THR’s Cary Stapp pleased with the results of his NASCAR tryout

It’s Thursday morning and in the Greensboro, NC airport Cary Stapp is starting to feel the gravity return to his feet. For the past three days, Cary along with his wife Kelli realized a dream that many local drivers hope for, a chance to show his talents to a successful NASCAR team.
Stapp, the 2008 American Speed Association Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Member Track National Champion, received his opportunity to tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing, one of his awards for being the National Champion.
“Oh man, it was more than what I expected,” Stapp stated while waiting to board his flight back to his hometown of San Marcos, TX. “Joe & JD Gibbs and their entire staff treated us so well. This is something I will never forget.”
The three-day adventure started on Monday morning as Dennis Huth, American Speed Association President, met the Stapps at the airport and was their personal host. The three went to Gibbs Nationwide Series shop where Stapp got fitted in the two cars that he would be testing in on Wednesday.
After that it was over to Gibbs Sprint Cup Series shop, and as soon as they walked in the door, Cary and Kelli met the new driver of the #20 Home Depot Toyota Joey Logano.
“We were pulling into the parking lot of the shop and I saw this real cool hot rod in the parking lot and I am big hot rod fan,” Stapp commented. “We walked in the door and there was Joey talking to the secretary. We had a good five to ten minute conversation with him. After he left, I heard this loud sound and looked out the window and it was Joey driving off in the hot rod.”
They then it was off to a tour of the shop, “It was about three times bigger than I thought it would be,” Stapp said in a surprised voice. “It was incredible to see what they did from the fabrication to everything else. What amazed me is they do everything there from building the car from the ground up. The place didn’t even smell like a shop, it had a nice scent and you could eat spaghetti off the floor. You wonder how many people they have employed to keep it looking that incredible.”
After the tour, they visited with JD Gibbs for about 45 minutes. While they were visiting, they got a surprise as Joe Gibbs also joined in on the conversation. “We talked about a lot of normal life stuff, our families and such,” Stapp recalled. “JD talked a lot about his drivers. Kelli asked him about Tony Stewart because he is her favorite.”
The second day was spent visiting Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports and Roush Fenway Racing shops, just like any other visitor. Later that day, they traveled up to South Boston Speedway in preparation for the test on Wednesday.
Under sunny skies and cold temps, Stapp was able to run over 100 laps in testing two different Camping World Series cars. One was a former Denny Hamlin car and another was a former Tony Stewart car according to Stapp.
As for the test itself, Stapp showed his stuff on the track, “Marc Davis shook the cars down a day before and he was running lap times in the 16.0 to 16.4’s. I went out and found the groove right away and was running 16.0’s on fresh tires. As the tires went away, I was doing about 16.5 second laps.”
Stapp had the full support of the Joe Gibbs Racing staff and even Larry McReynolds of Fox Sports dropped by and talked to the champion.
At the end of the day, the dream was realized and a weekly competitor got its opportunity. What the future holds for Stapp, only time will tell. But, overall Cary and Kelli Stapp will have stories to share for a lifetime.
“I just wanted to show everyone that I could hold my own with the best,” Stapp said in an interview with Newstreamz shortly after returning to San Marcos on Thursday. “Actually I surprised myself with how well everything turned out since I had never driven one of those (NASCAR-type) cars and had never seen that track before. I hope I impressed the Gibbs team too because I got some lap times that were quicker than the Joe Gibbs Racing team driver drove the same car with fresher tires.”
“Kelli took over 200 pictures,” Stapp stated with a smile in his voice. “Funny thing is that Thunderhill Raceway (his home ASA Member Track in Kyle, TX) has our drivers meeting on Saturday and I have a feeling that most of the time will be me talking about this experience.”
”None of this would have happened if (Thunderhill Raceway owner) Mary Ann Naumann didn’t support local racing the way she does.” Stapp explained. “ Her decision to run with the ASA sanction has made all this possible. And (ASA President) Dennis Huth has done a great job giving us local racers a chance to show what we can do. I don’t know how he landed this tryout deal for the series champion, but I’m glad he did!”

One race at a time for ASA Racers

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The opportunity to become the inaugural ASA Member Track National Champion and the opportunity to have a test session behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota is on the mind of many drivers across the 30 ASA Member Tracks in the United States. But for the two leaders in the East and West Region, each takes their season one race at a time.
On the West Region side, it was Cary Stapp of San Marcos, TX making a huge move this week after his feature win this past weekend at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX.
“I think the National Championship is awesome, I have won local track championships and it gives me an opportunity to win something more,” Stapp stated. “I would to thank ASA and Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil for this opportunity.”
Stapp, who has a performance index of 2.2962 which puts him third in the overall standings, made a huge leap in the West Region as he went from third to first in just one week with his win on Saturday night.
But for Stapp, the wins don’t come easy as he has to battle his way to the front. “Mary Ann Naumann, the track owner, has us line up based on our point average and usually I am coming from the back to the front each week.”
So far this season he has lived up to that task as his worst finish in six starts is a fourth place finish.
“Its fun racing where I have to pass a lot of cars to win, more fun then starting up front every week,” Stapp stated. “It’s just one week at a time and see where we end up.”
KD Kelley of Dover, FL is off to a great start at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa. The young 51-year-old competitor is not only the East Region Leader but is the overall leader with a performance index of 2.8256.
“I just take it one week at a time,” Kelley recently stated. “My goal each week is just make sure I finish in the top five.”
Last weekend, Kelley recorded his sixth top-five finish in 11 starts this season at East Bay. “I was running third and decided to go for the win and got high and let a couple get by me, but it was another top-five finish,” Kelley recalled. So far this season he has two wins and nine top-ten finishes.
Kelley, a former motorcycle racer, started racing stock cars about 15 years ago and won the track championship at East Bay in 2006. That championship meant a lot to him and at his young age, an ASA Member Track National Championship would mean a lot.
“It would mean a lot to me. I had a heart attack about four years ago at East bay and I came back to win the championship,” Kelley recalled. “I made about 19 laps and pulled off with chest pains. I workout about three days a week at the hospital’s rehab center and today I feel like nothing ever happened. I was down for a while, but I am good to go.”
An opportunity for a test session in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota would be a unique opportunity for Kelley, “I am not sure if they would be interested in me, especially at my age,” Kelley jokingly stated.

Cary Stapp, driver of the #99 ASA A-Line Super Stock, is joined in the winner’s circle by his crew and family – along with Trophy Girl, Tiffany Vogel. Stapp claimed his second victory of the 2008 season at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) this past Saturday night and is currently leading the points’ chase in the West Region of the ASA National Short Track Championship.
