It’s familiar territory for the ASCS Gulf South contenders on Saturday night at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX. Then on Sunday night, it’s new territory in the form of Kilgore’s Lone Star Speedway.

Aaron Reutzel, the 19-year-old Micro grad from Clute, TX, leads a stout field of ASCS Gulf South title contenders into the weekend with the initial six events of the season in the books.

Reutzel holds a 24-point advantage over two-time and defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, who enters the weekend ranked fourth behind a pair of National contenders.

Eighteen-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX, is another six points back, with Conroe’s Tommy Bryant just two more points back after collecting his second career ASCS Gulf South feature win this past weekend.

Other top Gulf South contenders expected for the weekend include 2005 champion Ray Allen Kulhanek (Magnolia), Jimmy Brooks (College Station), Kent Lewis, Jr. (Willis), Brandon Corn (Gause), Scottie McDonald (New Caney), 2006 champion Gary Watson (Beaumont), Chris Sweeney (Channelview) four-time series runner-up Greg Rilat (Texas City), James McNeil (Alvin), rookie teen contender Klint Angelette (Thibodaux, LA) and the brothers Elliott (Bean and Travis) of Alvin.

Both nights of action are slated to get under way at 7:00 p.m.

The high-banked, ¼-mile Gator Motorplex red clay oval is located in Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill exit), then east, then 1.4 miles south on SR 75. For more information, contact the track at 936-588-6127.

Eric Baldaccini Bags first ASCS win with Gulf South Score at Houston Raceway Park

May 17, 2009

Eric Baldaccini captured his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 25-lap ASCS Gulf South main event before a standing-room-only crowd at Houston Raceway Park.

Saturday night's ASCS Gulf South Region main event goes green before a packed house at Baytown's Houston Raceway Park.

Saturday night's ASCS Gulf South Region main event goes green before a packed house at Baytown's Houston Raceway Park.

The 2008 Brodix Rookie of the Year with the Lucas Oil ASCS National series withstood a lap 18 challenge from Gary Wright en route to posting the $3,000 victory over a field of 40 entries.

“Wow, this is such a relief,” the 21-year-old Keller, TX, racer exclaimed after the triumph. “This is awesome, it’s great to finally win one of these.”

Baldaccini finally snared that elusive first checkered flag in front of Jason Johnson, who battled past Wright in the final stages. Wright settled for third, with Paul McMahan and two-time ASCS Gulf South champion Brandon Berryman rounding out the top five.

And, even though Baldaccini led all the way from the pole starting position aboard his father’s Smiley’s Racing Products No. 4 Maxim, he still had to earn it by surviving an exchange with four-time ASCS National champion Gary Wright just seven laps shy of the checkered flag.

“When he slid me, I didn’t think there was any way he could make it stick,” Baldaccini explained. “Actually, that was the best thing that could of happened to me. I had to make a run to get back by him getting into one and that’s when I found the rubber. That made all the difference.”

Starting from the pole, Baldaccini outgunned 17-year-old Trey Robb for the point at the drop of the green flag, with Travis Rilat quickly moving into second as Wright raced from ninth to third in the opening three rounds.

Lapped traffic became a factor in short order when Rilat tangled with a lapped machine entering turn one and spun to a stop with race-ending front end damage. Under the caution period, Robb retired to the pit area as well with mechanical woes.

After a turn four scramble one lap later for Ray Allen Kulhanek and Jimmy Brooks, Baldaccini set sail with Wright, Johnson, 15th-starter McMahan and 11th-starter Brady Bacon in tow. And when lapped traffic again came into play at the midway point, Wright moved in for the kill.

Looking high and then low, Wright was challenging Baldaccini for the lead on the 13th circuit when Brooks looped it in turn three with the frontrunners scrambling to avoid further carnage as the yellow lights flickered.

In another handful of laps, the leaders were back in traffic and Wright dove into turn three and slid across the track to momentarily take the lead away from Baldaccini on the 18th round. But, Baldaccini crossed back underneath exiting turn four and beat Wright down the frontstretch and into turn one.

Inadvertently finding the rubber in turns one and two, Baldaccini checked out in the final handful of laps to secure the win as reigning Lucas Oil ASCS National champion Jason Johnson battled past Wright for runner-up honors.

After picking off nine positions in the opening six circuits, McMahan held fourth the rest of the way. Berryman raced back around Bacon over the final half of the race to round out the top five. Bacon was sixth, while James McNeil earned Hard Charger efforts by racing from 23rd to seventh. Jerry Bell was eighth, Channin Tankersley rebounded from an early visit to the work area for ninth and current series points leader Aaron Reutzel completed the top ten.

Baldaccini, Tommy Bryant, Robb, Bell and Wright topped heat race action, with Darryl Wills and Kulhanek winning the twin “B” Mains.

Tommy Bryant and Gary Wright split ASCS Gulf South honors at Golden Triangle Raceway Park on Friday

May 16, 2009

Gary Wright and Tommy Bryant both posted $2,000 triumphs on Friday night as the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region completed twin 25-lap features at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.

Wright picked off his third ASCS Gulf South win in as many 2009 tries by topping the regularly-scheduled 25-lapper, while Bryant bagged his second career series triumph in the makeup of the feature postponed by rain from April 24.

Gary Wright snared his 4th ASCS Regional win of the season winning Friday's ASCS Gulf South main event at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, TX.

Gary Wright snared his 4th ASCS Regional win of the season winning Friday's ASCS Gulf South main event at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, TX.

While Bryant took command midway through en route to victory lane in the nightcap feature event, Wright paced only the final three rounds after race-long leader Travis Rilat tangled with a lapped car and flipped as the lead battle boiled over.

Rilat gunned into the lead from the pole position in the night’s originally scheduled main event, weathering several early incidents with Jason Johnson, fellow front row starter Brandon Berryman, Paul McMahan and sixth-starter Wright in tow.

Rilat fought off a Jason Johnson bid for the lead on the seventh round and opened up an advantage of several car-lengths as McMahan and Wright worked past Berryman. Wright then blasted past McMahan for third on a lap ten restart and set his sights on the lead duo.

Vying for his first win of 2009, Rilat cruised out front until lapped traffic came into play on the 18th lap, with Johnson quickly moving in to challenge for the point. Rilat fought off Johnson’s advances, with Wright joining the fray by taking second from Johnson on the 22nd circuit.

With Wright nipping at his heels, Rilat pressed the issue with a lapped car in turns one and two on the 24th lap and flipped after contact. Wright narrowly missed out on the fracas, escaping with minor wing damage.

Out front on the restart for the first time all night, Wright raced to the checkered flag unabated over the final three laps aboard Scott Brown’s ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service/Richwood Construction No. 9x Maxim.

“I had a little more stagger than those guys had, so I could chop down in the corners,” Wright explained afterward. “I think we would have got him (Rilat) anyway.”

Johnson settled for runner-up honors five car-lengths back, with McMahan taking the show position in his ASCS Gulf South debut. Tommy Bryant raced from 12th to fourth, while Brady Bacon rebounded from a lap three skirmish to round out the top five after Trey Robb failed to report to the scales.

After advancing eight positions for a top-five run in the first main event, ASCS Gulf South title contender Tommy Bryant found himself in the sixth row once again in the makeup feature, only to the inside this time. And it didn’t take him long to battle into contention, as he had cracked the top five just behind pole starter Terry Monroe, Brandon Corn, Berryman and Channin Tankersley after only a handful of circuits.

Bryant disposed of Tankersley and then moved to third when Corn lost power on the ninth round, precipitating the first of two cautions.

Bryant outdueled Berryman, Tankersley and a surging Ray Allen Kulhanek for second over the next couple of rounds and then charged by Monroe on the top side of turn two on the 12th round to take the lead for keeps.

“I have to thank David Miller and his wife, they give me the best stuff to race with and I’m just happy to be able to get this win for them,” Bryant commented after his second career ASCS Gulf South score aboard the B&M Jr./Hometech Construction No. 21T J&J.

Kulhanek claimed runner-up honors after also starting in the sixth row, while Tankersley bounced back from a turn two flip on the third lap of the earlier feature to snare the show position. “My crew was still putting oil in and tightening things up when the feature started rolling, they did a great job just to get me out there,” Tankersley explained.

Coupled with a sixth-place run in the early feature, Aaron Reutzel’s fourth-place showing in the nightcap kept him atop the ASCS Gulf South point charts, while two-time and reigning series champion Brandon Berryman rounded out the top five.

Forty cars were on hand for Friday’s action, with Berryman, Ryan Hall, Reutzel, Jimmy Brooks and Kulhanek topping heat race action. Eric Baldaccini and Bacon won the “B” Mains. Ty Johnson flipped in heat race competition, while Hall flipped on a lap four restart in the first “A” Main. There were no injuries.

Nineteen of the 20 cars slated for the makeup feature from April 24 were on hand, with 18 answering the bell for the finale. Bryant (4th and 1st), Kulhanek (7th and 2nd), Reutzel (6th and 4th) and Baldaccini (9th and 8th) each finished among the top ten in both feature events.

Houston Motorsports Park to fire up “Fiesta’s Super Spring Fling” this Saturday

May 15, 2009

The fire-breathing NASCAR Fiesta Late Models, the low-slung, lightning-quck NASCAR Cricket Modifieds and the always-competitive Texas Pro Trucks will be the featured racing divisions this Saturday at Houston Motorsports Park.

Two San Antonio area Late Model drivers - Joe Aramendia and Brandon Bendele - will lead a strong contingent into the “Fiesta 50″ at the immaculate, 3/8-mile, Northeast Houston facility. Aramendia sits atop the Late Model point standings, but Bendele - winner of the first Late Model event in March - is only three points behind. Also expected to make a strong showing is Greg Davidson who won the last Late Model show earlier this month.

Veteran campaigner Denny Burton, Justin Long and Corpus Christi hotshoe Tuffy Hudson are the NASCAR Cricket Modified point leaders and all three are expected to be near the front at the finish line of Saturday’s “Cricket 40.”

The Pro Trucks will be making their second stop of the season at the HMP oval to compete in the “Specialty Supply 30.”

Also on tap are the Houston Pro Stocks, the Limited Modifieds, Bandoleros, Legends and Eco Stocks in heat and feature races.

Kevin Ramey - broken leg and all - set for Cowtown ASCS Lone Star Region Sprint Car race on Saturday

May 14, 2009

It was supposed to be a Texas Double for the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) Lone Star Region Sprint Cars, but RMP Speedway’s Friday show has been rained out leaving only the Cowtown Speedway portion to be contested.

Not even a broken leg can keep Kevin Ramey down, as the Fort Worth shoe leads the ASCS Lone Star Region into the Cowtown Speedway event this Saturday.

Friday’s card at RPM Speedway in Crandall, TX, - had it not been called off due to weather - would have marked the first Sprint Car event at the new facility, while Saturday’s $2,000 to win event takes place at Kennedale’s Cowtown Speedway, a Sprint Car racing haven.

After fracturing his left leg just below the knee in an April 25 crash at Cowtown Speedway, a hobbled Ramey climbed back into his rebuilt Sprint Car for this past weekend’s ASCS Lone Star vs. Sooner Region Shootout despite medical orders to the contrary.

And, the two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion responded with a pair of solid top-ten feature runs, including an eighth-place showing among Friday night’s 56-car field at Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway and then a fourth-place run among 44 entries Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Dallas.

Those finishes, combined with a runner-up showing at Waco and a Cowtown win during the inaugural weekend of ASCS Lone Star competition, have allowed Ramey to open up a 68-point advantage over Princeton, Texas’ Brad Welborn in the Lone Star title chase.

While Welborn enters the weekend as Ramey’s closest chaser, the firefighter is just eight markers ahead of Oklahoma shoe Brian McClelland. McClelland is pursuing both the ASCS Sooner and Lone Star championships in 2009 after posting back-to-back Sooner titles in 2007 and 2008.

Flower Mound’s Matt Clevenger enters the weekend ranked fourth, with Fort Worth’s J.P. Bailey rounding out the current top five. The balance of the top ten includes Kolt Walker (Graham, TX), Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX), Claud Estes (Godley, TX) and Michael Lang (Mesquite, TX).

Cowtown Speedway has had nine different winners in the last nine ASCS Regional events atop the high-speed, high-banked dirt oval. Ramey is the series most recent winner at Cowtown with his April 4 triumph snapping a victory drought in ASCS competition of 41 nights.

With three overall ASCS wins at Cowtown, Ramey is just one of three drivers to post multiple series victories at the facility. Matching Ramey, Travis Rilat has posted three Cowtown wins while Sam Hafertepe, Jr., has topped two features. Last year’s Cowtown ASCS winners included Rilat, Gary Taylor, Brad Welborn, Kolt Walker, Gavin Punch and Brian Brown.

Saturday’s card at Cowtown Speedway is firing off at 7:00 p.m.

The high-banked, ¼-mile Cowtown Speedway dirt oval is located in Kennedale, TX, just east of Fort Worth off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road. For more information, contact the track at 817-478-9952.

The inaugural season of ASCS Lone Star Region competition will consist of 18 events at nine different tracks throughout North Texas along with one venture north of the Red River to Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Jake Lucas captures EMSA/ACS2 Mini Sprint win on fast 105 Speedway track

May 12, 2009

Twenty eight cars beat the heat Saturday night and made it out to Cleveland, Texas for the 4th race of the EMSA/ACS2 mini sprint 2009 schedule. 105 Speedway looked good from the beginning with a fast track and tons of talent to tame it.

No fears were evident from points leader Caleb Martin who finished nearly a straight away ahead of the competition in his heat, this after coming off a terrible accident last Saturday. J.J. Simmons crossed the line first, but with a trail of smoke following during his heat race. An engine problem caused him to scratch for the “A’ Main. It was smooth sailing for Jake Lucas in his Pace Chassis during his heat race which would line him up on the outside pole of the “A” Main.

Twenty Four Cars lined up when the green flag dropped on the “A’ main and Jake Lucas hard on the gas. Quickly leading the pack around the two grove track, Lucas wasn’t looking back. Lucas lead every lap despite a few cautions and a red flag. Caleb Martin and Michael McNeil weren’t going to let Lucas run off with the show. McNeil had Lucas in the cross hairs several times, but couldn’t quite pull off the pass and settled for a close second.

Jake Lucas kicked up some dirt in celebration while l McNeil, Martin, McDonald, and Porter finished off the top 5. Caleb Martin still holds the point lead by a 90 point margin of Jake Lucas. Jake Lucas is being closely followed by 2 time defending point champion Luke Lucas who currently stands third in points.

The boys are off next weekend, but will be back in action on May 23rd at 105 speedway. For a complete list of results, points, and schedule visit www.EMSARacing.com

Texan Aaron Reutzel, 19, leads ASCS Gulf South points going into GTRP and HRP events this weekend

May 12, 2009

A crucial weekend of competition looms for the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region with three feature events to be contested over two nights of racing action.

And, with 19-year-old Aaron Reutzel of Clute, TX, atop a tightly-bunched championship points chase, it’s a pair of familiar ovals the Gulf South forces will invade in the form of Golden Triangle Raceway Park and Houston Raceway Park.

On Friday night, twin features are on the docket at Beaumont’s Golden Triangle Raceway Park. The evening kicks off with the makeup of the feature event from April 24, when rain halted racing action just before the main event could hit the track. Terry Monroe and Brandon Corn will lead the way to the green flag from the front row in the makeup feature event.

After that main event, a full racing card of heats and features follows with the Sixth Annual John Bankston Memorial. Both features offer up $2,000 to win. While the makeup feature lineup is set, the balance of the night is open to all comers.

Then, on Saturday night, the series makes its first stop of the season at Baytown’s Houston Raceway Park for the $3,000 to win Seventh Annual Ronald Laney Memorial.

Reutzel, who celebrated his 19th birthday last Friday, is out to the early lead in ASCS Gulf South points on the strength of three consecutive top-ten feature runs including a third-place finish at the Gator Motorplex on March 28.

That lead is a slim one however, with just seven points between himself and Jason Johnson (who missed the April 24 feature cut after a “B” Main crash) and eight points between himself and 18-year-old gasser Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX. Reutzel will start Friday night’s makeup feature from the fourth row outside, one row directly behind Tankersley.

New Caney’s Scottie McDonald and Willis’ Kent Lewis, Jr., are both right in the mix as well within 14 points of the leader, with other top title contenders including two-time and reigning series champion Brandon Berryman (Missouri City), Jimmy Brooks (College Station), Tommy Bryant (Conroe), Brandon Corn (Gause), Ray Allen Kulhanek (Magnolia), Chris Sweeney (Channelview) and Greg Rilat (Texas City) among others.

Tankersley doubled up with a pair of wins at Golden Triangle Raceway Park last year with Gary Watson and Jason Johnson also posting GTRP victories. Gary Wright topped the series season opener at GTRP in March.

The series featured four different winners at Houston Raceway Park in 2008 including Jack Dover, Brandon Berryman, Michael Dupuy and Jason Johnson.

Several Lucas Oil ASCS National invaders will likely join the ASCS Gulf South forces as well for the weekend.

Friday’s card at Golden Triangle Raceway Park is slated to get under way at 7:45 p.m., with Saturday’s action at Houston Raceway Park set to go green at 7:00 p.m.

Golden Triangle Raceway Park is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 near Beaumont, TX. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

Houston Raceway Park is located east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 798, then three miles south on State Road 146, then 0.8 miles southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565. For more information, contact the track at 281-383-7223.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 28 nights of racing action at eleven different tracks throughout Texas in 2009.
