Bell tolls for Jerry Bell at Lone Star Speedway’s ASCS Lone Star Region Sprint show

May 31, 2009

Garland’s Jerry Bell used early patience and let the track and field come to him in winning the 25-lap ASCS Lone Star Region A-main at Lone Star Speedway Saturday night.

Jerry Bell won the inaugural ASCS Lone Star Region Spring Car race at Lone Star Speedway on Saturday

Bell, who started eighth, ran in top five through the beginning and caught race leader Brad Welborn in traffic after halfway. Using the high side, Bell blasted by Welborn for the lead on lap 18. Two late-race restarts gave Welborn a second and third chance to regain the lead, but Bell held off the challenges for the win.

The ASCS Lone Star Region Sprint Cars made their inaugural visit to Abilene’s semi-banked quarter-mile track with 24 of the region’s cars and stars signing in for their chance to capture the first ever ASCS feature win on the red clay oval.

Despite a broken leg, current ASCS Lone Star Region point leader Kevin Ramey presented the colors during the driver introduction on the front straightaway.

Sprint Car heats would determine the top eight spots through a redraw. Originally scheduled to be a 20-car A-main with a B-main completing the field, all 22 car started after two cars were eliminated after flipping in the third heat race.

As green waved on the 22-car field of winged-warriors, pole-sitter Michael Lang and Welborn banged wheels coming out of turn four. Lang recovered first to lead as the field entered the first turn and he led at the end of the first circuit. However, Welborn sailed by on the top for the lead only to have yellow wave after Marty Stanford spun to stack up Andy Rea and Greg Floyd who spun behind him. Stanford would make it to turn 4 before he spun.

The restart didn’t make it to green when Brian Parker spun in turn four.

The next restart was green until turn one when current Lone Star Region point leader, Kevin Ramey, clipped an infield tire and slowed with a broken front suspension, ending his night.

Finally back under green, Welborn took a look high in turn one, but couldn’t make it work. Welborn then ducked low in turn three getting by Lang for the point on the third lap.

Claud Estes spun from his top ten spot but was able to keep the fire lit. He continued on but fell to the tail of the field.

In the pack, Bell had worked his way up and was looking low on Lang for second. Lang fought off the challenge and closed in on Welborn who got loose off turn two on the seventh circuit. Dalton Steed looped his mount on lap seven to bring out a yellow.

Once back to green, Welborn got a good jump while Bell got inside Lang for second. After a short battle, Matt Clevenger got around John Ricketts for fourth on lap eleven with Ricketts losing another spot to Scott Reneau a lap later.

At halfway it was Welborn, who had Bell closing quickly, Lang, Clevenger and Reneau in the top five. The lead duo made some contact on lap 13 with both able to motor on but Bell lost some ground in the exchange.

Welborn caught slower traffic on lap 15 allowing Bell to reel him back in. Bell jumped up top and got around Welborn for the top spot on lap 18, while Clevenger took third from Lang. Bell had a slight scare on lap 21 when Parker did a 360 in front of him. Clevenger’s top 5 run ended on lap 22 when he spun to the infield after an encounter with a track tire.

Bell got a huge jump on green while Ricketts retook the spot from Reneau. Parker and Stanford had separate spins on opposite ends of the track to bring the yellow out on lap 23.

Bell again got clear of Welborn, but Robert Byrom spun in turn 2 to set up a one lap shootout to the checkers. This time Welborn hung with Bell on green but lost ground in turn 2 giving Bell some breathing room on his way to the victory in the Bells Conversions, Smiley’s Racing Products, Select Coatings, ARP Wings, Pro Shocks, Circle Wheels, Eckley Race Engines, Eagle Chassis.

“My crew chief, Timmy Jones, told me the car was set up for midway and out,” said Bell. “From about midway on my car really got fast on the outside. The outside came in for me, that’s about all I can say about it.

“I just tried to watch lapped cars once I caught Brad (Welborn). There was that that one time when I got a good run on him going into the corner and ran over his right rear. I thought that was the end of it right then. When I got some air I just hit the brakes and hoped nothing on the front of the car was broke.”

May 27, 2009

Abilene Speedway in Abilene, Texas, is gearing up for its first dose of big-time Sprint Car racing as the ASCS Lone Star Region invades the ¼-mile semi-banked clay oval this Saturday night.

Saturday’s stop at Abilene marks the fifth round in the ASCS Lone Star championship points chase after the series most recent pair of events were washed out on May 15-16.

ASCS Lone Star Region point leader Kevin Ramey in his familiar #9M

Fort Worth’s Kevin Ramey, a two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion, is out to the early lead as he vies for the inaugural Lone Star title. After a runner-up run in the inaugural Lone Star feature at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on April 3, Ramey rallied from eight rows deep the next night at Cowtown Speedway to snare the win.

Then, broken leg and all, Ramey added a pair of top-ten feature runs during the ASCS Red River Shootout that pitted the Lone Star Region against the ASCS Sooner Region to extend his points lead 68 markers over Princeton, TX, shoe Brad Welborn.

Two-time and defending Sooner Region champion Brian McClelland of Tulsa, OK, enters Saturday’s action third in points, just eight markers behind Welborn, with Flower Mound’s Matt Clevenger and Fort Worth’s J.P. Bailey rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the top ten in ASCS Lone Star points entering Saturday’s action includes Kolt Walker (Graham, TX), Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX), Claud Estes (Godley, TX) and Michael Lang (Mesquite, TX).

Saturday’s card is slated to go green at 8:00 p.m.

Abilene Speedway is located in Abilene, TX, off westbound I-20 Exit 278, then south over I-20, then back east on I-20 to Exit 279, then 1.1 mile east on Business I-20. For more information, contact the track at 325-692-8800 or 325-537-4494.

The inaugural slate of ASCS Lone Star Region competition consists of 18 events at nine different tracks throughout North Texas in addition to one venture north of the Red River to Oklahoma City’s State Fair Speedway.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.

Cody Smith and the “Young Guns” sweep top spots in Texas Super Racing Series “Operation Interdependence 75″ at Thunderhill Raceway

May 25, 2009

Like the week before at Houston Motorsports Park, the young guns of the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Model division swept the top spots at Thunderhill Raceway during the running of the annual “Operation Interdependence 75.”

Teen drivers Cody Smith, Jake Kruger and Dillon Spreen swept the top three spots at the tricky three-eight-mile, D-Shaped oval in Kyle, Texas. And another youngster, Levi Krauss finished fifth to take four of the top five finishing spots!

Veteran driver Robert Barker finished fourth after a race-long tussle with Spreen for position.

The cleanly-run, seventy-five lap affair only was slowed by one caution period - and that was for some debris on the racing surface on the eighteenth lap.

TSRS point leader Bobby Teer, Jr, took the early lead from his front-row starting-spot on the grid which was set by point standings due to the weather conditions, but Smith and Kruger were quickly into second and third.

After several laps of constant pressure from Smith, Teer finally gave up the lead on the ninth circuit and a good portion of the field, which had pretty much bunched up behind the leaders, freight-trained under the Teer machine, dropping him back to sixth behind another youngster, Kendall Bumbera.

From that point on Smith and Kruger - two very evenly matched drivers in two very evenly matched racing machines – went nose-to-tail at the front while the rest of the field battled for position.

Youngsters Cody Smith (05) and Jake Kruger battled for the most of the 75 laps

At halfway it was Smith, Kruger, Spreen, Cary Stapp, Barker, Krauss, Teer, Bumbera, Jeff O’Neil, Robert Walton and Todd Farris.

One of the more exciting battles back in the pack was between Teer and Krauss for third. Every time Krauss was able to get his nose under Teer, Teer would slam the door. Finally, after many tries, Krauss made it by on the 50th circuit. Another good battle was waged between Barker and Spreen with Spreen coming out on top in that one.

By the time the checkered flag flew, Smith and Kruger had almost a half lap on Spreen and Barker. Smith took the well-deserved win after running a flawless race. Kruger gave it a great try but came up a bit short for second. Spreen crossed the line a few car lengths over Barker and even further back Krauss and Teer rounded out the top six.

Official TSRS Late Model results:

1. 05 Cody Smith, La Vernia, 75 laps
2. 14 Jake Kruger, Bastrop, 75 laps
3. 81 Dillon Spreen, Boerne, 75 laps
4. 17 Robert Barker, Boerne, 75 laps
5. 4 Levi Krauss, Seguin, 75 laps

Young Jack Dover takes $10K ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series win at Steve King Memorial

May 25, 2009

Nineteen-year-old Jack Dover of Springfield, NE, captured the biggest victory of his young career with a $10,000 Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters score in Sunday’s Steve King Memorial presented by Coors Light at the Jetmore Motorplex.

Dover took the lead away from Wayne Johnson on the 17th round and then held off a late bid from Gary Wright in the 35-lapper to secure his second career ASCS National win aboard the Eckley-powered 3D Auto Transport/Home Pride Co. No. 53 Eagle, all in front of the VERSUS Network cameras.

“The competition here is unreal, this is the biggest win I’ve had by far,” Dover commented from victory lane. “With everything that Lucas Oil and K&N Filters are doing with this series, it’s the best thing going.”

Jack Dover celbrates his $10K win

Jack Dover celbrates his $10K win

Dover locked himself into Sunday night’s main event via a late move around Gary Wright for the fourth and final transfer position in Saturday night’s preliminary feature event. And, when it all boiled down to the critical final circuits on Sunday night, it was once again Dover denying Wright. Only this time, it was for the $10,000 winner’s share.

Starting from the third position, Dover chased pole starter Wayne Johnson in the early rounds. But when Johnson struggled with the turn two cushion on consecutive laps near the midway point, Dover took quick advantage by racing into the lead on the 17th round.

Dover checked out in the ensuing rounds, leaving Johnson to battle with the likes of Shane Stewart, Travis Rilat and Gary Wright. By the time the race’s first caution flew with 29 laps in the books for Brian Brown’s stalled mount off the backstretch, Dover’s straightaway advantage was erased and it was Wright who had battled from the fifth position on the 23rd lap into the runner-up slot by the 25th lap.

Dover had the luxury of a pair of lapped cars between himself and Wright on the lap 30 restart. That luxury was gone when the caution flew again for a stalled Tim Crawley with just three laps remaining.

With the four-time ASCS National champion on his tailtank, Dover admitted that, “I was nervous, I just kept telling myself ‘Stay calm, stay calm’.”

Wright wasted no time, challenging for the lead as soon as action resumed. But, with Wright working the low side and Dover up top, the red lights flickered on when Zach Chappell missed the turn three cushion and tumbled down the embankment. Chappell, who held down third for the initial eleven laps before slipping back, walked away uninjured.

Under the ensuing open red flag, Dover and crew made the right calls. “I told them to put a couple of rounds in it and they told me where to run.”

It worked, as Dover dashed away from Wright and company over the final three-lap charge to the stripe to secure the win. Wright settled for runner-up honors in Scott Brown’s ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service No. 9x Maxim, with Rilat taking the show position in the Shark-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X.

Mired in ninth as late as the 23rd lap, defending Lucas Oil ASCS National champion Jason Johnson made a late charge to claim fourth in Lanny Row’s Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports No. 41 Eagle.

After cracking the Lucas Oil ASCS feature lineup for the first time in four 2009 tries, Jesse Hockett earned Hard Charger honors by racing from 22nd to round out the top five aboard the RMS-powered VKCC Motorsports/Tom Buch No. 13 JEI.

Wayne Johnson slipped to sixth at the stripe in Donnie Cooper’s No. 01 entry, with Shane Stewart clinging to a two-point lead over Wright in the $60,000 championship points chase by crossing the line in seventh.

Utilizing a promoter’s option to start the main event, Tony Bruce, Jr., blasted from 25th to eighth, picking up some extra cash but no extra points.

Danny Wood raced from 18th to ninth, while Brady Bacon gained a handful of positions to finish as the final car on the lead lap in tenth.

Wayne Johnson, Paul McMahan, Jason Johnson, Gary Taylor and Brian Brown topped Sunday night’s heat race action, with W. Johnson and Seth Bergman joining in on the redraw as the night’s top passing points earners. Saturday’s top four finishers left the front row open for Johnson and Bergman.

Nick Smith won the first 15-lap “B” Main, with Danny Wood topping the second “B” Main.

Kenneth Walker got upside down in turn two on the 11th lap of the first “B”, collecting Darren Long and Eric Baldaccini. On the restart, Matt Covington went for a wild ride in turn two after contact while battling for the third and final transfer position. There were no injuries, with Walker and Baldaccini both using provisionals for the main event.
