Thunderhill salutes soldiers
May 31, 2008
Kyle, TX - Thunderhill Raceway, which has seen their crowds increase steadily the past few weeks, had another packed evening of racing Saturday night. The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Operation Interdependence 75 brought out media from around the state as KMAC-Sports was providing live internet coverage of the race. Live coverage in written format was supplied by Nick Holt of Texas Speedzone. As always, announcer duties were handled by Milton Hope who’s ability to turn a phrase keeps the crowd entertained from start to finish.
THR continued to build on the changes begun last week, by not only keeping the time limits on the races, but adding a “green, white, checkered” end to races that exceed that limit. This tweak removes the anti-climactic ending created when a time limit expires while the race is under the yellow caution flag. Now, when the time expires under yellow, the drivers are allowed one lap under green, one under the white (last lap), and finally the winner’s checkered flag.

Thunderhill Raceway delivers jam-packed racing action
May 27, 2008
KYLE, TX (May 27, 2008) - Plenty of race cars, trucks and karts were on hand to entertain the fans this past weekend at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX). The green flag waved for 124 entries from all over the state of Texas, and time limits were imposed on each race to provide continuous racing action throughout the night.
The Lone Star Legends highlighted the agenda with its Legend, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster classes.
The Bandoleros were the first feature race on the agenda, and lots of youngsters took their scaled-down, sleek racecars out on the track. The race winner was ten-year-old T. J. Michael from Plano (TX).
Sixteen old-style race cars in the Legends class showed the fans lots of spins and action in their 15-lap feature event. Michael Dabney, Jr., from Kaufman (TX) came up through the field from the rear and managed to capture the checkered flag.
The Thunder Roadsters were next in line, and the two race leaders playing plenty of “bumper tag,” throughout the race. J. C. Umscheid from Alvarado (TX) grabbed the win.
Brian Kyempel claimed yet another victory in the NasKarts, while Jim Albert from Lockhart (TX) continued his domination in the Pro Trucks by adding another feature race to his winning streak.
The Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas was next on the agenda, and a melee on the first lap brought out the caution for a complete restart. Keith Roach from Buda (TX) took the lead on Lap 8 and held on for the win.
The time limit was enforced for the 16 Thunder Stocks that started the feature race. Following a huge oil spill caused by a blown engine, Gary Chancellor from Bastrop (TX) was declared the winner when the clock expired.
Umscheid pulled double-duty on Saturday night and started on the outside pole for the ExpressJet 35 Pro Modified race. Although he battled hard for the lead, Umscheid had to head to the pits due to an oil leak and restart at the rear of the field. Justin Long was able to take advantage of Umscheid’s mechanical misfortune by grabbing the lead and a race victory.
The scheduled 40-lap ASA A-Line Super Stock was cut short due to six caution flags. Cary Stapp from San Marcos (TX), who was the 2007 A-Line Super Stock champion, took the lead on Lap 15 and survived the wrecks and spins to claim victory. Four different drivers have captured wins in the four races that have been held so far this year in this exciting class.
Topping off the night was the 25-lap Grand Stock feature race. Floyd Reed from Spicewood (TX) started the race in the 13th position and survived several wrecks to work his way to the front. Reed took the lead on Lap 9 and claimed victory when the time expired on this event.
The next race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway will be held on Saturday, May 31, starting at 7:00 p.m. The racing action will be highlighted by the 4th Annual TSRS (Late Models) Operation Interdependence 75 presented by Chuck Nash - along with the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts. The Texas Pro Sedans and Allison Legacy Racing Series will also be on the racing agenda. The JRA Kids Club will also be hosting its second Bike Race of the year for the young Thunderhill Raceway fans.
Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, asphalt D-shaped oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, just north of San Marcos (TX) near Yarrington Road (Exit #210).

Tighter show delivers non-stop action for race fans
May 24, 2008
Kyle, TX - Five year-old Graham Mueller and friends kicked off a night of racing at Thunderhill Raceway, Saturday. Mueller was celebrating his birthday with his buddies in the new Birthday Suite and given the honor of calling out “Gentlemen, start your engines” for the first race of the evening.
The production was run on a much tighter schedule than in the past. Saturday’s event featured the addition of time limits to each of the heats and features. This seemingly minor change meant a world of difference in terms of getting races started on time and getting fans back home in bed before the wee hours of the morning.
Once or twice the action was halted because of debris or oil on the track, but Thunderhill officials kept things rocking along with music, giveaways, and a very entertaining dance contest.
The smooth running production was great, but fans were there to see racing - and racing they saw. Favorites like Cary Stapp, the Aramendias (Carol and Steve), Steve Osborne, Terry Tschoerner, and Duane Toyne delighted their supporters throughout. Fans of the thrills and spills also saw plenty of action with bumping, spinning, broken bumpers, and even one driver tossing his snapped-off front wheel at another.
Those listening on race radio with their scanners, (tuned to 460.3250) heard everything from officials sorting out the lineups for restarts, discussion over who to fault for accidents, and even a couple of drivers exchanging heated words in the pit area after a controversial “jump” by one on a restart.

Thunderhill Raceway welcomes Lone Star Legends
May 23, 2008
Lone Star Legends, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters join Saturday’s Racing Agenda
KYLE, TX (May 23, 2008) - Thunderhill Raceway, a 3/8-mile, asphalt D-shaped oval track that’s located in Kyle (TX), has scheduled some exciting stock-car racing action this Saturday (May 24) - highlighted by the Lone Star Legends.
The Lone Star Legends are headquartered at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (TX), and they visit racetracks all over the state.
The Legends class feature old-style racecars - including 1934-1937 Chevy, Ford and Dodge coupes and sedans. The Bandoleros are scaled-down, sleek racecars that run on small, 30HP engines. The Thunder Roadsters are unique-looking, fiberglass racecars that run on 132HP Yamaha engines. All three classes are sanctioned by INEX, which is an organization that promotes uniform rules and enforces safety standards.
Young drivers are often at the helm of these machines. The Bandit class of the Bandoleros starts its drivers at the age of eight. The Legends have a bit more horsepower, and youngsters who are 14 and over are allowed to drive these unique cars. The minimum age for the Thunder Roadsters is 16.
Mary Ann Naumann, THR Owner/Promoter, is excited about the appearance of these cars at this weekend’s race. “We’ve really seen this series grow over the past couple of years, and we know it’s giving young racers a great opportunity to start their racing careers,” said Naumann. “We know that our future depends on the development of young racers, and the Lone Star Legends group is helping to create the passion and skills needed for advancement in the racing ranks. We want to make sure they feel right at home here at Thunderhill Raceway this weekend.”
Naumann’s niece, Kristen “KT” Wallace, will be bringing her #12 Bandolero all the way from Jasper (GA) to race on Saturday. This 14-year-old driver is looking forward to racing in Texas - especially since she has some deep racing roots in the Lone Star State.
Kristen’s dad, Jake Wallace, Jr., is a racing legend at two South Texas former tracks - Longhorn Speedway and San Antonio Speedway. After losing his dad, Jake moved his family to Georgia and ran his Late Model at many of the tracks out east. Jake eventually passed on his racing genes to his son and Kristen’s brother, Eric Wallace.
Eric is currently employed by Roush Racing and will be making his debut this year as the Car Specialist and Tire Carrier for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series #16 car driven by Greg Biffle.
One of Kristen’s grandfathers, the late Jake Wallace, Sr., also raced for many years all over the state of Texas. Her other grandfather, Jack Sandefur, is the well-known Director of Technical/Pit Operations for Thunderhill Raceway and the Texas Super Racing Series Late Models.
“Racing has been such a big part of our family life, and I’m ready to give it a try,” commented Kristen. “I really appreciate all of the support that I’ve already received from my family as I go through my first year of racing with the Bandoleros. I hope I do well this year, especially when I race at Thunderhill Raceway this weekend!”
Thunderhill Raceway is located at 24801 IH-35, just outside of San Marcos, TX (Exit #210 - Yarrington Road). The grandstand gates open at 4:00 pm, and the racing action gets started promptly at 7:00 pm.
Saturday night’s racing action will also feature the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts - along with the Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas, the Pro Trucks and the Pro Modifieds.

Duane Toyne claims feature win in the ASA A-Line Super Stocks
May 12, 2008
Three different drivers visit the Winner’s Circle in the Thunderhill Raceway Super Stock Class
KYLE, TX (May 13, 2008) - The ASA A-Line Super Stocks have been showing the fans some great racing action at Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX). This past weekend’s feature race was no exception.
Seventeen drivers lined up for the Thunderhill Raceway (THR) 40-lap feature event on Saturday, May 10 - including two of the previous race winners - Shawn Paul Lehman from Manchaca (TX) on April 12 and Mark Mathias from San Antonio (TX) on April 26.
Duane Toyne from Leander (TX) started on the inside of the fifth row in the ninth position. On Lap 9, Toyne and Mickey McKim from Manchaca (TX) made contact, but both drivers were able to maintain their positions.
During several lead changes, Toyne managed to work his way to the front. On Lap 32, Toyne passed Matt Hodge from Kyle (TX) and claimed the lead. He held off the 2007 Super Stock champion Cary Stapp from San Marcos (TX) for the remaining laps.
In other racing action, Carolyn Aramendia from Seguin (TX) claimed the Grand Stock feature win. Aramendia also won the April 26 Grand Stock feature race, and she now tops the points’ race for the Grand Stock class.
Gary Chancellor from Bastrop (TX) claimed his first feature win of the 2008 racing season in the Thunder Stock class, while Brian Kyempel claimed yet another victory in the NasKarts.
Tom Johnson from Kingsland (TX) grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap Texas Pro Sedan race and held on for his first victory of the 2008 season. Shawn Cannon from Forney (TX) started on the pole of the Allison Legacy Race Series 50-lap event and maintained the lead throughout the entire race.
Jim Albert from Lockhart (TX) continued to dominate the Pro Truck class and notched his second victory in the Pro Trucks at THR this season. H.E. Naumann from Del Valle (TX) proudly made his way to the Winner’s Circle following his victory in the ExpressJet Pro Modified 50 Race.
The next race scheduled for Thunderhill Raceway will be held on Saturday, May 24, starting at 7:00 p.m. The racing action will feature the Thunderhill Raceway ASA A-Line Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks, Grand Stocks and NasKarts - along with the Pro Trucks, ExpressJet Pro Modifieds, Dwarf Car Racing Series of Texas and the Lone Star Legends and Bandoleros.

Turn left for fun at Thunderhill Raceway
May 10, 2008
Just north of San Marcos (Yarrington Road exit) is one of the few remaining paved oval tracks in the state, Thunderhill Raceway (THR). Saturday night THR provided fans with hours of tire-melting, fender-bending, left turn action.
As early as 5PM, fans were filling the stands to witness pre-race qualifying and, by 7PM the night began with a moving opening ceremony. For this Mother’s Day weekend race, the competitors were allowed to introduce their mothers in attendance, who were given flowers courtesy of Thunderhill Raceway. The celebration of moms continued throughout the night with more flowers distributed to the crowd and door prizes for accomplishments such as - bringing the most children to the track - having the youngest child in attendance - and more.
The racing began with a series of heat races in which drivers were competing for a chance to advance to the Feature Races. The divisions running heat races were Grand Stocks, Thunder Stocks, and ASA A-Line Super Stocks.
The Feature Races kicked off with the Texas Pro Sedans. Tom Johnson started in the pole position with Sergio Hexsel on the outside. Mike Knotts and Mike Merrell formed row two and Jason Krueger and Lalo Leal made up row three.
Johnson grabbed the early lead with Hexsel falling to the inside in second. By lap 15, Johnson had extended his lead to three car lengths. At the line Tom Johnson won by several car lengths over Hexsel. Rounding out the top five are Mike Merrell, Jesse Sandoval and Lalo Leal.
Next up, the NasKarts took the track. The heavy duty go-carts feature fairings and ground effects making them perfectly designed for high speed drafting. This was one of the most exciting races in a night of excitement. A race-long battle between 16-year-old Megan Smith and Brian Kyempel held the crowd’s attention throughout. Kyempel poured it on in the final lap to win it by half a car length. The narration by Megan’s grandfather made the race that much more fun as his commentary was full of great one-liners, and his voice sounded identical to Tommy Lee Jones.
The Grand Stocks’ 25-lap feature began with John Fitch and Cody Smith on the front line, but in no time at all, Carolyn Aramendia took over second, finding herself running side by side with Smith. For the next dozen laps, Aramendia fought to dispatch Smith but only managed to run parallel.
Finally, on the last lap Aramendia, who smartly cooled her tires a bit for a lap or two, got by on the outside coming off turn 2 taking the win by a car length over Smith. If you like side-by-side racing this was one for you.
After the intermission, it was time for the Allison Legacy Series. Eleven cars faced off for the 50 lap ALS race. Shawn Cannon and Morgan LeBaron line up on the front row - Taylor Brandes and Terry Clark in row two - Charles Akin and Chuck Renna in three - Jay Carley and Kris Kerr in row four - Darius Garcia and Gavin Boyett in five - Tom Harwell at the rear.
With five to go Cannon held several car lengths on Brandes with Tom Harwell, LeBaron and Renna stretching out behind the leader. At the line, it was Cannon by a wide margin with Brandes, Harwell, LeBaron as the top four.
The 30 lap Thunder Stocks feature started 16 cars with Steve Osborne and Gary Chancellor on the front row. Osborne and Chancellor went side by side for a couple of laps with Anthony Gordon shooting for third.
The race featured numerous yellow flags as the field had trouble completing one or two laps without some sort of incident. At the flag Chancellor took the win, Joyce, Tschoerner, Lynch and Brungot rounded out the top five.
Seventeen ASA A-Line Auto Parts Super Stocks lined up for their 40-lap feature with Rick Reeves on the pole beside Doug Ayers.
The highlight of this race had to be the battle between Mickey McKim and Duane Toyne. For the better part of the race, Toyne bumped McKim’s rear and even caused a caution flag by knocking McKims bumper loose and sending it skidding across the track in traffic. Toyne dispatched McKim with a few laps remaining and and set his sights on the leader, Matt Hodge.
On lap 32 Toyne got past Hodge with Cary Stapp right on his tailpipe. Toyne was able to hold off Stapp, and at the finish it was Toyne by a car length. Stapp, Mathias, Hodge, and Larry Stein made up the rest of the top five.
The Pro Trucks featured a field of only five but that didn’t damper their enthusiasm for the 35-lap feature. Jim Albert sat on the pole and Jason Marshall held the outside of row one. Jorge Mendoza and Rusty Mirth started in row two. Nick Riddell began alone at the rear.
Albert took the win over Mirth, Marshall, Mendoza and Riddell.
The final event of the evening was the Pro Modified ExpressJet 50. James Cole and John Paul Klewier started on row one with Greg Baber and J.C. Umscheid in row two. Cole got out first followed by H.E. Naumann who had a great start.
On lap 4, Cole suddenly dropped back and headed to the pits. Naumann took advantage of the opening to grab the lead. Despite a hard bump to Naumann’s rear that spun out the leader, Umscheid was sent to the rear by race officials and at the line, it was Naumann with the win.
It was a great night of racing from start to finish, despite some rather long pauses in the action.

Newstreamz would like to thank Nick Holt and Texas Speedzone for stats and information throughout the night.
