race starting line-up.

Despite starting 22nd, Shryock clawed his way to a fifth-place finish in the main event and passed one more competitor than Whiteaker to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Dustin Hyde was sixth, Johnny Bone Jr. grabbed seventh, Mike Bowers was eighth and Hughes raced from 23rd on grid to finish ninth.

Mike Sellers used a track provisional to get the 26th and final starting spot and raced to a tenth-place finish.

The East Region points got shaken up with Sullivan and Holzkamper both recording a DNF in the main event. Bone now leads the rankings by just six points (565 to 559) over Sullivan and Whiteaker, who are tied for second. Hughes is fourth with 546 points, followed by Shryock (544), Holzkamper (534), Rodney Sanders (518), Bagley (515), Henigan (486) and Dereck Ramirez (469).

Fifty-two drivers representing eight different States signed in to do battle Wednesday night in the second of six straight nights comprising the 3rd Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek.

The Fast Shafts Challenge bonus money carries over to Thursday night’s event at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., and will now be worth $300 if the winning driver is utilizing a nine-inch Ford rearend. If the award is not won, Thursday’s prize will grow to $300 and so on, with a possible $600 bonus at Sunday’s USMTS Southern Speedweek finale. To learn more about Fast Shafts, call toll-free 800-622-6617 or visit www.fastshafts.com online.

Landers came up just six laps short of collecting the Fast Shafts Challenge money, and is expected to try again Thursday night.

Wednesday’s was again on WatchModsLive.com, which broadcasted live real-time video footage from the event. All remaining USMTS Southern Series events will also be broadcast live on the World Wide Web. To learn more or to sign-up to watch all the action from the comfort of your own living room, check out www.WatchModsLive.com on the World Wide Web.

THURSDAY, JUNE 11 … ARK-LA-TEX SPEEDWAY, VIVIAN, LA.

Tomorrow (Thursday, June 11) will find the tireless touring titans at Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La. In the first-ever USMTS Southern Series show here last year, first-time USMTS competitor Duke Whiseant of Texarkana, Ark., took home the hardware over Johnny Bone Jr., Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr. and Steve Holzkamper.

Local aces Odie Green, Justin Sprayberry, Mike Washburn, Dick Haynes, Dwayne Brown, Greg Garrett, Lee Patton, Tippy Bickham, Jason Ingalls, Michael Robertson and others are expected to make a statement in protecting their home turf against the invading USMTS forces.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstand gates swing open at 5:00, hot laps take to the track at 7:00 and the racing action kicks off at 7:30. Factory Stocks will also be racing for $300 to win, along with the USRA Southern Limited Modifieds going for $500 to win.

Beginning at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway event, the final four events will all feature the USRA Southern Limited Modifieds racing for $500 to win each night.

The Ark-La-Tex Speedway a 1/4-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 0.6 mile south of SR 2 on SR 1, then 0.7 mile west on Airport Rd., then 2.2 miles south on Boyter Lane Rd. (ESR). ‘Zach Attack’ in ASCS Speedweek round three; Chappell wins wild one

June 10, 2009

Zach Chappell became the third different winner in as many legs of the 17th Annual F&J Construction ASCS Speedweek featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters by topping Tuesday night’s 30-lap feature at Creek County Speedway.

Zach Chappell became the 3rd different winner in as many legs of the 17th Annual ASCS Speedweek

The Talala, OK, racer paced the final four circuits after racing forward from 16th in the wildly unpredictable affair atop the tight ¼-mile bullring to capture his second career ASCS Speedweek triumph and first ASCS win since a Sooner score in July of 2005.

“It feels good to win this, the team’s really been working hard and they had this one coming,” Chappell commented after his triumph aboard the family-owned Legend’s Bar-B-Q & Steak Joint No. 50z Maxim.

After Tony Bruce, Jr., and Seth Bergman enjoyed stints at the head of the pack, Chappell became the race’s fourth and final leader when Tim Crawley surrendered the point with a cut right rear in the final handful of laps. And, it was a cut that was by all indications inflicted by Chappell.

“I don’t like to race like that and sure didn’t mean to get into him,” Chappell explained. “I had a real good run off of two and tried to cut down into three to try to get around and I guess I clipped his right rear. It’s not the way we wanted it. But, hey, we’ll take it.”

Following a red flag stoppage after 20 rounds for Donnie Ray Crawford’s flip down the backstretch, Chappell had turned the heat up on Crawley, who had taken the lead away from Washington’s Bergman on the 16th round.

Chasing Crawley around the bottom of one and two and then challenging on the top side of turns three and four, the pair raced side-by-side several times before the slightest of contact entering turn three on the 27th round sent Crawley coasting to a stop at the top of turn four.

“I drove the exact same line I’d driven every lap before that, it’s not like I moved up the track,” Crawley commented after being credited with a 15th place finish rather than collecting his second win of the week.

With Crawley sidelined, Chappell led the final circuits to collect the win in front of Bergman, who held off Missouri’s Brian Brown for runner-up honors.

Piloting Steven Bergman’s Shark-powered Corridor Electric No. 23 Eagle, Bergman had outdueled Crawley for second in the early rounds and then took command when Tony Bruce, Jr., spun out of the lead on the 12th lap.

But, a lap after Shane Stewart spun from contention on the 15th circuit, Crawley battled past Bergman and set sail. “We were good, but Tim found the bottom of the track before we did,” Bergman explained.

Advancing from the 12th starting position, Brown kept his nose clean to collect show honors in his Creek County debut aboard the Super Clean No. 21 Maxim.

After losing a torsion arm while leading his heat race, Brady Bacon raced from the tail of the “B” Main to earn a transfer position and then charged from 23rd to claim fourth in the Wesmar-powered Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple X.

Originally slated to start eleventh, Paul McMahan started tailback after getting collected in an opening lap melee that sidelined four cars (Gary Taylor, Eric Baldaccini, Kenneth Walker and Forrest Sutherland) and raced back through the field to round out the top five aboard the Wesmar-powered J&D Motorsports No. 3d Maxim.

Tony Bruce, Jr., who paced the opening eleven rounds before looping it off the top of turn two, raced back through the field to salvage a sixth place finish and retain the ASCS Speedweek points lead.

Ninth-row starters Matt Clevenger and Sean McClelland were seventh and eighth, respectively, with fourth heat race tusslers Nick Smith and Dustin Morgan advancing from “B” Main action to complete the top ten in the feature.

Jason Johnson, Claud Estes, Baldaccini and Danny Wood topped heat race action for the 31-car field, with Smith making a move around Morgan to win the 12-lap “B” Main. Defending ASCS Speedweek champ Jason Johnson spun in turn four on the second attempt to start the feature and was forced pitside with a flat front tire, while Wood finished 13th after looping it in turn two while running among the top five in the early stages of the feature.

Crawley and Sapulpa’s Danny Smith both got upside down in a double tumble in the night’s second heat race. Smith was done for the night while Crawley continued on with minimal damage to earn the 13th starting position for the feature.

After battling from sixth to take the lead in the third heat, six-time ASCS Speedweek champion Gary Wright slipped too high in turn two and dumped his mount after tagging the wall. After a “B” Main spin, Wright charged into a transfer position in the final rounds before making an early exit from the feature.

The 17th Annual F&J Construction ASCS Speedweek featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters resumes with Round Four at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on Thursday night before moving on to Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway on Friday and then concluding on Saturday night at Lawton Speedway.

Jason Hughes cruises to checkers in USMTS ‘Southern Speedweek’ lidlifter

June 10, 2009

For the seventh time this season, Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., found himself in victory lane in a USMTS Southern Series event — this time in the USMTS Southern Speedweek opener presented by Schoenfeld Headers on Tuesday night at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla.

Hughes has been at the top of his game every race night in 2009, and at the top of the rankings in most categories as well.

Tuesday night at the 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval located just a few feet from the Arkansas-Oklahoma border, Hughes was dominant from the time the mud started flying until the dust had settled following a wire-to-wire win in the 30-lap Sunoco “A” Main.

After claiming his fourth AFCO Pole Award of the season, Hughes drew the outside front row starting spot for the main event for the third time this year and won from the spot for the third time.

Johnny Bone Jr. closed the gap on Hughes in the final laps of Tuesday’s nightcap, but had to settle for the runner-up paycheck ahead of polesitter William Gould.

Garrett Durrett finished fourth and USMTS Southern Series East Region points leader Jack Sullivan rounded out the top-5. Sixth through tenth, respectively, went to Chris Henigan, Rodney Sanders, Johnny Scott, Shane Hebert and Kelly Shryock.

The KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award went to Steve Holzkamper, who started 17th and finished 11th in the feature race.

Sullivan’s solid top-5 keeps him atop the East Region standings with a 27-point cushion over Holzkamper (509 to 482). Bone is third with 479 points, followed by Hughes (472), Sanders (463), Shryock (443), Steven Whiteaker Jr. (442), Morgan Bagley (423), Dereck Ramirez (403) and Henigan (391).

Fifty-four drivers representing eight different States signed in to do battle Tuesday night in the first of six straight nights comprising the 3rd Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek.

Tuesday’s show was also the debut of WatchModsLive.com, which broadcasted nearly six hours of live real-time video footage from the event. All remaining USMTS Southern Series events will also be broadcast live on the World Wide Web. To learn more or to sign-up to watch all the action from the comfort of your own living room, check out www.WatchModsLive.com on the World Wide Web.

The Fast Shafts Challenge bonus money carries over to Wednesday night’e event at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., and will now be worth $200 if the winning driver is utilizing a nine-inch Ford rearend. If the award is not won, Thursday’s prize will grow to $300 and so on, with a possible $600 bonus at Sunday’s USMTS Southern Spedweek finale. Johnny Bone Jr. pocketed the $5,000 top prize back in March during the 10th Annual Topless Modified Nationals at the Clay family’s famous facility, and the Pea Ridge, Ark., resident looks to add another $2,000 to his take home pay from the quick quarter-mile bullring this season.

Jack Sullivan captured last year’s USMTS Southern Speedweek event at his home track as he hopes to continue his momentum toward the USMTS Southern Series title on familiar ground.

Local aces such as Jeremy Kuykendall, David Baser, Mike Sellers, Randy Weaver, Robert Baker, Scooter Scruggs, Jayson Hefley, Chad Mallett, Emmett Lawson, Chris Carter and others to cheer on to take home the top prize.

Race fans will get an added bonus and drivers get an added challenge as NASCAR fan favorite and television personality Kenny Wallace. “The Hermanator” will join the action on the track and will also be available to sign autographs for the fans at the I-30 Speedway.

ASCS Speedweek moves on to Creek County tonight, 6/9/09

June 9, 2009

It all started at Creek County Speedway way back in the day. Tuesday night, the American Sprint Car Series revisits its origins.

Located just southwest of Tulsa, Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, OK, is set to host the third round of the 17th Annual F&J Construction ASCS Speedweek featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters on Tuesday night, with racing action set to go green at 7:00 p.m.

The ¼-mile Creek County Speedway clay oval was the site of the initial ASCS events in 1992 and also hosted the inaugural ASCS Speedweek event in 1993. Now, the track that features non-stop action is ready for its 12th Speedweek event.

Tuesday will also mark the third leg of the inaugural Lucas Oil ASCS2 Micro Sprint Speedweek.

In the ASCS ranks, Tim Crawley topped Friday night’s 30-car field at Texarkana 67 Speedway with Tony Bruce, Jr., besting a 40-car field at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway on Saturday night.

Hailing from Liberal, KS, Bruce escaped the opening two nights of Speedweek competition with a two-point edge over 2004 Speedweek champ Crawley. Vying for a first championship of any kind, Bruce’s fourth-place run at Texarkana gives him the edge thus far over Crawley, who rallied from twelve rows deep to finish fifth at I-30 Speedway.

Defending ASCS Speedweek champion Jason Johnson, who has topped two of the last three Speedweek events at Creek County Speedway, enters Tuesday’s action just 12 points off of Bruce’s pace as he takes aim at a third Speedweek crown.

Tulsa’s Sean McClelland has posted a pair of top-ten feature runs to rank fourth in Speedweek points, with current Lucas Oil ASCS points leader Shane Stewart and I-30 Speedway regular Justin Sturch tied for fifth.

The balance of the current top ten in Speedweek points includes Travis Rilat, Paul McMahan, Kenneth Walker and Brady Bacon.

In the ASCS2 Micro Sprint Car ranks, Bixby, Oklahoma’s Kevin Bayer shoots for a three-peat on Tuesday night after topping the opening two rounds at Texarkana and Little Rock.

A $10,000 ASCS Speedweek points fund is in place, with each individual night’s feature winner pocketing $3,000.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10 … I-30 SPEEDWAY, LITTLE ROCK, ARK.

On Wednesday, June 10, the stars and cars of the USMTS Southern Series invade the action-packed I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the second affair of the week.

Race fans will have local aces such as Jeremy Kuykendall, David Baser, Mike Sellers, Randy Weaver, Robert Baker, Scooter Scruggs, Jayson Hefley, Chad Mallett, Emmett Lawson, Chris Carter and others to cheer on to take home the top prize.

Johnny Bone Jr. captured the Speedweek win last year at the Fast Trax Speedway, with Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr., Kelly Shryock and Elias Anderson finishing second through fifth.

The wide straight-aways and corners are popular for producing two- and three-wide racing, which makes this a very competitive short track.

Among the favorites from the local racers to challenge for the checkers are points leader Dougie Murphrey, Randy Thompson, Kyle Pleasant, Lee Patton, Bud Mullins, Kent Hollingsworth, Jody Davidson, Sammy Knighten, Chase Del Rio, Richard Roberts and others.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstand gates swing open at 5:00, hot laps take to the track at 6:30 and the racing action kicks off at 7:00. USRA Southern Limited Modifieds will also be on the racing card going for $500 to win.

Billy Robinson, Randy Paine Jr., Michael Knighton, Tony Lindsey, Mike Washburn, Ronnie McAteer, Dustin Randol, Josh Worn, Derrick Grigsby and Michael Easley are just a few of the local Boothill Speedway heavy-hitters expected to contend for a spot in the Sunoco “A” Main and the $2,000 top prize.
