Temple’s Paul White continues his win streak with “double” at Texana Raceway Park

March 30, 2009

Temple’s Paul White bagged another double Saturday night at Texana Raceway Park in Edna, Texas. White won both the Limited Modified and the Outlaw Modified features before a good opening-night crowd after scoring four victories the previous weekend – two at Battleground Speedway on Friday and two at Houston Raceway Park on Saturday.

The evening’s racing program was designated the “Aaron Hudgeons Benefit” with many drivers and fans making donations to help defray the medical expenses that popular stock car driver Hudgeons is facing as he battles cancer. Hudgeons is a favorite with both fans and competitors alike at the 3/8-mile track where he has a well-earned reputation as someone always willing to pitch in should anyone need a helping hand. By the end of the night more than $5,000 had been collected.

The first of White’s twin wins came in the 20-lap Limited Modified feature where he led a very competitive 24-car field from wire to wire.

By the halfway point, White had a big lead over JJ Jennings and Jeff Mueller, who were waging their own personal war for second some distance behind. With five laps to go, Mueller took advantage of slower cars to power past Jennings to take second place for good, but was unable to make up any ground on White as the laps wound down.

White did not have it so easy in the 20-lap Outlaw Modified feature even though he once again started on the pole.
During the first half of the race Houston ace Howard Willis hounded White and almost made it by using the outside line while White ran towards the bottom with both grooves seeming to work equally well. Eventually the lower groove came in better – or perhaps the outside groove went away – and White was able to put a car length on Willis after they had run side-by side for several laps.

At the start of the race, Kerrville’s Greg Dinsmore looked like he was going to be a major factor, but after only one lap pulled into the infield with no power.

By mid-race Corpus Christi driver Steve Whiteaker, Jr, had worked his way through the field and was on White’s rear bumper following the same low line as the leader while Willis continued to work the high side.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Mikulencak and Nick Hardcastle had moved through the field and entertained the crowd with a spirited battle not all that far back from the leaders. At one point Mikulencak took a short, unplanned trip through the infield, losing a couple of positions in the process.

As Willis faded a bit, Whiteaker took over the task of trying to find a way around the steady, smooth White.

After a lap-16 caution, Whiteaker was able to get beside White briefly, but wasn’t able to make it happen and White took his second checkered flag of the evening a couple of car lengths in front of Whiteaker. Willis finished third with Danny Brown and Nick Hardcastle rounding out the top five.

Jason Johnson takes ASCS Gulf South win on last lap at Gator Motorplex

March 29, 2009

Jason Johnson overcame a variety of problems to win Saturday night’s 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region main event at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas.

After encountering rear end issues in his heat race and then spinning early in the feature after transferring from the “B” Main, “The Ragin’ Cajun” rallied through the field to take the lead away from Travis Rilat on the final round in Marvin and Peggy Pearson’s Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports No. 11 Eagle.

While Johnson ultimately added his second overall ASCS feature win of the season, it was 18-year-old Aaron Reutzel that paced the initial 21 circuits from the front row. It wasn’t until after a brief stoppage for Matt Clevenger, who got upside down, that Reutzel surrendered the point to Rilat.

Rilat, who had raced forward from 14th, held the lead until the final circuit when Johnson raced by on the high side to steal the win. Rilat settled for runner-up honors, with Reutzel taking the show position.

Ray Allen Kulhanek raced from 13th to fourth, with Channin Tankersley rounding out the top five. Trey Robb was sixth, with 20th-starter Eric Baldaccini, James McNeil, Chris Sweeney and Kent Lewis, Jr., completing the top ten.

Jimmy Brooks, Reutzel, Brandon Corn, Lewis and Tankersley topped heat race action for the 37-car field with Sweeney and Johnson winning the “B” Mains.

Saturday’s action atop the high-banked, red clay ¼-mile Gator Motorplex oval marks the third of 28 nights of scheduled competition for the ASCS Gulf South Region in 2009.

The series kicked off the season on the opening weekend of March with four-time Lucas Oil ASCS National champion Gary Wright dropping in to sweep the weekend. And with several invaders on hand during that opening weekend, Scottie McDonald of New Caney, TX, escaped the weekend as the top-ranked ASCS Gulf South championship contender.

McDonald, who won the series’ first feature event at Gator Motorplex in 2005, is just four markers ahead of Clute, TX, teen Aaron Reutzel and Willis racer Kent Lewis, Jr., with Highlands, TX, hotshoe Channin Tankersley and Montgomery, TX, shoe Tommy Bryant just eight points off McDonald’s pace.

Chris Sweeney topped last year’s first series stop at the Gator Motorplex, with Bryant capturing his first series win aboard David Miller’s B&M Jr. No 21T last July.

Two-time and defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, is just a dozen markers behind McDonald, while Texas City, TX, shoe Greg Rilat makes his 107th consecutive series start 73 points off the pace after a rough opening weekend.

Saturday night’s action at the Gator Motorplex is slated to go green at 7:00 p.m.

The high-banked, ¼-mile Gator Motorplex red clay oval is located in Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill exit), then east, then 1.4 miles south on SR 75. For more information, contact the track at 936-588-6127.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 28 nights of racing action at eleven different tracks throughout Texas in 2009.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.

Past ASCS Gulf South Region Feature Winners at Gator Motorplex:

Houston Motorsports Park Joins NASCAR Whelen All-American Series

March 24, 2009

NASCAR announced today that Houston Motorsports Park will be a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track in 2009.

Houston Motorsports Park, a D-shaped .375-mile banked asphalt and concrete oval, opens with the five-division, NASCAR-sanctioned “Fiesta’s Speedfest 09 presented by Cricket Wireless” Saturday, March 28. The track is located inside Beltway 8, not far from downtown Houston.

“Our mission is to provide the highest quality affordable fun for the fans, the highest quality racing environment for the racing teams, and an outstanding value for the investment of sponsors,” said John Mandabach, vice president for marketing. “NASCAR is the next step in our evolution. It brings more excitement and prestige for our track and greater recognition for our participants.”

“We are very pleased to welcome Houston Motorsports Park into the NASCAR family,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “It is a tremendous facility in one of the biggest markets in the United States. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is the foundation of the sport and is exemplified by tracks like Houston. The state of Texas has a long history of great racing and a large NASCAR following. We look forward to crowning the first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Texas state champion.”

Houston Motorsports Park is owned by Graham Baker and opened as a dirt track in 1977. It was paved in 2000. Unique to the track are two lanes of concrete racing surface in the turns, much like Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

“The concrete lends itself to letting the drivers have two grooves for side-by-side racing,” Mandabach said.

Weekly divisions at the track include NASCAR Fiesta Late Models, NASCAR Cricket Modifieds, Pro Trucks, Pro Stocks, Limited Modifieds, Eco-Stocks, Legends and Bandoleros. The track operates on an every-other Saturday night basis. The track website is www.houstonmotorsportspark.com. The facility also includes an award winning .125-mile NHRA-sanctioned drag strip.

Since its inception, the NASCAR Home Tracks have served as a springboard in the careers of many NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers. Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte, Jamie McMurray, Elliott Sadler, Martin Truex Jr. and Brian Vickers all began their NASCAR careers racing in one of the NASCAR Home Tracks’ series. More information on NASCAR Home Tracks is available at www.nascarhometracks.com.

Shannon Babb claims $20,100 Lone Star 100 World of Outlaws Late Model victory at Battleground Speedway

March 23, 2009

Shannon Babb rode the wild-and-wooly cushion to a $20,100 victory in Saturday night’s inaugural World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Lone Star 100’ at Battleground Speedway.

Then he rode Hondo – a 1,300-pound Texas Longhorn – in Victory Lane.

Babb, 35, of Moweaqua, Ill., celebrated his hard-fought triumph in style, donning a cowboy hat and climbing on the back of the brown-and-white steer that was brought in from a local ranch to lend a Texas-accent to the post-race ceremonies. He responded to the cheers of the three-eighths-mile track’s near-capacity crowd with a wave of his hat.

“I had my doubts (about sitting on Hondo) after I gave him a kiss and he grunted back at me,” said Babb, who registered his ninth career win on the WoO LMS. “But I’m sure if his owners had any question about it they wouldn’t have let me try to get up on him, so I climbed right on him. I’ll do anything for $20,000.”

Babb drove his heart out before meeting up with Hondo, taming the outside groove to score his first victory since starting his own team this season with the help of Sheltra Motorsports, Petroff Towing and Donley Trucking. He inherited the lead when defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., slowed with a flat right-rear tire on lap 40 and held off repeated challenges from Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, en route to the checkered flag.

In an eventful race that featured six lead changes among four drivers and stretched over an hour in length thanks to nine caution flags, Babb steered his Dargie-powered Rocket car across the finish line 1.285 seconds ahead of Lanigan, who rallied from the rear of the field after pitting for a new tire on his Fusion Energy Rocket.

Birkhofer nosed in front of Babb to lead laps 56 and 71, but he couldn’t complete a pass and settled for third place in his Birkhofer-Mars Chassis.

Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., finished fourth in his Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket after climbing as high as second from the 15th starting spot. With Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., who entered the Lone Star 100 as the WoO LMS points leader, finishing 23rd after he spun off turn two on lap 17 and was clipped by several cars, Richards moved to the top of the standings after four events.

Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., who started 10th, placed fifth in his Corry Rubber Rocket. It was his first top-five run of the 2009 WoO LMS.

Babb, who started third, flashed his vintage cushion-pounding form in rolling to his first WoO LMS triumph since July 18, 2008, at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, S.D.

“It was kinda ugly, but we got up there and got it done,” said Babb. “The cushion came in for us and we took advantage of it.”

Babb found that the extreme outside of the high-banked track was prime real estate for him following a lap-36 incident involving polesitter Rick Eckert of York, Pa., and Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y. The two WoO LMS regulars tangled exiting turn two while battling for third place, sending Eckert against the backstretch wall and Coffey into the guardrail between turns three and four.

“At the beginning it wasn’t any good on top, so I was planning on running the bottom,” said Babb. “But it was so slimy on the bottom I couldn’t steer down there. My car would just push up in the middle in front of those guys, so I was struggling. Then, after Rick and Vic got together, I restarted on the outside and found something up there.

“I just tried to make long straightaways out of it and follow the cushion around the rest of the way.”

Birkhofer, 37, became Babb’s toughest challenger. After slipping as far back as eighth from the fourth starting spot, Birkhofer moved back to second on lap 53 and made several attempts to run the inside lane past Babb.

While Birkhofer was able to nip Babb at the start/finish line for the lead twice, Babb maintained his top-side momentum and turned back the threat.

“When you’re up on that cushion, you can’t let the thing straighten out too much on you or you’ll jump the cushion,” said Babb. “Every lap’s a hairy lap when you’re up there, so I just tried to forget about (Birkhofer) down there and keep making my good laps on the top.”

Birkhofer, who lost ground after being overtaken for second by Lanigan on lap 88, recorded his second consecutive third-place finish on the WoO LMS. He finished in the same spot on March 13 at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala.

“I tried everything I could to pass him on the bottom,” said Birkhofer. “But hey, that was Shannon Babb running that cushion. I couldn’t run up there like that.”

Lanigan, meanwhile, felt the first WoO LMS event in Texas since 2004 might have slipped through his fingers. He appeared in prime position after marching forward from the sixth starting spot to grab the lead on lap 36 from race-long pacesetter Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis.

“I feel like we could’ve won that race,” said Lanigan, who never got close enough to challenge Babb over the final 12 circuits. “My car was good enough to move around, so we could’ve gotten up there and run the top like Babb. We just had a bad break (with the cut tire).”

Finishing in positions 6-10 was Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., who rallied after pitting to change a broken left-rear shock on lap 51; Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.; Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., who started 23rd after using a provisional; Ray Moore of Shreveport, La., who earned the $500 WoO LMS ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-finishing driver who has never won a tour race and isn’t ranked among the top 12 in the points standings; and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., who soldiered on with a damaged car after being involved in the scramble that followed Francis’s lap-17 spin.

Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio, and Kevin Sitton of Baytown, Texas, split Saturday night’s pair of B-Mains. King went on to finish 13th and capture the $250 WoO LMS Rookie of the Race bonus.

The WoO LMS continues its ‘Month of Money’ on March 27-28, visiting The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., for the fourth annual Circle K Colossal 100. A $50,000 top prize will be on the line from a total purse of $250,000.
