Fifteen year-old Jake Kruger takes charge in TSRS event at Corpus Christi Speedway

April 20, 2009

Fifteen year-old Jake Kruger from Bastrop, TX – known by his team as “The Boss” – cracked the whip in Saturday night’s 75-lap Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Model race at Corpus Christi Speedway.

Young Jake Kruger takes a victory lap in following his TSRS Late Model win

Although Kruger has raced at Corpus Christi Speedway before with the Allison Legacy Racing Series, he is only in his second year in the TSRS Late Model class. He finished fifth in the 2008 TSRS Late Model points race and captured the TSRS Late Model Rookie of the Year title.

Kruger had his sights set on breaking the track record and began his weekend by turning in some impressive practice laps on Friday evening. Not surprisingly, Kruger turned in the top qualifying time on Saturday afternoon – clocking in with 14.072 seconds and shattering the track record of 14.515 seconds set by Ervin Breiten, Jr., on September 18, 2004.

Kruger’s good fortune continued when he grabbed the pole position in a post-qualifying draw. After leading the starting lineup to the green flag, Kruger quickly pulled ahead by several car lengths. He never looked back for the rest of the 75-lap event.

Kruger was eager to share his race strategy following his win. “I drove the car at half throttle throughout the entire race. I only used the brakes to set the nose, and then I’d just ease into the gas.”

“I was also able to get some really good starts after the cautions,” added Kruger. “I could usually gain two-three car lengths on the starts, which helped me stay in the lead.”

Kruger credits John Heil, known as “The Corpus Christi King,” with giving him the advice he needed to pull off the win. “John told me to take it easy on the throttle, don’t use the brakes much and save the tires. And John knows his stuff when it comes to Corpus Christi Speedway.”

Kruger is sponsored by Kruger Motorsports, Turner Motorsports, TRC Racecars and BMF Shocks.

Prior to the TSRS Late Model race, the newly acquired TSRS Allison Legacys awed the fans with their 50-lap feature race.

Rusty Mirth from Austin, TX, had clocked the second-fastest qualifying time earlier in the day and had also drawn the pole starting position. Similar to Kruger, Mirth held off the remaining field for the entire race.

Even though Mirth was a strong competitor with the Pro Trucks during the last few years, it’s his first season with the TSRS Allison Legacys. With just one prior race under his belt, he was able to capture his first victory this season.

Mirth is sponsored by Austin Boat Clinic, Austin Auto Signs and Graphi-Tees.

Interestingly enough, Kruger is currently mentoring 12-year-old Jake Wright in the TSRS Allison Legacy Series. After starting in the seventh position, Wright was able to battle his way up through the field to claim the second position – showing his mentor that he could also pull off a strong finish.

The TSRS Late Models will make the next stop on their tour at Houston Motorsports Park on May 2 as part of the “Adrenaline on Asphalt” show.

The TSRS Allison Legacys will be racing again this Saturday night (April 25) at Thunderhill Raceway – along with the Pro Trucks, Pro Modifieds, the ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks, Mini Stocks and NasKarts.

Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. The racing action will begin with qualifying at 5:30 p.m., heat races at 6 p.m. and feature races at 7 p.m.

Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, just north of San Marcos (TX) near Yarrington Road (Exit #210).

USMTS Southern Series Tripleheader postponed due to weather concerns

April 16, 2009

Due to impending inclement weather, the USMTS Southern Series events scheduled for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 17-19, have been postponed, officials announced Thursday.

Friday’s show at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, will now be held on Thursday, May 7, while Saturday’s race at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, has been moved to Sunday, May 10.

These two shows will bookend a four-day, four-track swing that includes a trip to the Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, on Friday, May 8, and the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas, on Saturday, May 9.

Sunday’s event at the 105 Speedway in Cleveland, Texas, has not been rescheduled. Officials are reviewing possible venues to hold an event on Wednesday, May 6, which would make for a five-race swing to wrap up the West Region of the USMTS Southern Series.

Up next for the USMTS Southern Series will be an East Region tripleheader next weekend featuring a trio of $2,000-to-win contests.

On Friday, April 24, action will take place at the Texarkana 67 Speedway in Texarkana, Ark., as the USMTS banner flies there for the first time ever. Saturday, April 25, will find the tough-as-nails touring titans at the Champion Park Speedway in Haughton, La., before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, April 26, at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La.

Texas Super Racing Series returns to Corpus Christi Speedway after four year absence

April 16, 2009

After nearly a four-year absence from racing at Corpus Christi Speedway, the Texas Super Racing Series Late Model Series returns to the quarter-mile ‘bullring’ on Saturday night.

“I’m thrilled to be able to go back to Corpus Christi,” said Mary Ann Naumann, TSRS founder and owner. “I have always liked the little ‘Bullring.’ It can be a little intimidating for the drivers and given the right respect, it’s a fun track to watch a race there.”

Corpus Christi Speedway, better know as the ‘Bullring’ in the South Texas racing community, has a reputation of being a fast, but challenging quarter-mile asphalt oval. The last time the TSRS Late Models visited the speedway was April 23, 2005. Jamie Fuller won that event.

On Saturday night, the TSRS Late Models and the newly acquired Allison Legacy Series will compete for the first and only time this season at the track.

The Late Models will compete in a 75-lap race and the Allison Legacy Series will compete in a 50-lap main event. The gates open at 6 p.m., qualifying for both series begins at 7 p.m. and the feature races start at 8 p.m.

“I see a different kind of excitement with the staff, officials and the teams that have already pre-registered,” Naumann said. “This will be the first time the series has been away from our home track this season and for the Allison Legacy Series, I think it is going to be extremely exciting for them because it will be the first time that they will really be a part of the TSRS.”

Naumann, also the owner and promoter of Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, said a new sense of excitement and enthusiasm has been developed with both series since she acquired the Allison Legacy Series late last year.

“I know that it is a huge part of Thunderhill by having the TSRS there and adding the Allison Legacy Series too,” Naumann said. “Bringing on the TSRS Allison Legacy Series has been a new branching that to me has put a little more excitement in the series.”

Naumann said she is pleased with the way the TSRS Late Model season has started. After two races there are two different winners on circuit. Robert Barker won the season opener on March 14 and Cody Smith won the last race on March 28. Both races were held at Thunderhill.

“No one is dominating this year,” Naumann said. “I think we are going to see some good side-by-side and good, hard racing. A lot of cars are competitive with each other, and they are not separated.”

Despite a struggling economy, the two series are drawing decent car counts. The Late Models are averaging 17 cars per race and the Allison Legacy almost 14.

“I think that because of the way we’ve scheduled the races that we try to give the teams enough time in between (events),” she said. “And what they have done is budgeted it out where they can afford to run with us.”

Saturday’s race marks the third stop on the TSRS circuit. In addition to the Corpus Christi and Thunderhill, the series’ home-based track, the TSRS Late Models will also be racing at Houston Motorsports Park Speedway and at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls in 2009.

“I think it’s wonderful for the series that we have four different tracks where we compete,” Naumann said. “I think the reputation that the series has had and the consistency that it has had, has played an important part of why the tracks want the series to be there.”

Barker enters Saturday’s 75-lap TSRS Late Model race with a narrow five-point lead over Bobby Teer Jr. in the series standings. Smith is 39 points back in third, followed by rookies Jeff O’Neill and Kendall Bumbera, who are fourth and fifth respectively. Only 66 points separate the top five drivers in the standings.

“I think once the drivers start seeing the different tracks where they are going to be racing, then they will get more excited about it and it will seem more like a touring and traveling series.” Naumann said.

Saldana wins World of Outlaw Sprint Car Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park: Completes Texas Two Step

April 12, 2009

It had been a couple of years since Joey Saldana had raced in Texas prior to this weekend, but he quickly remembered how much he enjoys racing in the state after winning on Friday night in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series return to Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore and he backed that up with a victory to cap off the weekend in the Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night. It was his first win at the track located in Baytown in his 14th start at the facility.

Joey Saldana and crew celebrate for the second time in two days, this time in the Houston Raceway Park Winner's Circle

“It was a great weekend in Texas for sure,” said Saldana. “I can’t wait to come back here again and the fans saw a good show tonight. I can’t thank Budweiser and Kasey enough for what they do. I’m very proud of this entire team right now. All of the hard work is really paying off.”

The $10,000 triumph at the high-banked ¼-mile was Saldana’s series leading fifth aboard the Budweiser Maxim to start the 2009 season. He also moved to within just four points of 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, who is second in the series championship standings as they chase three-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz. Saldana now has 44 career World of Outlaws A-Feature wins and is just two shy of Bobby Davis Jr., who is 10th on the all-time win list.

The race began on Saturday night with a quick caution that led to a complete restart that saw Jac Haudenschild lead the field into turns one and two, with Johnny Herrera coming all the way from fourth to sweep past Steve Kinser, Joey Saldana and Haudenschild who had started on the pole. Saldana started fourth and moved to third on the opening lap. He moved into second the following lap and took the lead on the third circuit, using the high side of turns three and four to power his way past Herrera.

Steve Kinser (11) and Joey Saladana (9) battle for the lead at Houston Raceway Park on Saturday. Jac Haudenschild (R19) and Danny Lasoski not far behind.

Saldana quickly began to pull away as the battled for second raged as first it was Kinser tracking down Herrera and then Haudenschild. For most of the race, the second spot provided the best battle on the track, with eight different drivers trading the runner-up spot over the course of the 40-lap event using every inch of the racing surface. In open race track, Saldana had a couple of very sizeable advantages, though in lapped traffic the other frontrunners were able to close the gap.

“We were chasing our car all night and the crew: Willie (Kahne) Kolten (Gouse) and Kale (Kahne) worked hard all night,” shared the winner. “Kale changed a lot of torsion bars and we got a lot better feeling car toward the feature. I didn’t know where to go. I didn’t know if I should go to the bottom or the top.”

With just two laps to go, Craig Dollansky passed his teammate Saldana in turn two in lapped traffic, but Saldana was able to retake the lead on the back straightaway as Dollansky was bottled up a little bit by a lapped car and also was nursing a left rear tire that had a puncture in it. Saldana powered his way back in front and was able to extend that margin at the checkered flag, as Dollansky had his hands full with Donny Schatz who worked his way from the 14th starting spot in the Top-Three.

“It was a good race and had to hit your marks,” noted Saldana. “Craig (Dollansky) tried to get by me there coming off of (turn) two and I just stopped and got a good run off the bottom. It was a great win for us.”

After starting at the middle of the field, Schatz fell back to 15th on the opening lap and after that steadily and methodically worked his way into the Top-10 by the halfway point of the 40-lap contest and really was able to turn up the wick in the second half of the race, as he wound up second aboard the Armor All J&J.

“We had a great car and we were just chasing it a little bit trying some things,” Schatz said. “That’s the thing about trying stuff, is that you’ll hurt yourself and you’ll help yourself. We seemed to do both.”

During the final 10 laps of Saturday’s event, Schatz found himself doing battle with Jason Johnson, Danny Lasoski and Craig Dollansky, as each of those drivers took a turn running second, the spot that Schatz would eventually take late in the race. For the second consecutive night, the North Dakota native had one of the fastest cars late in the going. He turned his fastest lap just four laps from the finish as he charged to the front.

“It always is,” he explained of his car being fast later in races. “There is no question that this race car gets as the race goes on. We put ourselves in a good position and made just one mistake and that is what cost us the race. That one mistake can cost you a lot.”

Dollansky ran near the front all night, after winning the second heat race. He was fifth quickest in time trials and consistently had one of the fastest cars on the track. The native of Elk River, Minnesota fell back to fifth early, but made a charge on the 12th lap to go from fifth to third, a spot he would wind up with when the checkered flag flew. He ran second for a number of laps as well aboard the DirecTV Maxim.

“It was a good run for the Kasey Kahne Racing teams tonight,” Dollansky said. “My hat is off to Joey (Saldana) and his crew, they are running very strong. We’re working with our program and trying to get stronger as we go and I think we are making progress. We’ll just keep plugging away and get this car up in Victory Lane one of these times.”

Danny Lasoski was fourth in the Casey’s General Stores JEI, to earn his sixth Top-Five finish of the season and also jump up to the eighth spot in the championship standings. He began the night by setting fast time in qualifying for the second time this year.

Steve Kinser continued his strong start to the 2009 campaign, coming home fifth in the Quaker State Maxim. He has finished in the Top-10 in 10 of the first 11 races of the season as he seeks his record 21st title.

Johnny Herrera finished a very solid sixth after leading the first two laps of the A-Feature. Sammy Swindell was seventh in the Tom Rolfe Trucking Maxim. Jac Haudenschild was eighth aboard the Owens Corning Fiberglass Maxim, with Jason Sides in ninth in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Jason Meyers recovered from an early flat tire that caused him to spin to finish 10th in the GLR Investments KPC.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, April 17 at Paducah International Raceway in Kentucky.

Joey Saldana wins World of Outlaw go at Lone Star Speedway on Friday

April 12, 2009

Joey Saldana scored a big World of Outlaw Sprint Car victory at Lone Star Speedway on Friday for his car owner Kasey Kahne who celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday.

Saldana led all 30 laps in the World of Outlaws return to high-speed, high-banked half-mile oval in Kilgore to pick up the $10,000 top prize. It was his fourth A-Feature victory of the season, which is the most of any driver and it was also the 43rd of his World of Outlaws career, which puts him just three wins out of the Top-10 on the all-time series win list.

“This is awesome,” said Saldana in Victory Lane. “That was a great effort by our team. We were strong in qualifying, the heat race, the dash and the feature. Last year we won five races and we struggled. We had a good car and just didn’t finish races. This year at least we are finishing races. All of the hard work is paying off this year.”

Saldana used strong starts on eight occasions aboard the Budweiser Maxim on Friday night, as caution flags plagued the 30-lap contest. The yellow flew three times before a single lap was in the books, leading to a complete restart each time. On all of those starts, Saldana who lined up on the outside of the front row found himself in the lead by the time the field entered turns one and two. He battled Jac Haudenschild on the initial two starts and then Wayne Johnson on the third one, after Haudenschild was penalized one row for a crew member working on the car during the fuel stop that followed the third caution prior to the first lap being completed.

“You never really know who is behind you and I knew that Haud (Jac Haudenschild) would be tough on the top,” noted Saldana. “You just have to stay focused and hit your marks and try not to screw up. It was a good night for me.”

The race on Friday night was the first for the World of Outlaws at Lone Star Speedway since 2004 and a huge crowd welcomed the series back to the blazing fast track, which is owned and operated by the family of World of Outlaws driver Sam Hafertepe Jr. Saldana now has three career wins in the state of Texas.

“I’m so happy to be racing in Texas, especially Kilgore,” Saldana said. “This is a beautiful facility. I’m glad all the fans came out and supported this. We need to be back in this state racing. The Outlaws belong in Texas. Hopefully the fans will want to come back next year.”

Donny Schatz, the three-time and defending World of Outlaws champion, had a couple of spirited battles throughout the 30-lap contest as he raced 20-time series champion Steve Kinser for a number of laps, as well as Jason Meyers. The trio was battling for the fifth spot for a large portion of the race until, Haudenschild and Johnson were involved in an accident on the 12th lap, while running second and third, which moved them all up a couple of spots on the restart. Schatz got around Kinser on the 23rd lap aboard the Armor All J&J to move into third and wound up second, after Jason Sides suffered a flat tire on the last lap while running second.

“It was a good night,” said Schatz. “We knew we would draw that 10 (in the dash) sooner or later and tonight was the night. We hadn’t been here in five years and it was a fun place to race. It was darn fast. We did our best to get up in there.”

Kinser continued his consistent start to the 2009 season, picking up his ninth Top-10 finish in the first 10 races aboard the Quaker State Maxim. He battled Sides early in the race and also traded spots with Schatz and Meyers a couple of times. He began the night by winning the second heat race to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash.

“We were a little off in the feature,” stated Kinser. “We’ll go back at it tomorrow night. We were pretty consistent, but we still need to be a little bit quicker. We made some changes tonight and it didn’t really seem to fit what I wanted to do. We’ll just plugging away, that’s all we can do.”

Jason Meyers was fourth on Friday night in the GLR Investments KPC to earn his eighth Top-10 finish of the season.

Danny Lasoski was fifth aboard the Casey’s General Stores Maxim, with Jason Sides holding on to finish sixth in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim after the last lap flat tire. Craig Dollansky recovered from an early flat tire to finish seventh aboard the Direct TV Maxim to earn the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award, after starting 19th. Johnny Herrera was eighth, with Jason Johnson ninth and Kraig Kinser rounded out the Top-10 in the Bass Pro Shops Maxim.

The World of Outlaws wrap up their weekend in Texas on Saturday nights at Houston Raceway Park with the Texas Shootout.

Steve Whiteajer, Jr, survives “full moon” racing at I-37 to take Modified win

April 12, 2009

Outlaw Modified driver Steve Whiteaker, Jr., survived a wild night of “full moon” racing at Pleasanton’s I-37 Raceway Friday night and the young Corpus Christi hot-shoe came home the winner.

The quarter-mile dirt oval produced a series of roll-overs on a dry slick track, there were unfortunately a series of several roll-overs, airborne crashes and fires. Fortunately all drivers were able to walk away without serious injury, but there will a lot of work going on this week for many.

In the Modified class, an anonymous donor threw some extra money in the pot, making a $1,000 payday for the winner. The added money caught the attention of several drivers from the Corpus Christi, Austin and Killeen areas. The IMCA SportMod purse was also increased with the winner scoring $350.

Whiteaker wears ‘em out in Modified main

Corpus young gun, Steve Whiteaker,Jr., has always been a contender at the south Texas tracks and with his recent USMTS experience has taken his game to another level with good finishes in the touring series. Despite a crash in his heat, Whiteaker worked his way to the lead early the A-main, then pulled away to big margin to pick up the big paycheck along with an added hard charger bonus put up by 3-D Landscaping’s, Ray Doyon.

Johnny Torres led the field into turn one as the green waved on the 20-lap main event. In the pack David Smith,Jr., got turned around, but kept going falling nearly a lap down. Whiteaker got past defending IMCA Modified track champion Greg Dinsmore for second on the first circuit. Whiteaker wasted little time running down Torres on the second lap while Dinsmore was being challenged by veteran Lawrence Mikulencak.

Whiteaker got around Torres for the lead on lap three, with Mikulencak taking third from Dinsmore. Dinsmore, who found the wall twice in heat race action and thrashed during intermission on the car, faded and pulled off. Mikulencak caught Torres and took over second on lap six. At halfway it was Whiteaker, Mikulencak, Torres, Elias Anderson and Mike McCarthy in the top five.

Anderson worked his way around Torres on lap 11 for third. Coming from the back, Smith was flying around the top picking off fifth from McCarthy on lap 15. Continuing to work the high side, Smith, who was as fast or faster than the leader at the end, grabbed fourth from Torres on lap 18. Up front Whiteaker was holding a big lead over Mikulencak and easily took the checkers in the WW Bodies, Showtime Signs, Jana Schurry/ReMax Realty, Youngs Auto Repair, Hughes Chassis.

“I kind of got lucky,” said Whiteaker. “Someone got sideways on the first lap and Lawrence (Mikulencak) had to check up and I was able to get by him. Once I got the lead I didn’t really know how far anyone was behind me or how big a lead I had. You just hope someone isn’t behind you waiting for the last lap to make a move.

“I was fast tonight. The track was really decent. It didn’t start off that great, but it was really good, real racy, slick and nice and slow. It turned out to be a good night after all. After the incident with Lawrence in the heat I didn’t think we were done for the night, but knew we had a lot of work to do. We able to get it back together, that’s what it’s all about.

“Running with the USMTS series definitely helps my driving. You’re only as fast as who you race with. That’s how you learn to get faster. I’ll go out of town and be faster when I come back, then everyone will catch up to me.”

Butcher slices up the IMCA Sportmod field

As stable mate of Whiteaker, Dustin Butcher has learned the ropes quickly and made it a “Team Whiteaker” sweep in the two modified classes. Butcher escaped an early brush with tire wall, worked his way up through traffic and got the point just before halfway. A late race caution bunched the field, but Butcher held off the wounded car of Chris Swenson for the victory.

At the start of the 20-lap IMCA SSM main, Larry Jernigan and Wesley Malcher stayed wheel to wheel through turns 1-2. Malcher eased out front going into turn 3 to get the lead. In the pack Chris McLendon got sideways and collected Robert Williams. As Williams car dug in it broke the rear end up sending him airborne with a hard landing on three wheels. The next start saw Jernigan jump into the lead, but Butcher found the tire wall in turn 1.

The third start was a charm with Jernigan again leading into turn 1, but Doug Livingston came from row two sneaking under Jernigan for lead coming out of turn 2. Malcher and Mark McGahey followed for second and third. On lap 1 Swenson got around Jernigan for fourth and made contact with McGahey knocking the toe-in by several inches. Swenson went around on lap 2, but kept going, with Dennis Hilla spinning behind him to bring out a caution.

On the restart, Malcher got inside Livingston in turns 1-2, while Butcher made his way into the top five. As Livingston and Malcher battled through turns 3-4, Malcher pushed up in 4 making contact with Livingston. Livingston wheel hopped Malcher sending him airborne and head-on into the wall hard. Ironically, teammate McGahey, inherited the lead for the restart that saw Aaron Lunsford get by Jernigan for fourth.

Butcher had just made a move on Swenson for second when McGahey spun from the lead collecting Jernigan. With Swenson’s wounded ride now on point, Butcher took advantage on the restart and got along side for lead. Butcher grabbed the top spot on lap 6, with Joe Spillman and Hilla side by side for fourth. Hilla and Spillman swapped the spot coming to halfway with Butcher, Swenson, Lunsford, Spillman and Hilla the top five at the crossed flags.

Eric Madden spun on lap 11 to bring out the yellow. Once back to green, Butcher got a good jump on Swenson getting clear of the field. Lunsford then moved on Swenson pressuring him for second. As the Spillman-Hilla battle continued, both went around in turn 2, with Hilla stalling to bring out a caution on lap 13.

Butcher again got a good jump on Swenson, who was doing all he could to hold off Lunsford. Spillman was able to work his way back up getting by Malcher for fifth. In the waning laps, Spillman caught Jernigan for fourth and got the spot. Up front it was Butcher in the Access Ford, WW Bodies, Majek powered, Rush Chassis cruising unchallenged to the win.

“I was able to stay near the infield where the moisture was at,” Butcher said. “After watching Danny Brown hit the same tires, in the same spot as soon as I hit them I thought ‘Oh no I’m going to go over too’. I was able to stay on all fours and the car was all right, so I kept on going.

“When I finally got to Chris (Swenson) under caution I saw his front end was toed-in about three inches. I knew he was going to have a problem steering, but he’s still pretty hard to pass. I still have to work on him and drive my race. My car was good so I wasn’t real worried.”

“The dry track was a little tough (on cars). I just think it was everyone getting used to being on the track again at the beginning of the year. There are a lot of people working the bugs out. I’m sure they’ll get better.”

In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, Jerry Neal got out front to lead lap 1, with Richard Bartosh, defending champ, Moe VanKirk, multi-time champ, Gary Hunter and Howie Marcx falling in line. Patrick Kelly worked his way around Marcx for fifth on lap 1. Bartosh, in a new car this year, got past Neal to grab the lead on lap 3, with VanKirk taking second on lap 4.

Kelly, using the high groove, began to pressure Hunter for third on lap 7 and with persistence finally got the spot on lap 12. Andy Van Blarcum brought the yellow on lap 12 when he had a tire/wheel break off. On the restart, Kelly finally secured the pass on Hunter, while VanKirk was looking under Bartosh for the lead. The two stayed side by side on lap 13, while Marcx got past Hunter for fourth. Kelly, still running the rim, snagged third from Neal on lap 16.

After losing a little ground to Bartosh, VanKirk closed back in on the leader getting along again on lap 17. The two continued to run door to door, while Marcx snared fourth from Neal. VanKirk threw everything, but the front bumper, at Bartosh as the two scrapped it out for the win. At the checkers it was Bartosh fending off VanKirk to take the hard earned win.

The scheduled 20-lap Street Stock feature saw Chris Brock lead into turn 1 but get passed by Frank Garrish, while Cody Clark and 2008 Pure Stock champ, Justin Henley spun but continued without caution. AJ Wernette get turned around on lap 1 and got clipped by Brock who brought out the caution. On the restart Rene Mares got sideways in turn 1 with Wernette, who had nowhere to go, sending him the rest of the way around.

Once back to green the two 2008 championship contenders, Donald Lewis and Wade Jones, ran side by side for third. Wernette got under Garrish for the lead on lap 3 followed by Jones to second, with Tommy Casey getting by Lewis then Garrish for third. Garrish had just worked back around Casey, when Jones spun from second on lap 4. On the restart Garrish spun and collected Lewis.

As Wernette inched away on green, Eric Knudtson and Casey ran side by side for second. The two stayed door to door on lap 6 with Knudtson getting the spot on lap 7. Casey would spin from third, but keep going without caution. Knudtson caught Wernette for the lead on lap 10 and got the top spot on lap 11. In the pack, Mares and Henley had their own personal fight for fourth swapping the spot in the final laps. Wernette tried to hang with Knudtson, but got hung behind a lapped car giving Knudtson an easy run to the checkers.

William Saunders lead the field of a dozen Pure Stocks into turn 1 for the early lead, with Philip Haywood, Mike Brown, Janel Hilla and William Cavender in tow. Brandon Eury got by Cavender for fifth, with Jason Kelly tracking him for sixth. Brown began to challenge Haywood for second while Eury looked low on Hilla for fourth. As Hilla, Eury and Kelly scrambled for fourth, Eury and Kelly hooked bumpers briefly but broke themselves free.

Brown gave away his top three spot on lap 6 when he spun in front of the pack sending everyone into evasive mode. On the restart, Sean Terry spun in turn to bring the yellow back out. Leader, Saunders, was forced to pit with a flat tire. This handed the lead over to Haywood on the restart. Once back to green Brian Holland got into the turn 1 tires and rolled to bring out the red.

Once back under green again, Kelly got by Eury for second and was quickly on Haywood for the lead. Kelly took the point on lap 8, with Eury and Haywood side by side for second and Hilla beside Brown for fourth. Hilla got the spot on lap 11 but did a half spin giving the spot back to Brown. Brown was then able to get past Haywood for third on lap 12. Out front it was Kelly stretching his advantage out to a full straightaway, motoring on to the easy win.

Green flag flies on 2009 ASA Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil National Championship

April 10, 2009

All across the United States the American Speed Association Member Tracks have either started - as Thunderhill Raceway did three weekends ago - or gearing up for their 2009 racing season. It is also a clean slate as the drivers at each of these tracks will start competing for an opportunity of a lifetime.

Those drivers will be competing to become the second American Speed Association Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Member Track National Champion. One driver, either from an asphalt quarter-mile track to a dirt half-mile track will emerge as the best in the nation.

Last year, Cary Stapp of Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX won the championship and got an opportunity to show his talents to Joe Gibbs Racing in a special tryout. That opportunity is again available for the 2009 champion.

ASA National Champ Cary Stapp chats with Joe Gibbs and his wife Kelli

ASA National Champ Cary Stapp chats with Joe Gibbs and his wife Kelli

“Last year was just incredible, we had a championship battle that literally came down to the last lap of racing,” Dennis Huth, American Speed Association President stated. “We had Cary Stapp in Texas holding off Linny White from California for the championship. It was awesome to have two drivers from different parts of the United States battling for it.”

As the 2008 ASA Member Track National Champion, Stapp took full advantage of his tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing. The experience itself was one that Stapp will always remember, “Oh man, it was more than what I expected,” Stapp stated. “Joe & JD Gibbs and their entire staff treated us so well; this is something I will never forget.”

The San Marcos, TX driver got to tour the Joe Gibbs Racing shop and had a test session at South Boston Speedway where he logged over 100 laps in testing two Toyota Camry’s for Gibbs.

Speednetdirect.com will again keep track of the unique point standings through out the season until the September 27, 2009, deadline. The point calculations are “weighted” and will consist of: number of cars competing in a feature event, invert of the main event, average finishing position, number of races competed in, and wins. These will create an average that resembles a batting average in baseball.

The key to getting an accurate point average is that a competitor will need at least 14 races that are competed at an ASA Member Track. Some tracks may run double feature events in one night to reach the minimum of 14 events. All sanctioned races will count towards the championship.

The biggest item to remember is that to have an opportunity at the National Championship, the driver must also be a Feature Division 2009 track champion at the Level 1 ASA Member Track.

“We have a few new tracks joining us this year and I expect the competition that we will see for the National Championship will be as close to the competition that fans and other competitors will see each week at an ASA Member Track,” Huth stated. “The ASA Member Tracks will have some exciting races this summer and the fans will be on the edge of their seats every week, guaranteed. And in the end, we will take their best driver and put them up against the best from the other tracks and have our National Champion.”

“Last year was an awesome opportunity that the American Speed Association gave us by bringing their National Champion to our shop and trying out with Joe Gibbs Racing,” JD Gibbs stated. “The American Speed Association Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil National Championship has a unique formula to find the best driver from their member tracks across the United States. I had a privilege to meet and get to know Cary Stapp and he is a great representative of the drivers who race every week at the various ASA Member Tracks. We at Joe Gibbs Racing cannot wait to meet and test this year’s champion.”

Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, sponsor of the American Speed Association National Short Track Championship, is the same oil developed and used by Joe Gibbs Racing. The team sells the oil so racers across the country can have access to the latest technology in racing lubricants.

Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the premier organizations in NASCAR, currently fielding three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams and a driver development program. Based in Huntersville, N.C., and owned by Joe Gibbs - a three-time Super Bowl winner as head coach of the Washington Redskins and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame - JGR has competed in NASCAR since 1992, winning three Cup Series championships and more than 80 NASCAR races, including three Brickyard 400s and the 1993 Daytona 500.

The American Speed Association Short Track National Championship is another step by the industry leader in creating new and innovative programs. This follows the recent announcement about extending the insurance coverage for ASA members traveling to, from, and during an ASA-sanctioned event. For updated ASA National Points, just click on the “Points” link at www.asa-racing.com.

ASA members in good standing are eligible for a $500,000 Excess Medical Benefit as well as a $20,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit. Coverage for the member begins while traveling to a location promoting an ASA-sanctioned event and continues until arrival home again. The American Speed Association, in conjunction with WSIB Motorports Insurance, is the only sanctioning body to offer insurance coverage which extends beyond the boundary of the racetrack itself (complete details are available online at www.ASA-Racing.com).

The ASA Member Track program is comprised of more than 35 short tracks around the United States, as well as a variety of regional and national touring series. For more information, call (386) 258-2221 or send an e-mail to info@asa-racing.com. For news and information from all the racetracks and tours involved in the ASA, visit www.ASA-Racing.com.
